Mother Nature Leaves Her Mark . . . And it's Here for A While I had the opportunity to play golf late Sunday afternoon at a course unfamiliar to both of us, which always makes for a challenge. New experiences, unfamiliar course, a lot of poor shot selections. As we approached an elevated green, we noticed some rather strange markings burnt into the green. It had the look left behind by ground moles when they get into a lawn, or water stains that flash dry. There was one tell tale mark that seemed to tell more of the story. A bolt of lightening had hit the ground and the dissipation of the energy left the pattern burnt into the green. It killed the grass, which will take some time to grow back, but until it does, this will be a reminder to anyone out in an open area when those dark cloud...

Letting the Mechanic know his Help Was Appreciated . . . Pay it Forward   I recently had to take my car to the service center in town because I noticed a puddle of water on the mat on the passenger side of the car. My thoughts were of a leaky window seal or a broken air conditioner, neither of which would be pleasant. The mechanics looked at the seal from the outside then pulled the car onto the lift and sent it up. With a piece of wire in hand, he went under the car, looked around for a few minutes, and started to send the wire up. Within seconds he was rewarded with a water dousing. Evidently something had clogged the discharge hose of the air conditioner, and when he stuck the wire up it freed the hose and he received a little cold water shower. As I have an account with them, I thou...

Music And Fireworks a Perfect Fit! The summer venue of the Hartford CT Symphony Orchestra is the Meadows in Simsbury CT. There with a band shell, professional lighting and sound system. The musicians take a summer break and entertain under the stars to 3-4,000 of their closest friends. Officially, it's the Talcott Mountain Music Festival. Picnics on the lawn or dine at a front row table, but the music is the same to all, just perfect. We attended the Friday night concert on July 1,  which was the salute to America night, understandably. The Governor's Honor Guard, presented the colors as well as the flags of our nation's services. How awesome a concert where the history of National Anthem is first explained, and then as those first chords are struck, all stood to attention and sang alon...

A Comment Heard in Passing becomes a Random Act of Kindness . . Pay it Forward I had caught a comment made by a friend of a friend about needing a chest of drawers for a bedroom. The person making the comment was an elderly woman that lived alone and was having a tough time. As I was assisting a client to empty a home as their family member was confined to a nursing home, I made a pitch for the chest of drawers that was going to charity. I arranged for one of my nephews to help me move the chest. we picked it up, called the woman and told her we were coming over. As we placed it in her bedroom, she was ecstatic. It fit perfectly, was obviously a very high quality piece of furniture and the colors matched. We thought we were done, but not to be. Before we left, we rearranged her furnitur...

Can you ever be Too Young to Learn?  . . . Sunday Photos This weekend we had the Traveler's Championship here in Cromwell. It was a real shoot out as the young pros from all over the world came in for a tune-up maybe in advance of the British Open in 2 weeks. Or just to take advantage of the big first prize and the bigger named golfers are not here. Golf is not an easy game to learn and even more difficult to master. It takes a lot of focus and dedication. A lot of time, and a lot of instructions.   We had our 2 year old grandson, Raphael along for the day, and he was curious about the game. Under the attentive eye of Grandpa Ed, Raphael took his first stab at the game He paid some attention to the instructions, and shows some promise, but nothing worthwhile comes easy. It's all about h...

Here in Prospect CT, the Woodland high School Boys and girls soccer teams held a drive to collect cans and bottles. The proceeds would go toward their costs of travel, etc for their games and practices. Several groups collect recyclables a few times a year, and we always save our cans and bottles just for these drives. With 6 months worth of empties in various oversized plastic bags, I loaded up the car and went to the parking lot of St Anthony's church in the center of town. There the volunteers gladly took all the bags and carried them to the sorting area and then into the truck .     I may have left them $10 to $15 worth of empties, but that was so much more rewarding than taking them to the store myself. I recall too many days as a kid standing in my uniforms outside a store lo...

A Referral From a Blog Gets it Done! . . Central CT Short Sale SuccessA referral from a blog post on short sales brought a distressed client to me looking for help. Her situation was caused by the decrease in home values, loss of revenue because of a cutback in hours, and also a loss of revenue due to the dissolution of a relationship. The bills were mounting and no help was available. The bank was contacted seeking a loan modification, but when they did their appraisal the home was too far underwater for them to consider anything but advising her to do a short sale. After the initial call, we sat down and all of the details and the requirements on her part were explained. All financial documents needed to be collected and organized for submission to her lender.  The lender acknowledged r...

Weekends are getting to be common with the Tag and Garage sales. Here in Prospect CT and Beacon Falls CT, there are additional signs going up. Teamwork is How Work Gets Done More Efficiently . . . Sunday Photos It's no secret that the more people working together the quicker a job gets done. Being part of a team means everyone working towards a common goal, and doing it more efficiently. With any team there are always those that might take a little break from time to time, but the more industrious of the team keep laboring along picking up for the slacker. Here, our grandson Raphael, thought he would help me sweep off the deck. He ultimately got impatient with my talking on the phone and let me know that as a team we work together. PROSPECT CT-REAL ESTATE MARKET REPORT - APRIL 2011 Lower average sale prices, lower sales price/list price ratios, and higher days on market for Prospect CT home sales clearly states that buyers are in the driver’s seat. But there is good news for sellers – less inventory means less competition to get your home sold. However, you still have to correctly price your home and maximize your home’s curb appeal so that buyers will want to make offers and not just drive by.   The single family Prospect CT homes for sale range from a 672 sq. ft. 2 bedroom ranch being offered for $25,000 to a 5305 sq. ft. 4 bedroom colonial being offered for $669,900. Central CT Short Sales Fees Limited for Negotiators   In an effort to limit complaints filed by consumers against short sale negotiators charging excessive fees, the CT Department of Banking and the Department of Consumer Protection issued a joint bulletin this week. There are now limitations on the fees that a negotiator can charge for their work in assisting a distressed homeowner with their short sale. The fees are capped at $500, and they will be paid upon completion of the debt negotiation contract. Consumers are being cautioned to not fall victim to alternative attempts by a negotiator to circumvent this ruling and to report any negotiator that does apply pressure to secure additional funds before doing any work on a client's behalf.   Going through a distressed property situation...

Donating Books so Others Might Learn to Read . . . Paying it Forward   Here in Connecticut, there's a non profit organization called Read to Grow. Their mission is to bring reading at an early age to children. They depend on donations of used children's books, or money donations so that books can be bought. We happen to have a vast collection of children's books, that are for ages 3 and under. A box of them was collected, and my wife brought them to work, as the entire office got involved as well. Reading can be taught at an early age, as it is taught through hearing. Our youngest grandchild, Raphael, loves stories, and has been exposed to them since birth. It has been noticed, and he shows great l;earning potential. Giving our used books to Read to Grow will give other children the sam...

It's a Small Sign, But it's Officially Spring To a first observation, it's a front yard. The daffodils have sprouted, the flox is starting to flower, and the first signs of leaves are starting to emerge. No For Sale, sign, just a photo, but to me it's been long overdue. See, the last time I had this part of the yard online, it looked like this, with almost 18" of snow cover on the ground. So yesterday, I mowed the yard for the first time this year. As it was recently fertilized, and it's warm and rainy now, I will probably need to mow it again in 4-5 days, but I won't care. I'll be in my shorts, taking a casual walk, and all the misery of the snow this past winter will keep a smile on my face, and when I take a break, it will be to get something cool to drink and wipe the sweat off my b...
