Here in BIG SOUTH FORK country, Jamestown, TN we are fortunate to have expert hoof care for our horses.  American Farrier's Association's slogan is: No Foot, No Horse is a saying for some. It's our Trademark...  You don't appreciate this statement until your favorite horse has foundered and has laminitis requiring the expert care and skills of an American Farrier Association (AFA)  Certified Journeyman Farrier.  Our farrier, Johnny Warner III, travels 50 miles one way to shoe our four and he has done this every six to seven weeks for 12 years.   His career spans thirty years.  Johnny is a Certified Journeyman Farrier and a "tester" in the AFA certification process. He has apprenticed several aspiring young farriers.    He has "put good feet" back under our horses, improving their hoove...

My Broker at Tennessee Recreational Properties, Sue Neff, and I are both trail riders here in the Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast so we keep our eyes open and ears to the ground, always receptive to opportunities for marketing horse properties to horse people. It seemed like the proverbial "Golden Opportunity" when we got some information from the Backcountry Trail Riders of North Georgia, telling us about their upcoming four-day ride at the renowned East Fork Stables, just south of Jamestown, Tennessee. With over 200 riders attending, we agreed to sponsor and staff a table in the East Fork pavilion. We brought a half-mannequin for our table and dressed him/her/it in a teeshirt silk screened with all of the ride's sponsors. We had bowls filled with free give-away items with our lo...

Visitors to the Big South Fork area in Jamestown, Tennessee always enjoy the Spring Planting Festival held each year on the last Saturday in April. There are a number of old farmsteads in the area and the history of the early settlers in this once-remote area is fascinating. The area is rugged and the soil is generally poor so, for those families, it truly was a matter of subsistence farming. They depended on their ability to raise crops, animals and gardens to feed themselves. They gathered many wild plants and hunted and fished, but the “kitchen garden” was vital to their survival. To this day, descendents of these mountain folk maintain the tradition of cultivating a large garden and providing a substantial amount of their food. Along with planning for their gardens and crops, famili...

When you're riding in Big South Fork National Park, you'll see riders wearing a variety of Western-style clothing and gear. Many riders wear chaps or chinks. Chaps and chinks are both usually made of smooth leather, or suede, and are usually seen in colors such as black, dark brown, navy, dark green, tan and cream. They can be simple, plain and utilitarian or custom made with a combinations of colors and finishes, with fringe or other decorative touches such as conchos. They are intended to protect the rider's legs from brush and are worn over one's trousers, usually jeans. They buckle on around the waist, with each leg cut from a single piece of leather that wraps completely around the rider's leg, zipping from thigh to ankle. The bottom of Western chaps is usually cut with a flare tha...

Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee is horse country and, now that spring is here, trucks and trailers are making their way to the various horse campgrounds and cabins near the national park as riders come from all over this half of the country to enjoy the best trail riding east of the Mississippi. It's not uncommon to have a loose or lost horse in a strange setting and riders are advised to invest in a small bridle tag so your horse will have his contact information handy. Go to www.terrificpet.com and order the large tag for $4.95. It comes in black so it will be unobtrusive. Spend an extra dollar and have it engraved DOUBLE SIDED. Put your horse's name as well as your name, address, home and cell phone numbers on the front and, on the back, a description of your tow...

Our memories allow us to see past the bleakness to the possibilities; memories and FAITH in the goodness of a greater presence. These and hope sustain me when times are the toughest. In 90 days the snow changes to flowers and sun. What an inspiration! Let's continue to treasure everyday and every opportunity.

If you're a churchgoer in the Big South Fork area, you can't go wrong. The major denominations are well represented, both here in Jamestown and in surrounding towns. As you'd expect, there's Southern Baptist and Freewill Baptist. There's Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Episcopal, as well as Unitarian Universalist (UU). Others include Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah's Witness and Mennonite. Some have spires, some have stained glass, some hold services in a commercial metal building. Some don't look like they could hold more than 50 people but they all have one thing in common….they are well attended, judging by the number of cars parked, in some places, every which way! More than that and, more importantly, country folks here seem to live their religion, caring for the mem...

Big South Fork, Tennessee, is horse country so you can imagine the number and types of fences here! Each type of fencing has its attributes and its drawbacks. Electrobraid, for instance, looks like bungee cord. It's inexpensive, easy to install, easy to maintain and it works beautifully, powered with a simple solar charger. The downside? It looks like bungee cord. Three-board or four-board wooden fence is attractive and it's very popular in this area. Many horse properties will have board fencing along the front of the property and something less expensive where it's less visible. The downside to wooden fencing?  Horses CHEW on it and, over time, it rots and needs to be treated with a preservative like creosote or have old boards replaced. Then there's white vinyl. It looks expensive......

At the western entrance to Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee, you'll find Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat. Tucked away at the end of a road so picturesque that you'll feel like you've driven into a postcard, you'll discover this enclave of log cabins. Cabins are privately owned but the Troxel family, the developers of Laurel Fork, operate a vacation rental management company, serving the lodging needs of the visitors to The Big South Fork area and environs. Laurel Fork, like other equestrian communities, abuts the Big South Fork National Park and, in fact, Inez and Jack Troxel and neighbor, Estel Wood, donated land for the creation of the new Troxel-Wood Trailhead. Diagonally across the road is the Yellowcliff Trail into Big South Fork. That trail tees onto Fork Ridge Road...

