A brief history of Governor's Island Governor's Island is located just off the shore of Gilford NH. It was first turned from a farming community to a resort when the island was purchased by Stilson Hutchins the founder of the Washnington Post, in 1880. Stilson built a mansion made of Granite on the summit of the island, and the location had a majestic views of the Lake Winnipesaukee and the NH mountains. Hutchins legacy is the creation of the roads on Governor's Island, that are still in use today, and made development of the shore line possible. The whos who of the world were invited to the mansion, and the reputation of Lake Winnipesaukee as the resort playground of the North East was firmly established by dignitaries spreading the word about it.
