We were enjoying the early morning sights and sounds in our back yard when along came Mom and Dad Sandhill with their two new babies. Sandhill Cranes are fantastic parents and guard their children very carefully. The kids were running all over and modeling their parents searching for food (lizards, toads, insects). Unfortunately, we also have crows in the area: last season a baby was killed and eaten by crows despite the parents attempts to fight them off. 05/17/2010

Trinity- Florida -Timber Greens- We just love our hummingbirds and try to keep the feeders fresh and full. Lately our feeders were emptying out rapidly in less than one day. We would fill in the morning and they would be empty by dinner time. I was envisioning a 4lb hummingbird trying to fly across the golf course. Finally, we found out that a new species of hummingbird had migrated to our area. This one has fur and a fuzzy tail, but no wings. He's got his back feet on the other hook. Then as I watched, he had his whole self on the feeder. Had to shoot through the screen but you get the picture!   05/08/2010

Trinity-Odessa- FL - Pappas Ranch on SR 54 east of Starkey Rd in Trinity-Odessa area, held it's Grand Opening on Feb 11. The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce held their Ribbon Cutting Event on the same evening. The Pappas family invited many of their their friends and customers and Chamber members; the food was fabulous and it was free to everyone on the guest list. They also had free wine and beer. I walked out on our screen porch one day in the fall (before the cold spell) and this Giant Swallowtail was sipping away at the hummingbird feeder. I went back in to get my camera thinking he wouldn't be there by the time I got back out but he was still sipping. I had to take the picture through the screen so I wouldn't scare him away; so it's not the best photography. I wonder what we should call it....a hummingbutterfly or butterhummerfly?     01/15/2010

These charming pink birds are Roseate Spoonbills at the watering hole in LongLeaf today. This is so exciting because we never see Roseates in my part of Florida, usually they stay further south. These must be young 'uns because they still have feathers on their heads. Spoonbills are large wading birds with pink plumage and spatulate beaks. Almost hunted into extinction because of their beautiful pale pink and deep pink feathers that the ladies liked to wear on their hats and fans; what no-one realized at the time was the feather color fades rapidly. In the 1930's in Florida, there were only approximately 40 breeding pairs; now we have over a 1,000.
