I'm reprinting a newspaper article which appeared 23 years ago in the Daily Press & Times Herald and written by Segar Cofer Dashiell, one of the best historians from Smithfield, Virginia and Isle of Wight County. It's a 1988 article she wrote about the body of water that surrounds to western boundary of the Gatling Pointe community which our company started development on that year. Gatling Pointe is a 500 home waterfront community located where the James and Pagan Rivers meet adjacent to the historic town of Smithfield (which was incorporated in 1750 as a town). Moone Creek, mistakenly named on navigation charts sometime in the 1950's, separates the neighborhood from the town and is located in the County. Having had a family member research our family history to Robert Edwards and Ann ...

After finally getting our power back on yesterday afternoon, I reflected on what had just transpired the last 72 hours. Man, I really miss my air conditioning and cable TV! In all seriousness, having survived another hurricane in the Tidewater area of Virginia, it makes me really appreciate our family and helps me realize what's most important in my life. Hurricane Irene hit our neighborhood pretty hard all day Saturday and into the night. We were very lucky in our neighborhood of Gatling Pointe, located in Smithfield, VA. Yes, we had one large oak tree come down and alot of limbs, but our home was intact and we experienced no flooding (we are 20' above sea level here in Isle of Wight County). Others were not so fortunate. Here's the picture of the western sky from the Gatling Pointe Ya...

Olde World Tea Company, Smithfield, VA - A Tea Room Just A Ferry Ride from Jamestown and Williamsburg   The Old World Tea Company in Smithfield, Virginia is a wonderful gem to be found if you are exploring the area around Williamsburg and Jamestown Virginia.  Teahouses or tearooms are not that common and to find one not far from Williamsburg was a treat for us when we were in the area earlier this year.    If you are visiting Williamsburg there is a ferry that will give you another view of the Jamestown settlement from the water, and take you to the roads that lead to Smithfield.    Smithfield is a wonderful little town with Victorian homes lining the main street, an art gallery in the Visitor Center and the Old World Tea Company where you can enjoy a wonderful lunch and have the tea of...

Looking for a way to raise money for the American Red Cross? Our neighborhood community association Board deserves alot of credit. In less than a month, they organized a 5k family Run and BBQ at our neighborhood yacht club- all to help raise money for the American Red Cross. It was put together in just a matter of weeks, but you couldn't tell by the way it was run on Saturday. $807 was raised for the American Red Cross. Plans have already begun for next year's race and I'm sure it will be bigger and better, judging by those who participated in the Gatling Pointe event yesterday. Gatling Pointe is a waterfront community adjacent to the small town of Smithfield, Virginia. The neighborhood has its own clubhouse restaurant, riverfront pool complex, playground, tennis & volleyball couts, an...

If you enjoy walking, jogging, or just taking a stroll around town, then you'll love the new Windsor Castle Trail park located in historic Smithfield, Virginia.   Located right in the heart of downtown Smithfield, this riverside park features a dog park, bike and walking paths, a woodland trail system, picnic and play areas, kayak and canoe launch, fishing pier, scenic overlook and the Windsor Castle Historic Site. Scenic views of the river, creek, and marsh help make the approximate three mile run/jog a memorable experience. You can start your trail at three different locations, my favorite is the Smithfield Station entrance, which is a restaurant/marina/hotel with shops and a boardwalk at the entrance of the downtown historic district. Smithfield Station is a popular tourist spot and ...

I want to start a discussion and get some input.  My family is going through the grueling task of buying a home.  It sucks and we hate it.  You would think that I being a Broker and having done this for almost 10 years it would be easy but it's not.  We are going through the same thing that everyone else does.  We have the same fears and doubts that everyone else does except that when it gets ugly I get it for being the one pushing for this house, then I get it for being the Realtor!  Oh well, the point is I believe that things will get better quicker than anyone could ever imagine. 1.  I don't want to bore you with facts and figures because if you don't follow it you probably wouldn't believe it.      A. The U.S.A. has had 18 recessions, yes 18, and some were much worse that what we ju...

Shape up in a home gym Stay home. Get fit. Who needs a gym membership when some equipment and a spare room will do? By Nora FirestoneThe Virginian-Pilot© January 11, 2011 Traditionally, the commitment to better health and fitness tops lists of New Year's resolutions across America. But for many, the long road to promises begins anew once those lists become confetti only weeks into January. Mark and Lina Edwards of Smithfield manage to stay on track with the help of their home gym. Once three children had outgrown the playroom, the couple, now 48, hauled in the Universal-type weight set from the garage and relocated several rooms worth of Virginia Tech memorabilia to create an ideal home-fitness setting. Today, an elliptical machine and treadmill flank a homework desk and television. Thr...

Happy Holidays from East West Communities in Virginia! enjoy these winter scenes from our Founders Pointe community, located near Smithfield, Virginia. What our residents love about Virginia is the enjoyment of all four seasons, but not any one season in extreme. We don't get alot of snow here, so when we do, I like to go out and take photos of the neighborhood and of people's homes. We've had two small snows already this month, which is unusual. Founders Pointe is a new home, waterfront community of 319 single family custom homes. Since our grand opening in 2005, we've helped 150 families relocate here from all over. Our residents love the quiet, cul-de-sac neighborhood streets, the walking trails and sidewalks, and the 844' Observation pier that offers stunning views of the James Rive...

Friday night, we went down to our neighborhood clubhouse located at the confluence for the James and Pagan Rivers, for dinner and drinks with our friends and neighbors and caught up on the week's events. Saturday, we gathered again at the yacht club for an afternoon of college football as our favorite college team played an away game. (Yep, a few golden beverages were enjoyed again). Sunday, we enjoyed the beautiful sunshiny day and took our 23' SeaRay Sun Deck out for an afternoon cruise on the James. Life is Good! It occured to me that we are very lucky to have a riverfront club complex, marina, and a neighborhood of friends and neighbors to share our life experiences, and a place to interact together. Our kids are now either in college or about to finish their high school careers, a...

Founded in 1632, Historic St Luke's Church is the oldest church of English origin in America and is the oldest example of Gothic architecture in America. Located in Smithfield, Va. - Isle of Wight County. The church was originally referred to as the "Old Brick Church" until named St. Luke's Episcopal Church in 1820. The church has played a prominent role in the early colonial era as well as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. In 1953 St' Luke's was declared a National Shrine and in 1960 becomes a National Historical Landmark.   Below is one of my favorite headstones erected for a 10 year old girl that died in the 1920's   Below is a detail of the Pocahontas Stained Glass Window within the Church Copyright Notice All images appearing herein are the exclusive property of B. Walking down Main Street in Smithfield, Virginia, any visitor will have the sense that they are returning to America's past. The downtown district is small and filled with history, and townspeople are congenial. You will feel like you may see Aunt Bea, Opie, Barny Fife or Sherrif Andy of Mayberry as you stroll the Streets of Smithfield, Virginia. Folks greet each other by first names. A casual trip to the deli and bakery is an opportunity to greet neighbors. Contrary to many metropolitan areas on the East Coast, Smithfield is not fast paced or stressful. A visit to Smithfield is a journey into America's beginnings. Smithfield, Virginia and Isle of Wight County were settled in the 17th Century, and their rich history dates to Colonial times, when this part of the world was still under th...
