Reston has always intrigued me. Do you know how it got its name?…from being a restful place to live? Steve Bachman: No Marnie, Reston is a peaceful place to live…but the name Reston was derived from the initials of Robert E. Simon, the man behind the outstanding design, vision, and creation of Reston. That is a sculpture of him above sitting on a bench a Lake Anne Center. I will write about the history of Reston from time to time, since it is an intriguing topic for anyone interested in real estate development and the thought process...

I must say that I am sorely disappointed with the old data I have come across on the main public home search programs... 4 of the 5 homes that I wanted more info. on turned out to have been sold or put under contract days (sometimes weeks) ago. What do you recommend I do? Steve Bachman: Cara, the reason the big public home search programs are so out of date and such time wasters is that they have to pull info from hundreds of separate Multiple Listing Services from all over the country. It is a huge data transfer problem. We have ...

I live in Greenbriar and am not too far from a number of Fairfax County's indoor pools. Steve: Absolutely, positively without equivocation. In general, the swimming community is the most supportive group of families we have come across in the 17 years that we have been involved with kids sports in Fairfax County. The Special needs volunteers are as you can imagine...outstanding human beings. Greenbriar has a great outdoor pool for summer enjoyment, usually opening around Memorial Day ad closing arou...

Fairfax VA Real Estate Market Report - December 2009 for Fairfax Virginia Real Estate.  Fairfax VA Homes sales real estate market report from MRIS our MLS was just released December 10, 2009 and it includes statistics for Fairfax Homes Sold in November 2009.  These Fairfax real estate homes sales reports are always very insightful to determine sales and marketing trends.  To better explain what is happening in our Fairfax real estate market...I created a comparative chart of homes in Fairfax Virginia sold over the same period in November 2005-2008.  In November 2009 there were 1113 home sold in Fairfax Virginia.  Again this is a sharp contrast to the peak in home sales in November of 2005 in Fairfax when the sold homes in Fairfax were 1469 homes sold. So in comparison to that peak, that...

Do have have any tips for getting it ready to show and sell? Steve Bachman: Sam, here is a short video with our thoughts on the subject. The concepts hold true for Greenbriar or anywhere else for that matter: click here to view. Clean, neat, and neutral without being crowded with too much furniture are the main keys to making a positive impression on prospective home buyers. Organizing your home for showing is different than organizing your home for living. For example... we have too much furniture in our home for selling and showing. We have pieces from my parents, grandparents ...

Wonder what homes are selling in Fairfax VA in November 2009?  It is interesting to look up the Fairfax VA real estate statistics and plot the sales for single family detached homes. Most agents will not break down the numbers, but I do!  Agents that do not understand Fairfax VA real estate statistics and the importance of the numbers try to dismiss them.  That is sad because too many persons stay uninformed and miss the big picture.  I like to inform my clients of the current trends. It has been said the most important thing in real estate is "Location, Location, Location!"  I think this set of Fairfax VA real estate statistics confirms a lot of this.  Most of the sales are either inside the Beltway or very close or accessible to it.  In this report, I used only Fairfax VA single famil...

As a very young child, I don't think many of us in the real estate profession envisioned ourselves as Realtors.  Maybe the child of a Realtor plays the I've-got-a-great-house-to-show-you game, or negotiates contracts with their dolls.  That wasn't me.  I was raised the first born of two middle class government workers.   Dad worked as a statistican for the Department of the Army and Mom was an adminstrative assistant in the Fairfax City Courthouse.  I really didn't understand either of their jobs.  So when I think back to my early childhood aspirations, it was always a teacher or nurse. As I matured into a young adult, my aspirations turned to broadcasting.  Radio broadcasting.  Forget the fact that I was shy beyond belief.  I ventured into a Speech Communication program at George Mason...

Macy's Thanksgiving Parade!  While the turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy (which is a beverage in our house) are all worth the long day in the kitchen, what I get up for on Thanksgiving Day morning is The Parade.  It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it.    I remember as a little girl my Dad took me and my brother Thomas to his office to view the parade in 1956.  My brother was probably four at the time and the subways were jammed coming and going with all the other parade attendees. Dad's office building in Manhattan looked down on the parade route.  It was a cold, windy day because Dad carried my brother and I walked behind him, holding on to his coat trying to cut our way through the crowds.   My Mom dressed us as though we were visiting the White House.  We had on our finest ou...

Fairfax VA Real Estate Market Report - October 2009 for Fairfax Virginia Real Estate. MRIS our MLS was just realeased the mosst recent data for Fairfax VA Homes sales on November 10, 2009 and it includes statistics for Fairfax Homes Sold in October 2009.  I created a trends graph from that data and compared it to same time frames in October 2005-2009.  These Fairfax VA homes sales reports are always very insightful to determine sales and marketing trends.  It deals with only homes sold in October.  This is a better way to explain what is happening in our Fairfax VA real estate market.  Instead of looking month to month, more often than not we need to take a step back and view the trends for  the same time period.  In October 2009 there were 1203 home sold in Fairfax Virginia.  Again thi...
