Abdul Malik was born in South Surma, British India back in 1929 to Molvi and Syeda. He attended the Sylhet Government Pilot High School in 1947. After graduation he was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College passing in 1954 with a MBBS. In 1955, he joined the Pakistan Army Medical Corps. He continued his education at the Royal College of Physicians and at the Hammersmith Hospital, his Post Graduate Medical School, London. He returned to Pakistan in 1966. In 1966, he established the first cardiac unit in Pakistan at the Military Hospital, Rawalpindl. He served as Professor of Cardiology at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from 1970-78.
