Getting rid of Ivy without scary chemicals

I am in the process of tearing down a huge retaining wall that is 60 feet long and currently about 4 and one half feet tall. The wall was built back in the 1940's and because the previous owner of my home planted some damn laurels to hide from the next door neighbor, who by the way is my favorite neighbor, I have to rip down some plants and get rid of some ivy. This is hard work! I bought some more power tools and have been cutting down laurels, ferns and some other type of plant, but the ivy is giving me fits! The only way I have been able to remove it has been by hand with my hand clippers. No power tool has helped. Maybe I need to go and purchase a hedger.
