This is a dog's story, but it is also a story of how rural communities thrive in Hawai'i. I start my day with an hour or two of work at my desk, since 5 am Hawaii time is already 11 am on the East Coast where some of my short sale negotiators are getting ready for lunch.  But if I haven't looked up by 7 am, my weimaraner drops a pair of running socks in my lap as a gentle reminder that it's time for our run. Real estate sales in North Kohala (around the towns of Hawi and Kapaau) slowed briefly after the first-time buyer tax credit expired at the end of April.  However, looking at the month of August, the lower (under $450,000) end of the market is picking up again! In raw land, it seems everyone wants a parcel of 3-5 acres.  One sale closed for $285,000 (right on busy Kynnersley Rd with a touch of ocean view); two are in escrow with asking prices of $345,000 and $499,000. The 4th of July weekend offers several options for residents and visitors to the Big Island to explore and have fun.  Many of these are annual events like Waikoloa Beach Resort's rubber ducky race to raise money for charity or the rodeo at Parker Ranch in Waimea. This year we are also having a 4-day celebration of "Kohala" which is the way locals refer to the portion of the district of North Kohala on the north-facing shore of the Big Island, from the historic sites west of Hawi through Kapaau out to Pololu Valley.  It is called "Kohala Reunion" as many former residents come back, but it is also a super opportunity for potential future residents to check out the community before looking for that perfect home or parcel of raw land. For the past two years, residents of the Kapaau and Hawi area have been blessed with a fitness facility created in an old service station building.  We enjoyed the circuit, cardio equipment, Zumba classes and yoga.  But with the continued weak economy, even some of the most enthusiastic members found themselves needing to cut their membership to make ends meet. However, all is not lot, as there is a possibility we can move the equipment to the recently renovated gym at Kamehameha Park.  The North Kohala Community Resource Center has received donations of almost half the amount necessary to purchase the hydraulic circuit equipment to be donated. My sweet friend Elizabeth is on the Board of the Kohala Community Hospital Foundation, and she just dropped off our Silent Auction winnings from last Saturday night's annual fundraiser.  If you choose to live in Hawi, Kapaau, Puakea Bay Ranch, or any of the other neighborhoods of North Kohala, you can quickly find yourself immersed in the community.  The spirit of aloha is contagious! Everyone seems to volunteer for multiple causes and participate in numerous non-profit organization, school, church or community events.   Did you know that if you are a part-time resident of Hawai'i, you can take advantage of the Non-Resident Library Card which only differs from a resident's card in that it costs $25,?  If you are here for regular or extended visits, considerr a Visitors Card (good for three months) for $10. Once you have your card it is simple to use the on-line catalog to request books from anywhere in the Hawaii system--or just go to the local library to browse the wonderful collection of Hawaiian cultural resources. On Tuesday the agents in our office were invited to preview a labor of love that has taken shape on 50 oceanfront acres makai of Kapaau in North Kohala:  the Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Ho'omaluhia. Long-time North Kohala residents Jeanne Sunderland (founder of the "Spa Without Walls" at what is now the Fairmont Orchid) and her husband Robert Watkins (MD and director of emergency services at Kohala Hospital) had a vision for a place for retreats and healing that would welcome both visitors to the Island (and from elsewhere on the Big Island) and the local community.   Prior to the earthquake of October 2006, two of the most popular activities for tourists (and locals wanting to show off cultural and natural wonders of Kohala) were Flumin' the Ditch and Hummer Safari.  When water stopped flowing in the awesome Kohala Ditch due to earthquake damage, Flumin' the Ditch was instantly out of business. The Hummer tour business was sold to new owners, however the lease they had for access to remote areas was only through the end of 2008.  My husband and I signed up for one of their last tours, and even though the access to the conservation area is right at the end of the street where we live, we were awed by the diverse habitats and beautiful waterfalls on the Safari.
