Starry Nights and Wide Open Spaces - 10 Acre Lot in the Columbia River Gorge - Pending When we both first walked this property last summer, the Dixie Chicks song “Wide Open Spaces,” played in our heads. We envisioned a potential buyer recognizing the somewhat remote, and gated location as a perfect retreat from the world. A place to make new adventures. Naturally, with its close proximity to the pristine Columbia River Gorge, it’s surrounded by beauty and recreation. Two flat building sites on the 10 acre parcel give buyers choices. One site has a fabulous view of the Silver Star Mountain and the Washougal River Valley, and the larger site, on the lower slope of the property, is wooded and surrounded by meadows. In the Spring and Summer months, wildflowers dot the open fields and line t...

The Washougal River Washougal River Road is a scenic sixteen and half mile drive from downtown Washougal to Dougan Falls in Skamania County. It winds and curves along the banks of the Washougal River, so it takes longer to travel than the miles alone suggest. We love showing and selling the waterfront homes located along the Washougal. By the way, the name comes from the Cascade Chinook tribe and means "rushing waters." We think it's perfect. Washougal River WaterfallsThere are series of water falls along the 33 mile stretch of the Washougal River. From lowermost to uppermost, the named falls on the river include Salmon, Dougan, Nake, Reeder, Stebbins Creei, and Doc Drop. Dougan Falls is 30 feet high. There's a deep blue pool in front of the falls that is popular in the summer months wi...

I hate to see dogs tied up. I realize sometimes you can't help it, though, especially if your dog is with you when you decide to stop at a restaurant to eat. It's certainly better to tie up your dog and leave a bowl of water for your pet than to lock the poor thing in a car like some morons manage.Strolling along the Columbia River yesterday, we captured a few Ingress portals and then stopped at Clark and Lewie's for lunch. There, on the ramp were two beautiful dogs that seemed oh-so-happy to see us. It wasn't hard once we got inside to figure out who the dog's owners were because they sat directly behind us, and the dogs could see them through the glass, so they started to cry. Really sad, pitiful, mournful cries. Enough so that the owners of the restaurant let them bring the dogs insi...

Skamania Lodge - A Favorite Spot and Dog Friendly Too. We're big fans of Skamania Lodge. It’s located in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area and is about a 30 minute drive from our home in Camas, Washington. Its close proximity makes it one of our favorite spots for a weekend away, a special occasion meal, or just an afternoon of relaxation.   The lodge is build in Pacific Northwest style which translates into a rugged sense of natural elegance in massive proportion.  Soaring ceilings, plenty of glass, heavy beams, massive rock fireplaces, and accents of wood, Native American art and design, and an ode to wildlife mix perfectly in Skamania Lodge’s many rooms.   Skamania - Swift Waters Most of the main rooms in the lodge face the Columbia River. Fishhawk Lake-Trip to Mount St Helens Several members of our family from the east coast came to visit for about a week and one of the trips we took was to visit Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington State in the Gifford Pinchot forest. On May 18, 1980, approximately six months after I moved to Oregon from Philadelphia, PA, Mount St. Helens erupted and I took a photo of it while sitting in a gas station in Gresham, Oregon. It was with a pocket instamatic and it was the last photo of the roll. I have it somewhere, and it shows a plume of smoke with a gas station sign in the foreground. Fast forward 33 years to August 2013 and a stunningly gorgeous day to learn more about an incredible natural occurrence to a volcanic beauty that is slowly changing every day.   It was a...

Speechless Sunday - High Country   I took this photo on the way to a new client's house in Mill A, Washington this afternoon. As the name of the town suggests, this is logging country and although the photo doesn't show it as well as I would like, the drop off here is drastic, plummeting to the river hundreds of feet below. This is a mere four miles from the Columbia River. The peaks and valleys here are simply stunning.

