One of the ballot issues in the recent Virginia election was a proposed amendment to the Virginia Constitution to exempt surviving spouses of military service members killed in action from real estate property taxes on their primary residence.  The amendment passed overwhelming with 87% of the voters voting YES to the change. Read more details on the new Virginia Constitutional amendment. Though this doesn't remove the pain of the loss of a loved one, it may provide some small financial relief.

The Virginia Housing and Development Authority (VHDA) was established in 1972. The VHDA is a non-profit organization which helps Virginian's purchase affordable housing.  VHDA offers a variety of home loan programs aimed towards first time home buyers and veterans. In addition the offering VA Loans the VHDA also offers "Granting Freedom" to provide funds for US Disabled Veteran's to make modifications to their homes to accommodate their disabilities.  Partnering with the Department of Housing and Community Development and other community programs the grants provide funds up to $4,000 to add ramps, chairlifts, widen doors to accommodate wheelchairs and other modifications approved by the VA.  If you are looking for a new place to call home with an easy commute to Fort Belvoir you can not get closer than this. Inlet Cove  and Cook Inlet were built about ten years ago and is the closet community to the front gate of Fort Belvoir. The community features a community pool, tot lot and volleyball court.
