Joseph Beverly MacInnis was born in Barrie, Ontario, Canada back in 1937.  The family moved to Toronto after his father died in a plane crash when he was a few months old.  He attended high school at the Upper Canada College.  He continued his education at the University of Toronto where he held the Canadian record for the breaststroke.  He graduated with a MD in 1962.He spent his internship at the Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  In 1963, he met Edwin Link at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.  at that meeting he offered Joseph a position as the full-time doctor for his Man-In-Sea Project.  By 1965, he became the medical director of Link’s new company, Ocean Systems Inc.  In 1967, Link launched Deep Diver the first small submersible designed for l...

Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., was born in Chicago, Illinois back in 1935.  He attended Haines Elementary School, graduating when he was sixteen in the top 10% from Englewood High School in 1952.  He continued his education graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bradley University.  While at Bradley he distinguished himself as Cadet Commander in the Air Force ROTC program receiving a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve Program.  At the age of 21 he was designated as a U.S. Air Force pilot upon completing flight training at Malden Air Force Base, Missouri.  In 1965, he earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Ohio State University. Earnest Orlando Lawrence was born in Canton, South Carolina back in 1901 to Carl and Gunda.  He attended schools at Canton and Pierre, after graduation he enrolled at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.  He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1922.  He then enrolled at the University of Minnesota receiving his Master of Arts degree in physics in 1923.He moved to New Haven, Connecticut where he completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics in 1925.  With Jesse Beams from the University of Virginia he continued his research in the photoelectric field.  He was hired as an associate professor of physics and the University of California in 1928, two years later he became a full professor.  After the outbreak of World War II, he was drawn into military projects.  W...

Wallace Hume Carothers was born in Burlington, Iowa back in 1896 to Ira and Mary.  He attended school in Des Moines, Iowa.  After graduation he attended Capital City Commercial College, completing the accounting and secretarial curriculum in 1915.  That same year he entered the Tarkio College in Missouri.He initially majored in English but switched to chemistry.  He so excelled in chemistry that before he graduated he was made a chemistry instructor and studied as well.  After graduating with a bachelor of science degree he attended the University of Illinois for his master of arts degree graduating in 1921.  He went back to the University of Illinois to study for his Ph.D.  he received that degree in 1924.  After getting his Ph.D. he stayed at the University of Illinois for two years a...

Thomas Oliver Larkin was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts back in 1802 to Thomas and Ann.  When he was 15 he went to Boston to apprentice as a bookbinder.  In 1821, he moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he worked as a clerk.  In 1825, he opened a store in Duplin, North Carolina. He moved again to San Francisco in 1832.  He built the first two-story house in California, it’s still standing at the Monterey State Historic Park.  He also built the first wharf at Monterey harbor.  He acquired several land grants around Rancho Jimeno, Rancho Boga, Rancho Cienega del Rabilan, Rancho Pleyto and Rancho Cotate.  In 1858, he contracted typhoid fever and died within a week.  What you may not know about Thomas is that he was appointed to be the United States first and only consul to Mexican...

Richard Edmund LaMotta was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1942 to Joseph and Mary.  He graduated from the Brooklyn Technical High School.  After graduation, he continued his education at Brooklyn College earning a B.S. in Economics.  He then earned a J.D. from the New York Law School.As a college freshman he developed his own record label. Albert Bond Lambert was born in St. Louis, Missouri back in 1875.  In the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France he finished eighth in the individual event.  Four years later he was part of the American team that took home a silver medal, making him the only golfer to compete in both Olympic golf tournaments.In 1906, he took an interest in aviation, taking ballooning lessons.  In 1909, he met the Wright Brothers, where he purchased his first airplane.  In 1911, he became the first person from St. Louis to hold a pilot’s license.  In 1926, he met an up and coming you pilot who visited his home looking for financial support for a flight he was wanting to do.  He was the founder of the St. Louis International Airport, which was the first municipal airport in the nation.What you may not know...

Vizol Angami Koso was born in Viswema, British India back in 1914 to Notsore and Vichole.  He attended Mission High School in Kohima.  He continued his education at the Government High School in Shillong before graduating from St. Edmund’s College in Shillong.  During World War II he joined the Royal Indian Air Force serving until 1946.After being discharged he was a teacher at the John High School in Viswema.  From 1953-56 he was the Principal of the Naga National High School.  He served as the Vice President of the Naga People’s Convention from 1957-60.  He was one of the founding members of the Kohima Science College in Jotsoma in 1961.  He was elected to Nagaland People’s Council later to become the leader of the Opposition until 1964.  He died in 2008, he was 93.What you may not kn...

Roy Herman Kellerman was born in Macomb County, Michigan back in 1915.  After graduating from high school, he worked for the Dodge division of Chrysler.  In 1937, he was sworn in as a trooper for the Michigan State Police.  Just before Christmas in 1941, he joined the Secret Service in Detroit.In 1942, he was a permanent fixture at the White House.  In 1965, he was promoted to “deputy special in charge”.  He retired from the Secret Service in 1968 as an assistant administrator.  He died in 1984, he was 69.What you may not know about Roy is that he was in the front passenger’s side of the presidential limousine with President Kennedy in Dallas.  I saw the photo, he was chastised for not covering Kennedy’s body with his own.  It took only 6 seconds to Oswald to fire the shots. Bernard John Dowling was born in County Roscommon, Ireland back in 1830. The family moved to the States in the 1840’s where he attended New York University from 1848-1849. He went on to attend the New York Medical College graduating in 1852. In 1856, he was appointed assistant surgeon in the US Army.Her served in the Army during the American Civil War being promoted to Captain in 1861. He was the first person to improvise the first field hospital at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. After the war, he served as senior medical officer one of which was West Point from 1873-1878. Daniel Irvin was born in Wharton County, Texas back in 1931.  The family moved to Houston, Texas where he graduated from the John H. Reagan High School in 1950.  He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Sam Houston State University.He worked as an Associated Press reporter in Huntsville, Texas later as an announcer for the University of Houston football team.He moved to New York City in 1962 for six months before moving back to Dallas and then to New Orleans by 1963.The accomplishments of this man would take a week to write about, only hitting the high points. Amanda Reed was born in Brooke County, Virginia back in 1837. She was educated at Steubenville female seminary and in 1857 she married David.They moved several times between 1862 through 1876, some of those were in Illinois, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and San Diego, California. David was a missionary and ran a mission school in those areas.When David died in 1876 Amanda moved to Portland, Oregon where she made her last move to Fort Wrangell, Alaska. There she oversaw a school acting as clergyman, physician and lawyer for the local people.What you may not know about Amanda Reed McFarland is that she was the first woman missionary to the U.S. State of Alaska, she died in 1898. Elizabeth Bebe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1950. She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
