I was thinking about why newspapers are dying off quicker than the dinosaurs and I was trying to think what meteor caused the collapse. It’s strange to think that technology can actually lead to the death of an industry but if you look around we have examples all over of this happening. For instance look at the music industry. In the United States they put a stranglehold on the means of production and distribution. Basically the only way to make it as a musician meant signing your life away and many artists did it. Even today most musicians only receive a tiny portion of the actual sales of their albums and that’s if they are lucky enough to be super famous. Most musicians don’t make a penny. Ok I consider myself to be rather knowledgeable when it comes to computers. It’s not that I started out some computer expert, instead it’s been sort of a love hate relationship where I hate it when something goes wrong and I would scour the internets looking for a solution. I guess the love part is that I do love it when my computer is running smoothly. Even to this day I am just amazed at what modern computers can do. I was doing a little research the other day about the Cray 2 supercomputer. Last night was a first as it goes with firsts on Twitter as Ashton Kutcher becomes the first person to get 1 million followers. Although that doesn’t mean a lot to many people but it was interesting in that he was offering to help out a good cause with the fight against malaria. He also promised to punk Ted Turner if he beat CNN in the race to a million.  But there is more to this story than a meaningless race because Twitter is seriously considering getting rid of the public display of followers. The basic argument for this is quality over quantity and who cares if celebrities can get a million followers. There has been a lot of news today about the virus that was being sent around Twitter. I guess news spreads as quick as viruses on a social network. According to Tech Crunch Twitter has fixed the issue. I saw another post on Slashdot that linked to this story which says the owner of Stalk Daily created the virus out of boredom. Apparently his defense for doing this was that his site is a great site so what does it matter if he forces people to go there against their wills. I normally suggest joining as many social networks as you can but I would think security would be an obvious issue as anyone who thinks so little of security probably would have no qualms about getting paid for the email or password list for their website. I came across this article yesterday and thought it was pretty crazy. Apparently Kodak has changed its TOS (Terms of Service) and now wants to basically strong arm you into paying. Long story short if you have a lot of photos on their site and you don’t pay to have them developed Kodak might delete your entire collection! Not only is this an extremely crappy thing to do on many levels it’s not exactly fair either. First of all when you signed up for your free account probably because you bought one of their cameras you agreed to those TOS probably without knowing it and probably without even being aware of your rights. Security experts and basically anyone who has ever lost a lot of “stuff” will tell you that backing up your data is not only important it’s absolutely crucial. Yet few people do it and when all is lost computer techs are expected to wave some magic wand and bring it all back from the dead. Often you can actually retrieve data from a disc when you think all is lost but not always. There has been a lot of talk lately about alternative fuels and trying to “green” our energy usage. Some of the big talks during the elections and since have been that nuclear fission is somehow safe and green. Yet it’s clearly not either of those things. Nuclear waste is being stockpiled throughout the country with no safe way of storing or disposing of it. On top of that nuclear fission is far from safe but sometimes we forget. Sometimes we need to be reminded of why we don’t do certain things. A while back I wrote a post trying to warn everyone that Captcha as a security measure has been defeated. This basically means that anyone who has a blog or any site that uses Captcha for security pretty much has no security. Spammers could easily hit your site with whatever they want and that’s not good. Well it’s good for them but bad for us. So I had a feeling people were scrambling to find a new method of security. Then I saw this article here. This new technology makes it pretty much impossible for a computer to crack so automated processes like this are eliminated but there is a catch. Ok at first when I read this my first thought was wow are they crazy or what? Then when I figured out how it works I wasn’t quite so shocked. Apparently they are working on a way or are going to just integrate Twitter into OnStar so that you can Tweet while you drive. Sounds dangerous right? Well it actually works using a voice activation system so that it is entirely hands free. Still sounds a bit dangerous to me but much less so than Tweeting with your fingers. I would think it is distracting though but probably no more so than talking on the phone. But that is dangerous too.
