Hyde Park Neighborhood | Austin, TX | History of Hyde Park | 2012   Hyde Park Historic District - rough boundaries are 38th street to the S, 51st to the N, Duval St to the E, and Guadalupe to the W.  It's north of the University of Texas and it borders the neighborhoods of Hancock and North Loop. Started in 1891, it was Austin's first planned suburb.  The suburb boasted an electric streetcar system which provided easier access to downtown Austin. It was originally promoted as an affluent residential area and the first homes in the area were grand, Queen Anne style homes. By the early 1900's, the marketing was revamped to promote Hyde Park as an affordable neighborhood for working class people.  This was reflected in smaller, modest Craftsman style houses and bungalows. 1924-1935 was the...

As Austin neighborhood groups rally to save our city pools, the folks at "Friends of Shipe Park" are having a Party, and a Rally to Save the Pool, at the same time! This Saturday, June 25th from 4-6 pm. Sponsored by the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, it's the annual summer opening party featuring live music, burgers (both meat and vegetarian), pot luck dishes, snow cones, and much more. The kids will have plenty of room to play. The park has a play scape, swings, a basket ball court, tennis courts and of course a swimming pool. Don't forget the little ones, because we have a wading pool too! Shipe Park is located at 4400 Avenue G, Austin TX 78751, in the middle of the lovely Hyde Park neighborhood. Shipe Pool will be the focal point of the festivities. Party attendees will also get...

It's been some time since I last blogged about fitness, so I'm a little rusty. I was kind of lazy during the holiday season and my waistline and fitness level show it. But here it is a new year and I've summoned the will to get back into shape. Plus, I have a new motivator: The Capital 10K held March 27 in lovely downtown Austin Texas . I began training in earnest Sunday January 30th. I kicked off my new quest by running 3 miles through Hyde Park. It was 77 degrees out and my lungs felt like they were going to explode. My legs felt great for about a mile, then they began feeling like lead. I must confess, I had to walk part of it. At the end of the run all I could think was "I'm so out of shape". I managed one other street run Wednesday and a treadmill session Saturday morning. Both wer...
