Go Green Tip #5: Ask the Experts For An Energy Audit of Your Home... How green is your abode? A home energy audit, which most utility providers will do free of charge, will tell you the amount of power your household consumes and what you can do to reduce it. The average family can find ways to shave 1,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions each year. Energy auditors use special equipment like blower doors and infrared cameras to help you pinpoint exactly how your house is losing energy. You can also perform a do-it-yourself audit (see time.com/audit), but this is one time you might actually want to be audited by the experts  A professional auditor uses a variety of techniques and equipment to determine the energy efficiency of a structure. Thorough audits often use equipment such as blower doors, w...

According to a recent poll on how consumers intend to spend their stimulus checks, 19% of consumers plan on using their economic stimulus check for a special purchase, and 23% plan to use their check for everyday expenses. The rest...well, 36% say they will pay down debt and 22% say they will put it into savings. But will the check burn a hole through their pockets? Maybe so, particularly with the "stimulus check" specials that many retailers have come up with, offering bonuses and incentives for people who spend their "stimulus" dollars with them. Here are some examples, in case you want to take advantage of any offers: Sears. If you use your stimulus check to purchase a gift card, you receive an additional gift card worth 10% of your check's value. This offer is also good at Kmart and...

Last Friday I received an email from the developer of a large condo/loft project in Tysons announcing that The Lofts at Park Crest are now renting from $2213 a month...what?  This was supposed to be Tysons premier property FOR SALE.  Looks like another victim of the down market - another condo sale project converting to rentals. I inquired as to the status of the entire project and was told that only the Lofts are converting to apartments, the Towers are still for sale.  So, if you are looking for a GREAT rental in the Tysons area, look no further!  You can check out the website here at www.parkcrestapt.com/ Right now they are also offering a rental special - one month FREE or a $2500 gift card to Golfdom or Williams-Sonoma when you rent - available for a July 2008 move-in.  The archite...

Property taxes seem to jump up year after year. Unfortunately, we've become so accustomed to rising taxes that it's no longer a surprise. But here's something that may surprise you. Did you know that over the last eight years, property taxes have actually outpaced even inflation? Those rising taxes - combined with the recent plateau in home values in some areas - mean you may be paying more than your fair share. In fact, the National Taxpayers Union estimated that as many as 60% of home values were assessed too high, resulting in an incorrectly larger property tax bill. Based on recent market activity and the rising property taxes across the country, there's a chance you may be in the group of people paying too much. In fact, homeowners in declining markets are receiving solicitations fr...

Starting May 12th, it'll cost you one extra little penny to mail someone your thoughts. That's right...the US Postal Service is getting ready to make some price changes, and the biggest change for most consumers will be a price increase for First Class stamps from 41c to 42c.The news isn't all bad, though. That's because for the first time in the history of the US Postal Service, the new pricing structure will include online price reductions, rebates, commercial volume and contract prices, as well as several other new incentives. The heat must be on the USPS to be competitive in pricing, as according to Postmaster General John Potter: "These innovative pricing incentives will make our products more attractive to all shippers, especially small businesses. We're pricing our products to se...

I truly believe that in the coming year, purchasing in the first quarter will allow the buyers to take advantage of current market conditions.  I am experiencing very dilligent purchasers ready to invest and find new primary residents.  I am also experiencing purchasers interests in new construction is waning? Does anyone have an opinion or could you shed some light on your experience?Thank you and wish all of the members a very merry Happy New Year.

Tysons Corner, Virginia is home to numerous big-name companies, the highest concentration of office and retail space on the East Coast after New York City, some wonderful restaurants, large shopping malls, world-class hotels, and lots of traffic.  Some of this traffic should be alleviated over the next 5-10 years with the planned completion of the Metro rail through Tysons Corner en route to Dulles Airport. Many people commute to Tysons Corner as their place of business in the D.C. metro area.  Fewer people actually live there at night, but those that do enjoy the amenities that the area has to offer.  Condominiums form the majority of the homes available in Tysons Corner. Tysons itself is an unincorporated area between McLean, Virginia and Vienna, Virginia.    How much do condos in Tys...
