Burien WA. Should’ve been named OuelletvilleWA. This is a great story of what in a Name- Mr.Gottieb Burian Namesake became city of Burien WA just misspelled of the years. Another funny point in this story Burian was not the first settler George Ouellet was the first settler of then Sunnydale. I have not a clue why they call it Sunnydale it rain as much in (Burien) as it does in Seattle but anyway that was the name Burian I mean Burien should have been Ouelletville due to the settlement laws back then, but there more George Ouellet was the first settler but practice strange hazard of starvation to cure one’s ills which resulted in the death of a visiting English heiress in 1911 I think this is the rest of the story why Burien is call Burien instead of Ouelletville.     Some other histori...

Recently there has been quite an increase of people using their land to grow food for their families.  People usually choose to do this either out of economic necessity or for sustainability reasons; eating your home-grown vegetables saves the transportation and energy costs associated with buying your food at the grocery store. An article in the Seattle Times yesterday(6/6/10) gives us a glimpse into a recently revisited form of urban farming - the for-profit farm.  According to the article:      "Commercial urban farming "makes the most of underused urban natural resources, and provides fresh food to people right where they can see it growing from seed to harvest," Nicole Jain Capizzi, former director of a for-profit urban farm in Milwaukee, wrote on the Seattle-based website UrbanFar...

I was just turned on to this inspiring website called The Prudent Homemaker while reading one of my favorite couponing blogs.  The author of Prudent Homemaker is the mother of six children under the age of eight, and the wife of a Realtor.  The "About Us" page chronicles the last two years of having a limited to no income, and how having a stockpile of food, a garden, and applied cooking skills helped this mom put healthy food on the table during those tough times where there was no money for groceries.  She rarely sets foot in a store, even for groceries. I think that anyone can appreciate this story of how this family flourished and radiated gratitude during some incredibly stressful times.  She doesn't have a blog, but posts recipe and other article updates regularly.  It's a testame...

It's officially garage sale season again, and if you're anything like me you're searching the house for unwanted or unnecessary junk to get rid of.  There's a great article over at Mummy Deals that offers 20 steps for a successful garage/yard sale: http://www.mummydeals.org/2010/05/20-tips-to-holding-profitable-garage.html Aside from getting rid of excess stuff, if you have kids this is a great way for them to learn some selling and negotiating skills.  In the process they can also clear their room of clothes and toys they've outgrown, and earn money for the new items that they desire!   They love making all of the signs, too. If I had one tip to add to the list, it would be to check the Farmer's Almanac for the best day to hold it weather-wise, at least in the Northwest.  Another tip I...

My mother just got word that she's been accepted at a senior housing building on the islands, so I am under the gun to find a good moving company to move her belongings across the pond. Things have been pretty busy lately, so for some reason I wasn't thinking straight in regards to my search for a mover.  Sometimes I can slip back into my old-fashioned ways.  I start to reach for phone books.  I actually call companies whose names begin with AAA.  I go onto Craigslist, and against my better judgment, start searching in the 'Services' section.   So I PRINT OUT a few ads and bring them with me to Target, so that I can call while having a beverage before doing my shopping.  No one answers so I leave messages. With one of those companies, it was my second attempt at reaching them. It had be...

Having sold plenty of items in my life, I am aware that pointing out an item's faults, whether that item is a car, a house, a piece of furniture, etc, is a tried and true negotiating tool used for the purpose of diminishing the value in the eyes of a seller and ultimately bringing the asking price down. However, there is a fine line between having a courteous and honest discussion about a property's condition and being so obnoxious as to back the seller into a corner to where they feel so "broken" that they must acquiesce against their will. An example - several years ago when I was living in Phoenix I had my car for sale for $1,000.  A guy from the neighborhood made an appointment to see the car, came over, and proceeded to bad-mouth every single aspect of my car.  I had kept it impecc...

In December, as I was transfering information from my old (paper!) planner to my new one, I noticed something that I hadn't laid eyes on in a year: my list of goals for 2009.  My first thought was, "What's it doing here, in the very back page of my planner?"  Then I thought to myself that it would have been nice to have been able to go back to this periodically throughout the year to see how I was doing and to make sure none of the goals that I wanted to achieve got lost along the way. So, it's February 2010 and I'm cleaning off my desk, and what do I find under one of my files? My goals for 2010.  The 3 loose pages were a heartbeat away from being crammed into the Bookshelf of Obsolete Files. I'm revisiting the goals I set last month right now.   So far I'm actually doing a pretty good...