The moon was setting in the early morning.  I was out at 6:30am and saw this beautiful sight. Two of our horses were grazing contently as the huge full moon slowly sank in the western sky.  Hoping to catch another and even better shot, I was up again today to see the moon setting.  No, it was not to be.  The moon was not as full, the horses had not come down to this part of the pasture and the sun was in a more cloudy, but beautiful redish orange sunrise in the east.  Reminds me of REAL ESTATE - sometimes you only get ONE SHOT, ONE OPPORTUNITY with a buyer and when it's gone, it's gone.  I was also reminded of the early TV show - The Kate Smith Show and Kate singing "When The Moon Comes Over The Mountain." Here's a link to that video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onK4RAhKnQ0 That was ...

Big South Fork, Tennessee, is a destination for trail riders and many who have come to ride in the Big South Fork National Park have come to stay. Several equestrian communities have been developed now near Big South Fork. Ten years ago, people who wanted to come here for the riding bought parcels of land in Spruce Creek Acres, the oldest of these equestrian communities, and began to build cabarns (cabin/barn combination) or small cabins. Each one is different and most are tucked into the trees, so it has a very rural look and feel. Deeded trails wind throughout and connect directly to the Cumberland Trailhead, a major gateway into the Big South Fork. Spruce Creek is growing exponentially as those who bought lots years ago are now retiring and moving to this area. Those lots are being c...

We love maps and often identify an unusual feature on the topo as our goal for the day. One day we targeted a huge feature in the middle of Laurel Fork in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area near Jamestown, TN.  The only way to get there was to bicycle down Darrow Ridge, stash the bikes and bushwhack cross country. . Once we made it down the steep slope to the stream, we found no way to traverse upstream because the vegetation was so thick.  So we said, heck, it's easier to just walk up the stream. After a ¼ mile of this we reached our goal.   It was well worth it. The formation had a huge square of rock protruding from the top.  My husband dubbed the feature TOPHAT.  Satisfied with the day's effort, we trudged back through the water, scrambled back up the steep slope ...

These big plastic fleas and ticks are hanging above the reception desk at Dogwood Animal Hospital in Jamestown, Tennessee, a vivid reminder that spring is here and it's time to start thinking about protection for pets. Veterinarian Cindy Johnson has a very busy full-service practice, with a constant stream of cats and dogs coming to the office. She also tends to large animals, making the occasional farm call although, with such a large equine population in the equestrian communities near Big South Fork National Park, many local horse owners, myself included, trailer their horses into town for routine matters like annual vaccinations. Vet Tech, Gene Hull, has a way with horses and nobody gets nasal vaccine up a horse's nostrils faster than he does! "Dr. Cindy" herself grew up in Jamestow...

I keep writing about how the Big South Fork is rugged country and trail riders in the backcountry need to be prepared for any eventuality. I personally have never had a problem but I try to think of what emergencies might occur and to be prepared to deal with them. Cell coverage is iffy-so you can't count on being able to use your BlackBerry. I carry a small device called "SPOT" that performs several functions and can be relied upon because it uses satellite communication. It's the first and only satellite messenger. The SOS/911 function would be used in the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your GPS location and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies, contacting 911...

Yesterday was a glorious early spring day here at the Big South Fork in Jamestown, Tennessee so I packed a lunch and set off with a riding buddy to explore a trail that we had not been on before. We had a good map and the Ridge Top trail is well marked, so where did we go wrong? We obviously missed a turn because the horses had to clamber up a VERY steep hill, stopping every few steps to rest. I saw a sign on a tree at the top of the hill and since we were obviously lost, I expected it to provide some information as to where we might be, or where we might be going. We were speechless for a few seconds and then we started to laugh. I don't know whether you say, "Oh, #?!T" when you're contemplating the descent, or when you've succeeded in ascending! Clearly, we weren't the first! For inf...

But it's going to be, very soon! Anyone interested in buying property or in building doesn't have much time left to see "the lay of the land." Trees are barely budding but, in a month, when the leaves have unfurled, it will be too late to get a good sense of the topography or to site buildings. People tend to think of winter as a period of hibernation but it's actually the best time to look at land. There's rarely more than a dusting of snow, or a few inches at most. Winter's over, though, and it's early spring in middle Tennessee. Tennessee generally enjoys a long spring season but by the end of April, the woods will be in full foliage. Buyers thinking of making a trip here to look at land should not delay! For information about Big South Fork real estate or horse properties in Jamesto...

The Big South Fork area in Jamestown, Tennessee is horse country, all right. And with horses comes….as every horseman knows….repairs to leather tack! But WHERE do you take your tack and equipment when it needs to be repaired? Not to worry. You take it to Jay Beauman in Muddy Pond. Jay certainly knows his trade; he is a third generation leather worker. He's 27 now and has been working in his father's shop since he was 15. The Muddy Pond Mennonite community is known for its sorghum mill, for the sheds, gazebos and porch furniture produced by its wood workers and for its leather shops. Jay's business thrives through word of mouth. He has never had to advertise and he will never have to, as his reputation grows. Many of his customers are from out of state, bringing their repairs when they co...
