Hooray for Spokane's Tree Lined Neighborhoods!   "Leafy, tree-lined streets aren't just good for property values; they may also be good for your health..." according to a news article written by Deborah Netburn, Los Angeles Times - Science Now and re-printed in The Spokesman-Review. Citing a study in the Scientific Reports she explains the various ways that tree-lined neighborhoods contribute to health and well-being.  Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I love trees and I enjoy reading articles such as these. Plus, I like good news from reputable sources.   From a purely business standpoint, mature trees increasing a home's value is great news to homeowners everywhere. How much more welcoming it is to shop for a home on a shady, tree-lined street than a sunny house on a bare lot.  Tre...

The Larson’s of Spokane. This is my Grandma and Grandpa Larson, Edna and Harvey and (L to R) Aunties' Meldred and Marjorie and my Mom, Mary Lee (1961) at the Larson home in Hillyard, Spokane. My cousin sent this old photo to me that I haven't since the 1960's and I’m cracking up because looking at my Mom at just 5 feet tall (and the youngest) she’s the tallest of the sisters! Grandpa Harvey was born in 1874 in Sweden, came to the US as a kid of about 6 and grew up in and around Cadillac, Michigan. As a young man he worked in the timber industry and became a partner in a saw mill. Edna Doyen, born in 1880, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan became the love of his life and they were engaged to be married in 1898, the same year she and her family moved out west to Spokane, Washington. As the family s...

Okay, not so wordless this Wednesday. But the photo says more than I will...I was in Spokane, Washington to teach a few classes May 14 and 15. One of the things I love to do is crack a few jokes before I start a conversation about Twitter... Many who don’t tweet do share a myth. “I don’t use Twitter. It doesn’t make any sense. Like why should I care what you had for lunch?”Of course Twitter is much more than sharing photos of a meal, but I like starting the convo this way because it breaks the tension and gives us opportunity to share smiles and a laugh, and it should. We’re human. We make assumptions all the time about a lot of things we know nothing about. So let’s have some fun with it and explore.Regardless of what we may think, science tells us the images online that hold our atten...

The indigenous people of the area, the Spokanes, date back about 13,000 years. They lived near Spokane Falls in what is now downtown Spokane hunting the abundant wild game, fishing for salmon and gathered plants, roots and berries in the nearby western foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The European explorers and fur traders started showing up in 1810 and the first settlers J.J. Downing and S.R. Scranton established a claim here in 1871. The area really started growing when the Northern Pacific Railway reached Spokane in 1891 and the population rose to almost 37,000 by 1900.My maternal grandfather, Harvey Larson, 24 at the time, came to the area in 1901 from Michigan to follow his 18 year old bride to be, Edna Doyne. Her family moved here in 1898. I remember our adventures from Seattle to...

Are you giving some thought to selling your Spokane WA home in 2015? This could be an excellent year for Real Estate in Spokane. At present however ( 1/17/15 ) our listing inventory is down 11% from this time last year. It's January... and even though it doesn't seem like it- March will come and- boom! People will begin to ready their homes for the SPRING RUSH we experience every year. My suggestion to those thinking about selling a home in Spokane in 2015-  or any Winter city- is to start on your "to do" checklist now, so you don't get overwhelmed come March/April. If you want to list your house in Spring, you will be competing at the high activity times, and need to really have a good plan. There is a ton you can get done in the dead of winter. Namely- cleaning and organizing closets,...

Alert!  Financial Assessment coming to reverse mortgages   It has been relatively easy to get a reverse mortgage in the past but a reverse mortgage may soon be out of reach for some homeowners.  New FHA guidelines tighten underwriting requirements making it more difficult to qualify for this senior home loan.   For retirees who need to supplement their retirement income and to others who wish to simply increase cash flow, a review of their financial strategy should include learning about and considering a reverse mortgage. My advice is to move quickly in order to avoid the more stringent requirements that become standard March 2, 2015.  A financial assessment is standard with a traditional  mortgage so the new guidelines should not be too shocking to reverse mortgage applicants who miss...
