Downtown Farmville Is Awarded the title of Designated Virginia Main Street Community Farmville is a great place to live.  There is a committed and very active group of volunteers who are part of Downtown Farmville that are excited about change and the future.  This group along with the leadership of Gerry Spates, town manager and the assistance of Cindy Morris, as representatives of the Town of Farmville completed a complicated and detailed application for the Designated Virginia Main Street Community application. Directions to Real Living Cornerstone Have Changed - Now We Are Located Beside a Wells Fargo On the corner of North and Third sits Real Living Cornerstone.  For years, I have navigated people to the office by letting them know that we were across the street from the Wachovia Drive Thru.  Everyone knew where that was.  Now the Wachovia is Wells Fargo.  Even the Wachovia people seem confused by the name change.  I told a customer today that I was across from the Wells Fargo drive thru.  They didn't know where that was.  So I said across from the Wachovia drive thru, that they knew.  After awhile of them not showing up, I called.  I asked if they had gotten lost.  They indeed were looking for the Wachovia drive thru--which is no more! They wanted to know where the new drive thru was! They ...

Carytown - Just One of the Great Locations for a Trip to Richmond about 60 miles from Farmville I love that my wonderful little home town of Farmville is within 1-1 1/2 hours of three great cities which all have distinct characters. I previousy blogged about Charlottesville, which lies to the North. The state capitol of Richmond lies to the east and it would take many blogs to cover all the different attractions that await in Richmond. For a more eclectic taste in shopping and some incredible fine eating Carytown holds a wealth of wonders. Carytown is known for having a more bohemian feel and this is reflected in the shops and the many different styles of food available, mainly along Cary Street. You will find lots of locally owned, independently run stores which offer items you won't f...

Google +1 -- How Helpful it Would be if You Would Give Me a +1 As a business owner, we need all the help we can get.  As a consumer, we want to know when someone does a good job.  It seems as if Google is trying to give us a ratings platform that is easy and productive. It would be helpful to Real Living Cornerstone, and other small businesses if you would be kind enough to let Google know that you like working with us. This post is written to let you know how you can do just this!  Go ahead, enjoy the power of +1'ing your favorite places.  You will enjoy it, I know you will.   To be able to use +1 you need a public Google profile. You may already have one if you use Google regularly. The first step is to set up a Google account. If you already have one you can skip this step. If you ar...

This post is written entirely from the perspective of me as a parent. Prince Edward County Schools This year I will have a rising senior and a sophomore. I am amazed at how time flies and my children have grown. They attend Prince Edward County High School.  Although this attendance is by default-it is the only local public high school choice for our county-it is not their only choice.  We have always kept the option of private school open and yet have never felt the need to go that route. In Prince Edward County there is a huge private school contingency and a large home-schooling contingency.  I know that have such large community participation in those two venues does pull resources and people away from the public school, as I am sure it does in any community. All parent's make educa...

When and Where are Town of Farmville Fourth of July Fireworks? Farmville Fireworks are Actually Held July 3rd at the Farmville Airport One of the things I love about Farmville is their spectacular show of fireworks.  Farmville does fireworks really good!  We have 2 events a year when the fireworks are a show stopper:  Heart of Virginia Festival held in May and 4th of July Fireworks. One of the interesting things about Farmville is that the 4th of July fireworks are actually held on July 3rd.  ALWAYS! This interesting twist ends up providing the town workers a true holiday on the 4th.  In addition to a great schedule for town of Farmville employees it allows many residents to see two sets up fireworks.  On July 4th the town of Meherrin hosts an fireworks show that is also really good.   ...

Come to Farmville, Virginia and take a walk.  A nice long, relaxing walk on Virginia's newest state park.  The High Bridge Trail State Park is a multi-use trail that is suitable for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The centerpiece of the trail will be the High Bridge which is 160 feet above the Appomattox River and 2400 feet long.  The bridge was built in 1853 as part of the South Side Railroad. The High Bridge Trail State Park runs right thru the middle of Farmville VAand is 30 miles long.  It covers a large part of Central Virginia.  The park was a rail line that has been coverted to a trail.  The trail is finely crushed limestone, is flat and easy for all park goers to use. FarmVille Comes to Farmville VA This week started out with the Town of Farmville, The Tree Planting Foundation, Zynga (Virtual Game FarmVille) and Edy's Fruit Bars joining together to plant a community orchard next to the Wilck's Lake Boat Ramp. Top players from the FarmVille game were brought in from around the country to help plant a real orchard consisting of the very same trees they plant so often on their virtual farm. Volunteers of all ages came out to join in the fun of creating this orchard, including our own Brock Robinson. After planting a tree volunteers were given a BBQ lunch, refreshing Edy's products and enjoyed some Bluegrass music. I'm this orchard will only add to the charm and character of our town, but it might also let everyone know, that yes Farmville is a real place.

Where to Stay While Visiting Farmville Virginia--Longwood Bed and Breakfast--Located in Farmville Virginia As you plan your visit to Farmville, Virginia you may ask yourself where should I stay? Longwood Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful old home situated on a hill on High Street, in downtown Farmville.  Conveniently located within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants, Longwood University, Green Front Furniture and the High Bridge Trail State Park.  This historic home was formerly known as the Alumni House.  The Longwood University Bed and Breakfast is open to the public. This home was built in 1880 and was the private residence of Dr. Cunningham.  Dr. Cunningham was the President of Female State Normal School (now Longwood University) from 1887-1897.  The property was late...

The Heart of Virginia Festival is an event that helped me come to love my town~Farmville, VA.  This great event held on the first Saturday of May every year is a day long event with something to offer everyone. I love the opportunities that this great event offers the community. The Heart of Virginia Festival started as an Art Festival 33 years ago.  And still today, amazing artists come and sell their artwork on the grounds of Longwood University.  In addition to the art festival portion of the Heart of Virginia Festival you can buy plenty of Mother's Day presents, homemade jewelry, knicks and knacks for your home, candles, quilts, baskets and more.  The crafters are like family, many have been coming for years and greet the festival-goers with a familiarity that warms the heart.  In a...
