Tysons Corner was a hub of activity this past weekend. Not only was it Father's Day, but American Girl celebrated the grand opening of its newest, 23,000 square foot store at Tysons Corner Center. Families started lining up at 2:30 on Friday afternoon to be a part of the grand opening which took place Saturday morning.  By Saturday evening over 5,000 people had visited the store. The American Girl store is indeed a national phenomenonwith a hugh following.  It offers its customers a wide variety of dolls, games, DVD's and books.  Matching outfits for girls and their dolls are also available. American Girl even has a beauty salon for the dolls and a bistro for dining.  In addition to all of this, special events and parties are also big attractions that the store offers. With Father's Day tomorrow, you can't help but think of the Father of our Country, George Washington.  Tysons Corneris very near many historical monuments in the greater DC metropolitan area, so taking in some history can be an interesting way to celebrate Dad. Why not visit the Washington Monument during Father's Day weekend?  After visiting the monument, you can visit Mount Vernon, George Washington's beautiful country estate.  Mount Vernon is hosting a special Father's Day event a must for all fathers who are history buffs.  All fathers who visit Mount Vernon will also receive complimentary tickets to George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill. If Dad likes the outdoors, Great Falls Park is located in nearby McLean, right along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. This 800-acre, h...

Sitting between McLean and Vienna, Tyson’s Corner, VA is the 12th largest employment center in the country.  Unlike some bedroom suburbs that lie outside big cities like Washington, DC, the daytime population of Tyson’s Corner balloons from 20,000 to over 100,000 as commuters  drive in to work and shop.  Due to the congestion, it’s not surprising that the current expansion of the DC Metro to better serve Tyson’s Corner is receiving rave reviews.  The expected transformation of Tyson’s Corner is exciting too! As part of a long-term plan to expand the Metro to Dulles International Airport, the “Silver Line” will help relieve some of the traffic woes of Tyson’s Corner, as well as to plan for future development there. The expansions will involve sharing some track with the existing Blue an...

I have a confession to make.  I DON'T watch "Real Housewives."  I don't care whether they're in Orange County, New York City, or even on my home turf here in Washington D.C.  I don't even watch the hit show Desperate Housewives... anymore.  Apparently these Real Housewives shows are a big hit.  Many people, perhaps you, enjoy getting a voyeuristic look into the drama of these marriages aired on television for all to see.  Don't ask me for a summary of the show -- I've maybe caught a minute or two snippet while my wife was flipping channels -- that was more than enough for me, but to each their own. Nevertheless, what I do spend time watching is the local real estate market.  When a celebrity's home comes on the market in the D.C. area, it can be big news -- even national news.  Well, on...

Remember when you were young?  Your mother told you never to throw rocks and with good reasons: you could hurt somebody, you could hurt yourself, or you could break a neighbor's window. If you're in McLean, Virginia, here's another reason: If you throw a rock, your more likely than not to hit a million dollar home.  Take a look at this chart below which shows the distribution of prices for all McLean homes currently on the market. Suze Orman - The Oprah Winfrey Show regular guest and Americas Financial Advisor as she is called delivers hardcore financial gut checks to everyday Americans on a regular basis. In her latest book, The Money Class, she also recently delivered a pretty striking declaration: that the American Dream - which, for many, includes home ownership and upward economic mobility - is as dead as a doornail. To back this up, she points to huge numbers of jobless and what she sees as the near impossibility of getting credit these days. And then there is Warren Buffett. He just happens to be the third richest human on the planet.  In Buffett's most recent financial report and letter to his daughter and to his company's shareholders, he, too, made a striking declaration of his feelings about owning a h...

The sales activity at the Fountains of Mclean was great in 2010. There were 24 homes sold in 2010 versus 23 homes sold in 2009. The lowest price was a 1br/1ba unit that sold for $200,000. The highest price was a 2br/2ba property at $337,000. The sales mix has changed this year. In 2009 about 35% of the sales were foreclosures or short sales. In 2010, only 8% of the sales were foreclosures or short sales. That is a huge change and very encouraging for homeowners and home values. The 2009 average price for a 1 bedroom unit was $208,042. The 2009 average price for a 2 bedroom unit was $309,150.In 2010 the average price for a 1 bedroom unit had increased to $217,184 and 2 bedroom units remained pretty flat at $308,125. So, prices were pretty flat from 2009-2010. Homes on average sell for 96...
