While eaten year around, latkes are a potato fritter that is a customary dish served during Hanukkah. Interestingly, many Jewish cooks often substitute sweet potatoes. I've found that I actually prefer the sweet potato version that I learned from our neighbor about 40 years ago. SWEET POTATO LATKES 1 pound Pealed sweet potatoes, coarsely grated similar to the thickness of hash browns 2 Scallions, finely chopped 1/3 cup All-purpose flour 2 Large eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon Kosher salt ½ teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper 3/4 cup Vegetable oil Mix potatoes, scallions, flour, eggs, salt and pepper in a bowl. Heat the oil in a non-stick skillet over moderate heat. Spoon in 2 tablespoons of potato mixtures for each latke. Flatten each with a spatula to about 4 inches around. Reduce hea...

I've just finished reading a piece by Geoff Williams that intrigues me. "Last August, (Joel Gross) hung up his shingle on the Internet and created Prayer Helpers. The product Gross's company sells: prayers. If you're down and out and want someone to pray for you, you just send $9.99, and Prayer Helpers will pray for you...," Williams writes. Apparently Gross feels that with the economy the way it is today, there are a lot of people who would like to engage a multitude of Prayer Warriers who will join them in praying for the return of their business and financial well-being. So far Gross says he's not had but a couple of paying customers, but he's decided that's probably because not many people have found his web site. There are in excess of 150,000 real estate-field professionals who ar...

You can buy an ebook for every social media site. You can take every course offered for each social media site. There are tons of social media specialists. But this article, "10 Small Business Social Media Marketing Tips" by Ross Kimbarovsky is one of the most concise and complete quick lists I have seen. He goes through what the most well known concepts and sites are and how to use them. There is a section under each one for the novice and for the advanced user. Highland park homes for sale is such a great way to get involved and meet with and interact with many influential people in Dallas.  Highland park is a community that is located within Dallas.  It is actually its own city.  Highland Park real estate is some of the most expensive dirt in Texas much less Dallas.  However, this being said, many celebrities and high powered people reside here.  There is a country club within this coommunity called DCC (Dallas country club).  There is an actual wait list for the for about 10 years just to be looked at as becoming a member.  Or you can skip to the top of the line for a small fee of only $100,000.  This does nothing more than get you to the top of the line, you will still have to pay your monthly membership fees, which no telling how much thos...

Highland Park Condos can be a very nice place to live if you are looking to live in the Upper end area of Dallas.  These condos can range from $300k - $1,000,000.  It is pretty much the aspect of being in University Park or Highland Park that is worth the money.  As these condos are within the HPISD school disctrict is another one of the main reasons they bring so much money.  Highland Park houses also demand this much value if not more.  A simple lot in highland park or university park that is within the HPISD school district can put you back about $600,000.  You may be able to find it a little bit cheaper if it is on one of the main arterys such as Lovers ln, or Mockingbird.  However, I must say that HP is definately a great place to be and is well worth it if you can afford it. If  y...

Highland park homes seems to be a comodity that everyone and there dog wants, however only so many can have.  This neighborhood is quite simply the most prestigious and expensive community in the entire Dallas area.  It rest in between preston hollow, downtown dallas, 75 and the tollway.   You can expect to buy a 2,000 sq ft home on a 50x150 lot for right around $1,000,000.  Highland Park is its own city within itself, segregated from Dallas.   HPISD is a nationally recognized public school with kids that gradutate each and every year that go into a multiple of Ivy league schools.  Highland park real estate really is a unique and amazing little neighborhood, however you must have deep pockets to own a home there.  If you do have those deep pockets though, then there is no reason for you...

The most evil thing has infected the million dollar + market of Dallas.  Commercial lenders have gotten into the act. 1.  They quote "hard money" rates if they'll even entertain a mortgage for in excess of, say, $750,000.  So we're talking about an interest rate of more than 12% in an otherwise 5.5% market.  And the loan to value requires at least a 30% cash investment by the borrower. 2.  They are forcing mansion builders to take huge discounts on their inventory, less they will see their property posted for foreclosure.  The huge discount compensates for the buyer having to finance at hard money rates. I have found a bit of loan money at reasonably conventional terms and rates, and my plan is to reserve its where abouts for my own clients. But this foolishness by lenders has got to st...

My friend, tennis champion Bob McCulley, sent this to me.  The author is unknown. Shortly after class, an economics student approached his economics professor and said, "I don't understand President Obama's stimulus bill.  Can you explain it to me?"   The professor replied, "I don't have any time to explain it at my office, but if you come over to my house on Saturday and help me with my weekend project, I'll be glad to explain it to you." The student agreed.   At the agreed-upon time, the student showed up at the professor's house. The professor stated that the weekend project involved his backyard pool.   They both went out back to the pool, and the professor handed the student a bucket.   Demonstrating with his own bucket, the professor said, "First, go over to the deep end, and fill...

DALLAS MILLION BUCK HOME SALES IN A SLUMP Many areas of the Metroplex seem to be holding fairly steady in home sales, according to Bill Cherry, principal broker of Bill Cherry, Realtors. However, Cherry says that's not true for luxury home sellers as many potential buyers seem to be taking a wait and see attitude.  That's leaving behind a two year supply. Bill Cherry says that since December 1, 2008 only 37 homes have sold for more than a million bucks.  That leaves 626 listed and looking for buyers.  The most pricey one needs a home buyer with $17 million to spare.   And then there's the noted Dallas builder who took the chance and apparently built one spec home too many.  It's been on the market for quite a while at more than $11 million with no takers.   Bill Cherry has been selling ...

I was wondering yesterday how many times over the years that a co-op agent has told me this: "Another agent has someone very interested in the property, too, and I expect their contract Saturday morning." It's a nonsense statement to begin with.  It's sole purpose is an attempt to spook me into encouraging my client to submit an offer quickly and at the highest price; to throw reason to the wind. Interestingly I don't react well in these cases.  In fact, I do just the opposite.  While I advise my client that the listing agent says someone else is interested and that the agent thinks a contract from them will be forthcoming, I do nothing more than that.  Here's why. In real estate there are too many opportunities to default to bidding against yourself.  Let me give you a couple: 1.  The ...

Gaither Homecoming gospel music singer and my friend, Janet Paschal, sent this in an email today.  She said she didn't know who wrote it.  She had inadvertently neglected to include the author's name when she jotted his thought down years ago. Nevertheless, it is exactly precisely correct, and I wanted to share it with you. Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, butrather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totallyworn out.... And those of you who know Miss Janet will be pleased to know that after her terrible bout with breast cancer a few years ago, she remains cancer free. My wife and friends call me The Dinosaur because of my taste in music.  I was brought up listening and dancing to Big Band music.  I played rhythm and blues and soft classics throughout the many years I was on the radio.  But about 1980 or so I gave up trying to add new tunes to my mental musical repertoire. When for grins I auditioned last summer to be one of the piano players at Nordstrom, Larry Petty, whose in charge of that program, asked me if I would play selections from "Phantom of the Opera" for him.  I said, no, because not only had I not rehearsed them, but I'd never played any of them in my life.  (Which is not to say I couldn't or wouldn't; it's to say I hadn't, and I didn't.)  My friend, Bob McCulley, a fine rock and roll pianist, said to me, "Rather than tell him you didn'...
