Depends on the Event and who will be there. I pay to go to professional conferences Realtors, Foresters, etc.  but would not likely pay to go to a bar.

Depends on the event - if it presents an opportunity and future business, what's the $50 or so total expense, really?  Drop in the bucket if there's a return of a new business partner or future referrals.

I prefer "networking" in areas I'm interested in, though - I used to do Rotary International, and it was networking, but also a group of like minded individuals doing good stuff for the world ---- I paid to be a part of it, and it was networking, and worth every penny.

If the event is "just throw us $20 and anyone can come" though, I'd question the value.

YES, I've paid up to $200 and you do get what you pay for, The FREE ones are great when you are new and then you out grow them. Some of my biggest deals came from relationships that began at paid events. Many wouldn't and shouldn't, they know themselves well enough to pass on these events. You can't be a wall flower.

On the surface ... probably not. However, I'd like to know the origin of the event ... the people who will most likely be there. How established the group is, etc.  That fact that it is taking place in a bar from 6-9pm suggests it would not be my cup of tea.  If I were looking for a date ... maybe.

I receive all kind of invitations, some of them have a small fee since you get a drink and some food, sometimes paid parking. But most of them are free, sponsored by someone something like this even cost $500 but ONLY TODAY for first 200 attendees it is free! ( of course, it is free for everyone).

I'm a big advocate of business networking groups. They work and I've gotten a lot of business from my networking groups. However, business networking groups generally meet on a weekly or monthly basis. If the event you're referring to is just a one-time event, I probably wouldn't pay to attend.
