These new chicks will be laying eggs in the spring in Haiku Maui.  We're not waiting until spring to get some new chicks, we're getting them started now so we'll have eggs in time for Easter 2018.  It takes about 6 months before they start to lay.  These are White Rocks and Ameraucanas, and there are many more types of egg laying breeds.Starter home for little chickens, Haiku MauiSomebody in Waikapu had ordered day old chicks and had a lot extra, so my husband picked up 8 about a week ago.  He built them a nice outdoor cage with wheels on one end so they can be moved around the lawn as needed.  It's called a "chicken tractor" and they get to enjoy the fresh grass and see the sunshine every day.  This is just their starter home until they're big enough to move to the chicken house down t... 10/07/2017

My gardens in Haiku Maui are always growing and we usually have a series of ongoing garden patches, so there will always be something to harvest.  Ideally we'll start a new section every couple of months, but in the depth of winter we just let it all go to give ourselves a break.  New plants are started from seeds on a regular basis, or whenever I remember to do it.  I'm lucky to have a farmer husband who will prepare the soil and add all the organic amendments, and leaves it to me to get creative with the growing.The potting bench where the seeds get started.The current garden is very full and I'm picking 2 kinds of beans, 2 kinds of sweet peppers, 3 kinds of HOT peppers, assorted salad greens, eggplants, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, bok choy, chard, basil and cilantro.  Still to come ... 08/27/2017

Spring flowers on Maui - Yes we do have seasons in Hawaii, and you notice different trees and flowers that bloom at different times of the year.  You may not have heard of ti (pronounced tea) leaves, but they are common and almost every yard will have them.  The leaves grow all year and have many uses in the home and kitchen.  Wrap food in them for cooking, or serve food on them as makeshift paper plates.   A flowering ti plant in Haiku MauiHawaiians considered them good luck and would plant them in every corner of the yard.  You can't really have too many, and they come in a wide variety of colors and shapes.  The common green ti is everywhere and mostly seen at luaus decorating the tables or stage.  Bright red ones are beautiful, as are the variegated ones.In the spring they all bloss... 03/16/2017
