View Larger Map History The Milwaukee Gas and Light building, a former coal gasification plant, is often mistaken for a railroad depot. When settlers first came to Milwaukee, the Menomonee Valley consisted of wild rice fields and marsh land. Later, as Milwaukee grew, the valley became the location for tanneries, grain elevators, and factories. The marshes were filled and canals and rail lines were built. Industrial machine shops and factories eventually made the valley famous. Falk, Cutler-Hammer, International Harvestor, Chain Belt, and Norberg were all located in The Valley.
