The Rotary Foundation held the Presidential Gala to welcome Rotary International President Dong Kurn (D.K.)Lee to the Lowcountry last night. He spoke about the Polio Eradication Program and how polio has successfully been eradicated from all but 4 countries through the efforts of Rotary. New Major Donors and new Bequest Society members were recognized and introduced to D.K. The Beaufort County Planning Commission voted Monday against increased regulation of tree removal on private property, saying only some live oaks should be protected. The commission's six members unanimously voted to send a tree ordinance to the Beaufort County Council, but they recommended stripping language that protects anything other than live oaks with a diameter of 18 inches or more. The current tree ordinance has come under fire because owners of homes built since 1999 have to get a permit to remove any tree, while owners of homes built before 1999 only need a permit to remove a live oak 12 inches or more in diameter. The Town of Hilton Head Island Comprehensive Plan is having a Neighborhood Meeting Series througout January 2009. I attended the first one and encourage all islanders and interested visitors to participate. The Town's current plan was adopted in 2004 and it is time for an update. Because much of the Island has been developed, the island is transitioning from a growing community to one of relative maturity. This is a key consideration in teh update of the plan. The update plan is a collaborative effort between the community and its leaders to from a vision for the future of the Town of Hilton Head Island over the next 20 years.
