Take a look at this amazing photo. Guess what it is. Give up? I'll give you a hint. It is A) sustainable and B) solar powered and it is a local source of pride here in the Asheville, NC area. A Sustainable, Solar Powered Fiber Mill
AND... if you find this fascinating as we do, you can learn more about this fiber mill in a lunch and learn sponsored by AIA Asheville. "Energy efficiency and sustainability were central to the architectural design and construction of the 16,500 square foot fiber mill in Weaverville, North Carolina. In 2012 the fiber mill won a Design Award honor from the NC AIA.  The mill incorporates a geothermal system, solar power, natural lighting, LED fixtures, and a comprehensive building energy management system that drastically reduces energy consumption.  In addi...

We used to tell the kids who worked for us at our camping and backpacking store, Venture Out, to never assume that they could tell who a person was just by looking at them.  We encouraged them to draw people into conversations if the customer was open to that.  As a result they'd find out things like the 80 year old woman standing in front of them had completed the Appalachian Trail in her 60s, or the guy who came in to buy climbing rope also worked for the Peace Corps in Africa in the 70s, or the shy woman in front of them was the NC Poet Laureate. It's usually worth it to get out of your comfort zone and strike up a conversation with people.   Some employees were better than others at this but all of them really learned how to engage strangers in conversation. Our employees learned ...

When I reblog something, it tends to stick in my mind and that’s what happened when I reblogged William Johnson’s post "Why Do You Think Readers Read Your Blog Posts and Who Are They? " about what to blog and what people will read and inviting not only AR members to post comments but also to get our non-AR members to interact with us. Be sure to read this well deserved "feature" post. I drove about an hour to Weaverville, NC today for a closing on a really cool Victorian house in Hot Springs. Those of you might have seen some of the photos I posted of the awesome huge creek that flows along the boundary of this property. Driving back towards Balsam got me thinking about William’s post and when I got home it was with great delight that I read an email to us from a friend and client who ...

Thinking of relocating to Asheville? Why not consider the community of Weaverville, just 10 minutes north of Asheville. Having lived in Weaverville for the past four years, I can tell you what I like about it. Weaverville has the charm and feel of a small town with a quaint downtown area featuring such interesting possibilities as the Miya Gallery or Magnum Pottery, a nice selection of restaurants, one amazing bakery and a community library. You can even pamper yourself at Aabani salon or the Secret Garden Spa. Close by you will find convenient shopping, with two grocery stores, a super Walmart, Lowes, CVS, all easily accessible on Weaver Blvd. Rolling pastures and beautiful valleys distinguish the Weaverville landscape and house many lovely subdivisions and neighborhoods of interest. ...

"Land For Sale By Owner- Asheville Just 20 minutes from here "read the sign. . As a land specialist, I am always on the lookout for LAND GEMS, so I skidded to a stop and got out my camera. This could be one of those special finds! The sale of land is a unique activity in the practice of real estate.   Hunting for land on which to build that offers you a sense of place in the mountains takes time and effort. I like the idea of fixing a picnic  full of  locally-grown goodies, and taking off on a mini-adventure which is what I had done when I came to the "Land For Sale By Owner- Asheville Just 20 minutes from here" sign.  But what does one look for when hunting for "the right" acreage? And would this parcel qualify?  Here is a quick list of things to take into SERIOUS account:     •·      ...

Land for Sale Asheville's Secret Conservation Gems- Photo Shoot As chance would have it, we happened on land for sale that our eco-community minded clients will thrill to while out on a photo shoot on this  brilliant April Day. There were the gentle slopes, the trails to easy then steep climbs, the Old Growth Grandfather Tree, the south-facing meadow, the cascading falls, the moss so old you were awestruck, and beside it, an Appalachian chimney ruin and ancient stone wall; places where continuity reigns and tranquility abides.  Here are a few moments we captured along the way. Let me know if, like us, YOU are a person who "feels the spirit" of the Land. . . I happened on this scene unexpectedly. Grabbing my small camera (I keep it in my pocket most times) I held my breath and hoped I could catch this moment....there was the pond deep in the wooded acreage we were scouting for our clients...and there was a photographer, obviously caught in a curious pose, and there was the poet...on the spot...and ready to to tell us later of the rhythms of life to be found near our small corner of the world....   Asheville "Scene " Around Town Photo Series: The Pond, The Poet and the Photographer

We are "horsey" people with clients who love their companions, and the land on which they create amazing equestrian abodes. Trails reach out from the land and wind around the mountainsides to be kissed by little brooks along the way. How could one describe the delight all this provides for those who experience it? Not long ago, I shot aphoto that may express the way this horse feels...one picture....
