It's been in discussion for years and I don't think it is immediately in jeopardy but time will tell. I think it would have a big impact on the housing market if taken away

In jeopardy, yes, but not in the immediate or near term future. Home ownership needs a revival for our economy to work as it should - - killing the deduction would put a huge dent in that revival

Yes, they have been trying to whittle that away for 15 years now. I'm afraid that it might get closer & closer to happening with the deficit rising.
What's the benefit of owning a home then?

Only for tax payers that make less than 1 million per year.

Good question Dorie! If they get rid of it, the incentive to purchase for some will go along with it but so far it has been just talk.

I am wondering what is off the table. I would trade that for affordable health care I think. Sorry, I'm paying bills right now so it's a bad thing to think about...

It would be a major change to eliminate the MID. I don't think is on the agenda. We have NAR as the number one lobbying group in DC. And MID is probably the most popular deduction in the country. It would take a lot to eliminate this.

Taxpayers can only deduct mortgage interest in very specific situations in our great nation. I have not seen anything that there are any plans to change the rules on this issue at this point.

I do not believe it is in any jeopardy. The government likes to induce investment, and this deduction is a very strong inducement

Dorie Dillard It seems to be in jeopardy every year. Let's see what the next tax over haul brings.

I don't think so, for the near future. However, I think everything is on the table with Trump, so you never know. It would hurt the RE Market, as the incentive to own would be less.
