I'm proud to call Charlie & Carlos friends and if you are able to make a dinner date at El Chaparral then you too will come to know & love the Garcia family the way that I do! There are many reviews of El Chaparral but they tend to be focused on the food, & yes, the food is very good.  But I want to encourage you to make it a family favorite place because of what these people represent.  We've all heard of the American dream, to start out from nothing and make it into something.  Well, that's exactly what Charlie lead his family to do! We moved to Helotes in 1998  & the day we received our keys to our new home we asked our home builder to recommend a good Mexican restaurant - El Chaparral is pretty good, he said.  Wow!  It wasn't just good, but it was full of love & community - which j...

Helotes: Near San Antonio and Hill Country-Nice Place to Live Helotes is a small city with a land area of 4.2 square miles northwest of San Antonio.  There are areas outside the city limit proper that carry the name Helotes in the 78023 zip code. So an area much greater than the city limit itself is considered part of Helotes. Helotes is the word used for corn, or more specifically maize in Spanish. Legend has it that the area around what is now Helotes became a farming and ranching community in the late 1830s. Prior to that, indian tribes used the area for several hundreds of years. I've heard it was also a stop off point for stage coaches, and cattle drives between Bandera and San Antonio in the late 1800s. In those days, Helotes was considered a long way from San Antonio. Helotes was...

Did You Know: It's National Make a Will Month?I heard that June is National Make a Will Month. It was being promoted on radio in an ad sponsored by LegalZoom. You may see a connection here in that LegalZoom's business is to get people to use their self-help services. LegalZoom is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice.I saw this brief video from a company in England promoting the National Make a Will Month. Since United State law was based on English law, the principals are the same and if you substitue their use of the word "Crown" for government in the US, the principal idea tracks. Now with those disclaimers in place, it does make perfect sense for anyone with real property (a house, condo, plot of land or acreage) or assets to have a will. If one dies intestate, which gene...

Once a sleepy little town just northwest of San Antonio, the city of Helotes has nearly doubled its population over the past ten years, but still maintains its small town tranquility and  family-oriented activities. Centrally located in Bexar county and just off Interstate 1604. Normally less than thirty minutes to the San Antonio International Airport and downtown.     Surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, the city originally served as a stagecoach stop between San Antonio and Bandera. Settled around 1856 by Mexicans who intermarried with the Apache Indians camped in the vicinity. Helotes, which in Spanish means "green roasting ear of corn." A post office opened at Helotes in 1873, and by 1885 the community had a hotel, a school, a general store, a blacksmith, and a popul...

The Grey Forest Farmers Market has moved to Helotes, right on Bandera Road in the Methodist Church parking lot.  The location makes it much easier to reach.  Stop by on the 2nd or 4th Friday each month between 3:00 and 6:00 for fresh vegetables, fruit, grass-fed beef, eggs, pastured chicken, honey, lavender products, and much more.

This year, about half of the number of homes were sold in Helotes in comparison with last year.  Those homes have been staying on the market longer. The good news is: prices went up!  We'll see what June and July have in store for this charming small town right on the edge of the Texas Hill Country.

Recent articles in our local newspaper have seemed a little optimistic to me. I certainly don't want to discourage people from buying or selling real estate, but it's important to tell the truth about the market in San Antonio and the surrounding areas: we may be doing better than many other places around the country, but our sales are down...and it's a good time to buy! The data was obtained from ConnectMLS on 12/03/2008

Here are the sales statistics for Helotes during the third quarter from 2004 to 2008.  The number of single family residential properties sold is about the same as in 2004, but the list prices and sale prices are much higher.  The sales price to list price ratio is a bit lower too, and homes are staying on the market longer.
