Girl Scout Camp Elk River helped kick off what will be a yearlong celebration of the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary.  More than 200 area scouts from 24 troops took a “Step Back in Time” at the winter encampment in Zimmerman that was designed to bring the girls back to the early days of Girl Scouting.     A Little History on the Girl Scouts:  Juliette Gordon Low spent several years searching for something useful to do with her life. Elk River will be hosting its 2nd annual Shiver Elk River on February 25th.  There will be events all over town: Handke Pit with hockey, Lake Orono for the Shiver Plunge and ERX Motor Park for snowmobile races for the kids.   The Shiver Elk River is sponsored by the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce.   Here’s a rundown of events:   •A key feature is the Shiver Plunge. Elk River Minnesota is developing a strategic plan for the Elk River Fire Department, the first step of which is to appoint  an Elk River Fire Service Task Force.  In addition to developing the strategic plan, the other goal is  to lay the foundation for meeting the community’s service needs with respect to fire/rescue capabilities and code enforcement/fire prevention, according to Fire Chief T. Elk River is trying to win the nomination to be the host for Hockey Day Minnesota 2014, and officials for the Elk River Area School District along with other Elk River community leaders believe they have the winning combination in the Handke Pit and the community. After having an Elk River, MN home listed for rent I am finding there is a big need for more single family home rentals in Elk River and the surrounding areas.  It took just over 2 weeks to rent the listing I had in December.  Since then I have received several calls requesting rentals.  On the Multiple Listing Service in the Elk River area there are only a few rentals out there and most of them are higher then the $1300-$1400 payment threshold most people are trying to stay under.  Even going through Craigslist ads I don't see many new options coming on the market. A long time ago in an office far, far away, I worked with a man who was funny and had a lot going for him.  Read this from the pages of the Elk River Star News on reflections of last year.   Alan Sakry, the president of the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce, was one of 45 individuals to jump into Lake Orono this past winter at the first Shiver Elk River celebration. The event raised more than $10,000 for organizations. The second annual event is being planned for Feb. 25, 2012. Now Alan is very seriously ill.  And, we are all hoping for the best.  But, for the life of me, I can't think of too many people who would do this.  And, he was always there for his clients, a good time, his family, his co-workers and the agents and brokers who worked with him because of his caring and attitude.... 01/16/2012

“The Yellow Ribbon program in the state of Minnesota is creating miracles all around Minnesota,” Annette Kuyper, the director of military outreach for the Minnesota Army National Guard, said as the keynote speaker at the January 7th Beyond the Yellow Ribbon community kickoff event, which was hosted by the members of a local steering committee and was open to the general public. “It’s creating a whole new way we can support military families — leading the way in the nation for how America can take care of its veterans.” Some of the groundwork for miracles has been laid and provided cause for celebration at the event. I don't have any pretty pictures (yet), but aim to get a few today.... when I stop by the Pompeii with my bag of food all in effort to try a piece of their awesome pizza that I keep hearing about. I'd love to take a poll someday and see how many folks still go meandering through the countryside on a Sunday afternoon. You know.... like those Sunday drivers? Somehow I get the feeling that it isn't quite as common as it used to be. Life is just too busy and who has the time to waste on a Sunday drive, right? It isn't very often that I make it out for a Sunday drive, but around this time of year I'm likely dubbed one of "those" drivers. I take the longest routes home from anywhere in hopes of a glimce at some beautiful Christmas lights decorating a yard or house. This year is already a pleasant surprise! Winter parking restrictions are now in force in Elk River Minnesota.  Beginning November 15  through April 15, no vehicle may be left parked on a public roadway in the city of Elk River between the hours of 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.  The purpose of this restriction is to allow for the safe and efficient overnight removal of snow and ice as well as other seasonal road maintenance work. Since some snow and ice events are unforecast, these restrictions apply regardless of past, current or future weather conditions. The fine for a winter parking ticket is $30. The police understand that sometimes special situations occur which may necessitate leaving a vehicle on the street overnight.
