The Keep Pearland Beautiful group is hosting the Cigarette Litter Awareness Day on Saturday, February 9th from 12pm-4pm.  The of the most amazing facts I learned while gathering information for this blog, is that the Keep America Beautiful's 2009 research found that the overall littering rate for cigarette butts is 65%, with tobacco products comprising 38% of all US roadway litter.  Can you imagine!  If smokers would only stop throwing cigarette butts out of the window of the car, dropping them into planters or throwing them in our lakes, we would have a huge reduction unsightly and unhealthy litter. The City of Pearland will hold the next Citizen's Police Academy beginning Feburary 7th.  The class will meet on Thursdays from 7pm - 9:30pm for 12 weeks. Graduates of the Citizen's Police Academy will gain an understanding of Police Procedures and Services.  If you are interested in learning more about the Police Department, this class is for you!           Pearland Winterfest will be held this Saturday, January 26th from 10:00am-5:00pm. You really need to check out this fun local event. It is family-oriented and has activities and entertainment for all ages. The main attraction of this event is snow!!! In prior years they have had snow play areas, petting zoos and snow sledding hills as well as carnival games and shows. Country Place Pearland is a 55+ Active, Gated Community.  Country Place has a Carriage House and has daily planned activities, a huge swimming pool, tennis court and a lake for picnics. If you've ever had the desire to learn to square dance, you are in luck!  The Hanger Squares in Friendswood will offer square dance lessons on Saturday nights from 6:30pm-8:30pm.  Stop by on January 12th and 19th where prospective dancers can join in the fun. There is always something fun going on at the Pearland Library.  For the month of January, the Library will host a Brown Bag Bunch Book Club for ages 9-12 on January 14h at 12:00pm.  The book with be "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead.  How about a fun play date for the children?  Stop by the Library on January 19th at 2pm for Lego Play Time. The "Keep Pearland Beautiful" group is always working hard to keep our City looking fantastic!  This year, the group will give away seedlings for an Arbor Day Celebration.   The seedlings will include American Elm, Pond Cypress, Wild Pear, Chickasaw Plum and Blackgum Tupelo.  These trees will be handed out free of charge to Pearland residents on January 12th from 8am - 12pm at two locations. One location will be the Westside Event Center, 2150 Country Place Blvd.    There will be a demo at 10:30am  on planting and pruning.  The second location will be the Pearland Community Center, 3519 Liberty Drive.  There will be a demo on planting and pruning at 9am.
