Update on the Loggerhead Turtles--The 5AM Beach Patrols on Hilton Head Island

Thanks to an incredible group of volunteers, it looks like it may be a good season for Loggerhead Nesting here on Hilton Head Island. During nesting season, each morning at 5 AM, the Sea Turtle Patrol checks the entire length of Hilton Head's beaches (12 miles in all) for turtle tracks that lead to nests that may need to be protected. If the nests are situated too close to the high tide line, the volunteers will relocate and mark the nests. So far this year, 96 nests have been identified and the season has just started! But did you know the biggest challenge to the survival of the Loggerhead turtle survival is LIGHTS ON THE BEACH?
