Archer Mayor, a prominent Vermont author, will be making an appearance at Phoenix Books in Burlington, VT on Friday October 17, 2014 to discuss his latest book, Proof Positive.  This book is the 25th book in a series which is based on fictional police detective Joe Gunther.  The Gunther books all take place at different locations in Vermont.    The books in the Joe Gunther series have been published at a rate of approximately one per year since 1988 and have consistently ranked in yearly Top 10 lists by such well respected venues as the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post and the New Yorker.  I have read many of his books myself and am happy to also give my seal of approval :)   Mayor began writing while employed as a medical examiner.  Having examined over 500 deaths, he is very ...

August First Bakery and Cafe has been a welcome addition to Burlington, Vermont's culinary scene. Affectionately named after it's inception date, August First recently celebrated it's fifth year business anniversary on August 1, 2014 with a roaring block party. Here is a short video with some photos from this wonderful restaurant. I particularly like it'sen plein air dining with it's retractable front wall and deck. They have a wonderful menu and a fun and courteous staff. August First is located at 149 S Champlain in Burlington and can be reached at (802) 540-0060. A copy of their menu can be viewed here.

Burlington Rock Camp for teenagers will be holding it's second session from August 4th - 8th, 2014. The one week camp takes all levels of musicians to create and perform their own recorded song from start to finish in one week. Children will form their own bands and write their own music with minimal input from instructors so that they can take on leadership roles and experience their own creativity. There will even be visits from local bands who will perform for the students and assist with their time in the recording studio. I have known children who have participated in this camp and have attended their end of the week concert which is open to the pubic. I can attest that this program is top notch. Most of the bands wind up performing as good as any that we hear on the radio. The cam...

American Flatbread is celebrating it's 10 Year Anniversary this Sunday on June 22, 2014. St.Paul Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for the big anniversay party from 4 - 9 p.m. American Flatbread is so thankful to it's loyal customers that it will be providing free pizza along with live music for people to enjoy. American Flatbread is a Burlington mainstay and one of our most popular restaurants. Patrons enjoy the novelty of watching pizza made in the wood fired clay oven made with local rock which is located in the dining room. During the warmer weather, they open the outdoor seating area which is where I dined tonight. I can personally attest to the extremely impressive quality of American Flatbread's pizza. Come out and join in on the fun!

On Saturday June 14th at 8 pm, musical legend Patty Griffin is coming to the Flynn in Burlington Vermont. A folk-music force of nature, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter has been an American mainstay for 20 years. The Maine native uses her breathtakingly strong vocals to hurl our imaginations into the essence of Americana, show-casing her unique ability to capture the elusive eccentricities of human emotions and the peculiarity of love. In her 2013 release, American Kid, musical pundit Paste Magazine observed Griffin "taking emotional truths and cutting to the quick, her razor-sharp sense of detail has never been sharper". The homage to her father is as poignant as it is masterfully written and sung. Vermont is a little bit like those exquisitely procured museums or masterfully...
