Ask them to prove they have the authority to demand such information or just hit delete.

Sounds like a phishing expedition, ignore it.

Never heard of such a thing being done at random like that. When I was in the corporate world we had annual "true ups" with Microsoft and similar vendors.
Personally, if I received a letter like this I'd trash it unless it came from a lawyer and I'd sick my lawyers on them.

No. I have not.
I would turn the tables and ask for equivalent validation from the writer, confirm you can reach out and touch them and how they obtained your contact/address information.
Once positive identification and location confirmed, check the scam reports.
Of course if you are running a bandit copy, or unauthorized access, you have been caught and the real owner could get punished also.

So it sounds like a scam. Most licensed software now, including Microsoft products, are validated using their online databases and re-validates every so many days when connected to the Internet. I still use an older program that checks validity against a security USB dongle physically plugged into my desktop.

No, seems odd. Usually when you go on the internet it would talk back & ping if the licensing was valid or not. Did you pirate some software off another computer? I don't mean that in a bad way but sometimes if one laptop doesn't work & you transfer software to another a message like this gets sent out.

We have never received one, however back a few years ago I remember having our Computer Guy go through every one of our computers to make sure we did not have any pirated software ... we wanted to make sure we had proper licenses for everything on our comuters. All good.
