Is your chimney ready for winter?   We’ve experienced our second winter storm in two days in Maryland and anticipate a very icy night as the temperature keeps falling. Heating systems are going full blast. However many families are at risk because they failed to have their chimney cleaned this fall. The failure to clean chimneys is a major cause of home heating fires.   Is your chimney really ready for winter?   Chrysanthemum, Brookside Gardens IMG_1856 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Are you ready for the 2014 color of the year?    I love emerald green as the color of the year for 2013 but I may prefer the color for the new year. Radiant Orchid is the Pantone Color Institute color of the year for 2014. This tropical shade is a color-wheel contrast to green. You will be certain to see spring clothes in Radiant Orchid. Are you ready to paint an accent wall or room in your home this color?   What do you think? Do you like the selection?

Is your family at risk from the space heater?   During the winter months, many families are using space heaters to heat or supplement the heat in their homes. According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters account for one-third of home heating fires and four out of five heating fire deaths. “Placing things that can burn too close to heating equipment or placing heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattress, or bedding, was the leading factor contributing to ignition in fatal home heating fires and accounted for more than half (53%) of home heating fire deaths.” - NFPA Take time to discuss the risks with your family and always have emergency plans in place in case of fire. Chrysanthemum, Brookside Gardens, ending a snowy day   We’ve had a snowy day in Kentlands. It was no fun to clear the driveway, sidewalks and steps. After the snow, we have freezing rain and I did not go out to take any snow pictures for our first winter storm of the season. Since I have no snow pictures to share, I hope you will be satisfied with a flower picture. This chrysanthemum was photographed at Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County, Maryland, in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Have a great week. Be careful out there if you will be dealing with snow or ice.   Chrysanthemum, Brookside Gardens IMG_2597 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Autumn colors may turn to white on Sunday in Maryland   The Sunday weather forecast for Montgomery County, Maryland is for snow and ice. Power outages should be expected and those that are planning to attend the Redskins game may face some difficult road conditions. It may be a good day to stay home and enjoy a good book or to watch the games on TV. I prefer autumn colors other than white. When you are out and about, take a closer look at the beauty of nature. Movie Recommendation:  The Book Thief “THE BOOK THIEF reminded me of how lucky we can be with the right mindset and attitude about the life we are given. It also prompted me to wonder, should secrets be kept secret? For me, it was the PERFECT movie to reflect on the meaning of Thanksgiving.”  Patricia Feager Dolores and I took the advice of Patricia Feager and went to see The Book Thief on Sunday.  It is an excellent movie and we also recommend it to you.  ActiveRain may not be best known for movie reviews but this was a great suggestion.   Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_2024 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

The perfect December blog topic Dolores and I have enjoyed a very busy day on this first day of December.  Those activities and photographs will have to be the subjects for future blogs.  When you are sitting at your computer on Sunday evening and are anxious to get back to the good book you are reading, it is a good time to post a photograph of a beautiful flower and wish a happy week for every reader. Enjoy the week and have a most productive December. A dahlia from our Kentlands home garden...   Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_2022 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
