When General James Oglethorpe lay out the City of Brunswick in 1771 Brunswick was laid out with the same strong grid pattern as its better-known Sister City, Savannah. The port of Brunswick was a great attraction to settlers with its magnificent deep-water harbor. The first settler was Mark Carr, a captain in General Oglethorpe's Marine Boat Company. Through the many years to follow, the port expanded due to the lumber, oyster, cotton and naval goods business.Views across the channel to Saint Simons Brunswick was named for Braunsweig, Germany - the ancestral home of King George II. The streets and square are still lined with homes with "turn of the century architecture.
