I would never hire an agent who was so poor at protecting their commission that they were willing to lower it.

It would be the first clue that they were also going to undersell my property.

I've had clients say lower it or we have to higher X and one of three things happen:

1. I do a comparison test and often they see I bring more to the table. I also explain "why would you hire an agent that folds on their money? Doesn't that tell you a lot about how they will treat your money?"

2. Sometimes I have to take the hit if I want the gig. 3. Sometimes I pass.

John - No, but I did have a buyer client who wanted me to offer another agent money to accept my clients offer. He told me that is the way business is done. I ran away from that client as fast as I could.

I RARELY give a discount - family only.  During the recession when sellers couldn't afford to sell, I would offer to help them out to avoid foreclosure.

The only times i have had to lower it, was when there was no more money, seller was bringing money, had no more to bring, and was get 3/4 commission or nothing. I was overed an old boat in lieu of cash during a short sale once, i didnt take the listing

As a broker that could happen a lot and did happen in my broker days.

As an agent, you'll have some 'splain'n to do to your broker. What half of the horse does he get?

OF course I can lower my compensation, but you don't get the icing and perhaps no ice cream either.

I know it is a difficult concept for many to understand you can allow your clients CHOICE without devaluing yourself. Only a one-dimensional agent would think CHOICE is a bad idea.
