The Macarthur Memorial in Downtown Norfolk will soon be getting a $4.5 million makeover and expansion.   There will be a glass fronted great hall and a story wall that will face the street.  The goal of the project is to draw more visitors to the downtown site to learn about the accomplishments of the five-star general.  The improvements are seen as dynamic and inviting.  With a cruise ship berth and the new light rail station just across the street, the new center is looking to bring in a lot more visitors.

The Five Points Community FArm Market is searching for a new home.  Apparently the current location is drawing interst for a prospective tenant that wants to pay more for rent then it does.  Where does a Farmers Market move to?  They were looking at MacArthur Center but that has stalled for the moment.  They are looking for something with over 3000 sq ft of space and would like to stay in the Norview area.  Hopefully they will be able to make that happen.

Zola gave birth to two tiny little furry cubs this weekend.  The lioness apparently kept her showgirl figure and displayed no outward signs that she was packing.  The cubs have about a 50% chance of surviving the say zoo officials.  This is the first large carnivore birth at the zoo in 50 years.  Mramba, her mate, had been practicing for at least a year.  The cubs will stay for a year at the zoo and then will move on to continue the breeding process.

Arn Salasky has an idea to build a bike path on Ocean View Ave.  Sounds like a great idea and a way to help the community but alas it was met with tepid response from city officials.  Some have thier own plans and others just say the idea will be looked at.  Come on Norfolk, get on your bikes and head to city hall.

No its not a clothes detergent but a burst of brown algae in portions of the Elizabeth and Lafayette riveres.  The dense patches of plant life, are not believed to be toxic but I wouldn't swim in it anyways.  Hot temperatures, and nutrient enrichment hasten plant growth and hence the mucky mess.  There may be localized fish kills as the algae soaks up the oxygen in the water.  As temperatures cool down the mess will go away.

The cities animal shelter is getting a new name and logo.  The animal shelter has a lot of problems including no director at the moment but city officials are trying to fix the problems.  They have renamed the place to the Animal Care Center and are spending money to fix the place up and advertise to help clear out some of the animals.  Hopefully it will succeed.

I found this thirty year historical interest rate graph to be very enlightling, I hope that you do as well. It sure is nice to know that interest rates are still historically lower than they have been in twenty five years.

A New York based production company will provde a guarantee that Chrysler Hall season ticket holders aren't left with worthless tickets it the group goes out business.  Broadway Across America has agreed to a $500,000 performance bond to ensure that what happend this year won't happen again.  I'm sure season ticket holders will be happy with that and so will Norfolk as the city footed the bill for the fiasco this year.

The city of Norfolk has lost yet another round in trying to build on the 21 acre tree lined property.  The property in East Ocean View has been scheduled for 85 homes but now looks to be a lost cause by the city.  The standoff started nearly four years ago when the Norfolk Redevelopement Authority said they were going to build houses on the property when it was originally scheduled to be a park.  Since then, the underfunded but not outgunned Bay Oaks Park commitee has fought the city of Norfolk all the way to the Supreme Court. The mayor doesn't feel the city needs to have a referendum.

The Midtown Tunnel will close to traffic this weekend to test the tide gate and to resurface the tunnel's roads, the Virginia Department of Transportation said Tuesday. The tunnel will be closed starting at 11:30 p.m. Friday and will remain closeded until 5 a.m. Monday, VDOT said. The Downtown Tunnel can be used as an alternate route. At other times, the closings have been staggered over a longer period of time but VDOT wanted to eliminate multiple closures and complete the work in a minimum amount of time. Could they really be talking about our VDOT?

!!!It’s Here; It’s Here!!! The Pungo (Virginia Beach) Strawberry Festival Of Course May 26th-27th 9am-7pm The parade will begin 10am May 26th Why will the one-traffic light hamlet of Pungo have a population boom this weekend of over 120,000 people? Three words explain it: Pungo Strawberry Festival. For the past 24 years, the village has hosted the annual two-day celebration honoring it s sentimental favorite fruit. From a small grass roots festival of 50,000 guests at the inaugural Memorial Day weekend fest to last year's 120,000. No money comes from the city and proceeds go back to the community. "It 's a great, family-friendly, fun event," said Sheriff Paul J. Lanteigne, a longtime festival volunteer and this year's honorary mayor of Pungo. "This is an old-time event that brings ever...
