I have been a Realtor® in the Stowe, Vermont area since 1998 and this recession is really starting to get to me.  I have certainly felt the change these past few years.  As most of you know, our living costs and business expenses certainly have not gone down.  And for most of us, our income has not kept up with our family and professional expenses.  Many have faced the question - do I really want to stay in this business?  Yes, but what can I do to help pay the bills?  Then I saw an ad in the paper - CENSUS WORKERS NEEDED - pays relatively well, flexible hours, short term.  Perfect!  I called and was told all those interested need to take a test.  Oh NO - now the pressure is on.  Okay, yes I really do want this job.  What intrigued me about being a Census Lister is that you get to be ou...

Stowe, Vermontis a very quaint New England Town known for it's quintessential charm best seen in the Village area and for the highest mountain in Vermont, Mt. Mansfield.  Stowe has become a well-known 4 season resort.  Activities include skiing, snowboarding, craft shows, hot air balloons, antique car shows, Stowe Recreation Path, horseback riding, fishing, etc.  Plus, we have may great places to eat and lounge. Like most areas in the USA, Vermont is feeling the pains of our current economy.  Fortunately, most real estate values have held fairly well.  Our banks tend to more conservative and Vermont has had a relatively low number of foreclosures.  Stowe has a year round population of about 4,500.  Many of our properties are owned by second home owners/vacation owners.  As a result of t...

First, this is my first Active Rain Blog.  I've been checking into this world for some time now and decided to give it a shot. Last night, which happened to be my birthday (don't ask which one), my husband and I travelled to Danville, Vermont - which is out in the boonies - on a very cold night - about 5 degrees.  My son, Sam, is a 15 year old sophomore at Stowe High School.  He has been playing basketball since he was about 7.  He's never been a "star" player, but has always been a solid, well-rounded player who knows the game.  He is of average height and speed.  The other team had twice as many team members - they don't have a hockey team like Stowe does.  They weren't great, and neither was Stowe.  Sam, my son, played most of the game.  He scored about 20 points.  He always plays as...

Here are some pictures that I took along the Stowe Recreation Path, a 5.5 mile path (11 miles round trip) that is popular for walks, jogging, bicycling and roller blading with both local residents and tourists.  Stowe is a ski resort town in northern Vermont which has a vibrant downtown with over 70 restaurants and many shops.  Stowe is a wonderful town to visit for winter skiing, fall foliage and its temperate summers.  The mountains are absolutely amazing. The Rec Path is so beautiful.  On a nice day, I can take 50 photographs on a stroll or bike ride along the path.  There are numerous views including of the mountains, river, farmland and valley.  I compare the backdrop of Stowe to Monet's Water Lily paintings - you can have the same subject, yet have many different depictions of tha...

Stowe Coffee House is located at the corner of Route 100 and Mountain Road in Stowe, Vermont.  It is one of my favorite places.  Yesterday, I went to the Coffee House before going for a bike ride.  What I like about Stowe Coffee House is that it is a small establishment, you see the same people every time you go in, there is always a friendly atmosphere and it has that small town feeling that you just don't find in many places.  Stowe is a resort town which has an amazing ski resort.  The coffee shop is located in the downtown, about eight miles from the mountain.  They have comfy interior seating for about thirty and outdoor seating for about fifteen.  They have a beautiful interior with hardwood floor, nice comfy sofas and chairs and a smattering of books, magazines, newspapers and ga...

"Steeped in history, forged in nature, wrapped in luxury-a new legend is rising in the heart of Vermont. Inspired by the mountain that gave birth to the American skiing tradition, Spruce Peak at Stowe stands poised to deliver a new era in luxury alpine living." from their website. . . I was foresighted enough to recognize that this project was going to be very cool, but I really had no idea how spectacular a finished product they were going to produce.  For decades, Stowe had rested on some slightly sagging laurels, its early (I mean real early) contributions to the development of the US ski industry, of course its charm and history as a New England resort town, but the ski area seemed to have missed the boat for much of the last quarter of the Twentieth Century.  Snow making and uphill...

Forbes Magazine, in an article dated June 2007, swooned over corporate giant AIG's ongoing $400 million dollar project to turn Stowe into the "Vail of the East" as some are calling it. With it's outstanding 18 hole "wilderness golf course" designed by Bob Cupp, "Beast of the East" skiing on it's legendary Front Four, luxury slope side Mountain Cabins, luxury condo-hotel in the soon to be unveiled Stowe Mountain Lodge, a pedestrian friendly shopping mall, performing arts center and skating rink, all located at the base of Spruce Peak! Before breaking ground, $40 million was packed into the mountain's snow making infrastructure. Now, with a state of the art automated system on Spruce Peak and guns that can make snow slightly above freezing Stowe is coming back in a BIG WAY.All this and you...