Fall ushers in some of the best hiking of the year in the Columbia River Gorge. Cooler temperatures and clear days make the climbs more enjoyable, while changing leaves make the views even more spectacular. The Columbia River Gorge is so endlessly beautiful, it has been given the unique distinction as a National Scenic Area. The Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area encompasses 292,000 acres. The gorge is an 80 mile canyon carved out of the Cascade Range by the Columbia River. It separates  two states, southern Washington and northern Oregon, and is filled with rugged cliffs, waterfalls, rock pillars and smaller canyons. The Columbia River Gorge is truly a natural treasure and nirvana for hikers and climbers. In fact, this year, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the National Scenic Act, F...

Bridge Of The Gods Kiteboarding Festival This Weekend!   Once again, the Columbia River Gorge will live up to its reputation as the premier kiteboarding destination in the United States. In case you don’t know, kiteboarding is a sport where the athlete stands on a specialized “board” and hangs onto the rigging going to a huge kite. The geological construction of the Columbia River Gorge offers an uncommon, windy location that not only moves the athlete, but can lift him far off the water where he can perform tricks. From all over the US, kiteboarders will be competing August 19 - 21 in the nation's longest running amateur kiteboarding contest. The Festival has the reputation as being the place to compete to move from amateur to professional status. Contestants will compete in the cate...

Looking for a great summer concert that’s close to home? Skamamia Lodge in Stephenson, Washington is currently hosting it’s 2011 Summer Concert series. Concerts are held every Friday evening at the lodge’s Columbia River Gorge Amphitheater. Skamania, the Chinook Indian word for “fast water, is an elegant, but decidedly rustic northwest-style lodge.  The setting is idyllic with unobstructed views of the Columbia River and nearby mountains. You can spread out a blanket on the lawn and soak up the views as Skamania Lodge Summer Concert Series makes beautiful music.   The Crazy 8’s, Linda Hornbuckle and Bobby Torres are just some of the acts scheduled to perform this summer. And should you decide to spend the night, here’s good news. Skamania Lodge is offering special summer discounts on th...

Meet The Honey Man!This is one cool guy... friendly, a real local "character". Last weekend, Mel was photographing a client's land and spent some time taking scenery photos, too. That's when he met Daryl, the Honey Man. He sets up shop from the back of his car on the Washington side of The Bridge of the Gods, near Stevenson, WA. He has 1,200 colonies of bees from which he makes pure, specialty honey.  He mentioned a new combination of blackberry and poison oak variety - interesting. Can't wait to try that one - I think? A lot of his business is return customers which only speaks to how truly wonderful his product is.  Many visitors to the area take his honey home, then contact him for more which he mails out.  Stop by and see Daryl for some great honey.  He is usually on the Washington ...

30 Seconds at Washougal River I've worked all weekend, and in between tasks today, we rode our motorcycles over to Washougal River (great little twisty-windy road) and up to Dugan Falls. Skamania County. On today's ride we went through some nice farm areas and then in to more woodsy settings. Riding a motorcycle, I am aware of the different scents of the places I'm traveling through - the sweet grasses as we pass by the farm, the distinct animal smells as we pass the dairy, the earthy woodsy smell as we approach closer to the falls and the river. Add to that the thermal variations as I drive from sunny to shady areas and it's a full-meal-sensory-deal. I can't help but grin the whole time I'm riding. I'm not an experienced motorcyclist, and I couldn't video the ride, so I brought you the...

30 Seconds on the Pacific Crest Trail You couldn't be there with us, so I took this video of our hike on part of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail spans 2556 miles from Mexico to Canada. The trail has a a great story. Our little part of the trail was accessed across the road from the Washington side of the Bonneville Dam. Probably because of my recent visit to Yellowstone, or maybe because of my ongoing involvement in sustainability here in Vancouver Washington, the importance of the vision that people like Clinton C. Clarke had is on my mind often these days. I hope you will get out and enjoy the benefits of past visionaries and the lovely naturally beautiful lands around Southwest Washington. If you decide to stay, call me and I'll help you find the right home! Whether you're looking...
