French Huguenot Church - Charleston, SC - Speechless Sunday The first group of French Huguenot's arrived in Charleston around 1681 and organized the first French Huguenot congregation.  The first French Huguenot Church was constructed around 1687.  The present day French Huguenot is of Gothic Revival style and was built in 1845.  In the early days of Charleston history, church services were scheduled around the tide.  The "planters", who lived up river on the Ashley River or the Cooper River, would arrive on ebb tide and return on flood tide.  Image that. French Huguenot Church is located at 136 Church St., Charleston, SC FREE things to do in Charleston, SC Oh, by the way, I sell Charleston real estate, too.   French Huguenot Church, Charleston, SC - Speechless Sunday

A mural in Charleston, SC - The Lowcountry The mural above reflects life in Charleston, SC is often referred to as "The Lowcountry".  It took a few years of living here to really appreciate the term and to realize that when you are downtown Charleston, you are actually sea level, and on a pensinula.  The meaning of "lowcountry" is a dimension of Charleston that is reflected all around.  The mural above displays marsh lands and tidal creeks, which provide an abundance of fresh air, bird watching, fishing, shrimping...and countless other outdoor activities. Pictured in the mural above, we see a shrimper weaving his cast net, and the basket ladies weaving their basket from marsh reeds, and the coastal birds perched in the marsh.   A mural in Charleston, SC - Avondale Point FREE things to d...

Today I was looking over some old blog posts that I wrote two years ago.  This one jumped out as me and is still relevant today! As most everyone knows, today's real estate market is a buyer's market. This means that the number of homes for sale in a given area outweigh the number of ready, able, and willing buyers in that same market. Although we've been in a buyer's market for quite some time many sellers have yet to adjust their mindset and expectations to reflect this change in the market. These same people are upset when after 6 months their home is still on the market. Below is a list of ten reasons why I find homes do not sell along with possible remedies to these problems. These are in no way in any sort of order, although depending on the property and situation some have more ...

House Selling Tips - Charleston House Buyers: When you are under the stress of foreclosure, you are in no position to get caught up in a scam that could make your situation worse instead of better. There are many legitimate home buyers out there, but the sad truth is that there are also many who have decided that there is money to be made scamming vulnerable homeowners. Whatever your reason for wanting to sell your house fast you need to be aware of a few signs that indicate a potentially less than honest buyer. The equity grabber is one who will have you sign over the deed to the home if you have it, and then you’ll make the payments to him instead of the mortgage company. This attracts many homeowners faced with losing their homes because they believe they still get to live in their h...

Charleston, SC Housing Report Tri-County MLS Residential Market Below is the third quarter metro Charleston SC housing report. All statistics gathered for this report are as of the last day of September.  The report covers the major counties of Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley that make up the metro Charleston SC area.  As you can see from the report the largest inventory category of active listings in the area is under $150,000.  This category of homes under $150,000 also makes up the largest percentage of homes sold (closed) this year. From this report we can deduce a couple of things that indicate that our housing market is heading in the right direction.  First, our active inventory is shrinking in all but the $150,000 category when compared to this time in 2009.  This is key wh...

A couple of week's ago I was contacted by one of the agents we regularly stage for.  Her company, Carolina One Real Estate, had organized a Basket Brigade for those in need during Thanksgiving in the Greater Charleston Area.  I had first heard of Basket Brigade's listening to Self-help guru Anthony Robbins tell his tale about a Thanksgiving when his family was in need and someone had donated.  He then organized and donated baskets of food to the needy every year after that and encouraged his listeners to contact his organization to recreate it in our areas.  I admit that I never had contacted his company but had never forgotten about it.  When I was contacted my response was immediate - we were going to become involved in this charitable effort.  Thanksgiving is an important part of my ...

Labyrinth - Meditation Garden at Roper St. Francis in Charleston, SC  A comforting place has been discovered in Charleston, SC.  A recent trip to Roper St. Francis Hospital in the West Ashley area of Charleston led me to discover another hidden jewel of Charleston.   The Labyrinth - Meditation Garden is quite and secluded, yet in the mist of a major intersection, and is situated between Roper St. Francis hospital and Roper St. Francis Cancer Center.  The Labyrinth- Meditation garden is stunningly appointed with symbolism throughout.  The garden consists of: The Grand Portal, The Prayer Garden, The Camellia Garden, The Labyrinth, and The Christ Statue Garden. The design of the Labyrinth and Meditation garden represents symmetry, proportion and harmony creating beauty.  The plant material...

The Coburg Cow at Halloween - Charleston, SC Just ask anyone living in the West Ashley area of Charleston, SC about the The Coburg Cow !! She is one of Charleston's most popular characters and definately a famous landmark.   She has been around since late 1920's and known to survive several storms:  Hurricane Hugo (1989), The Citadel Cadets trying to ride her (1992), and City of Charleston Board of Zoning (2001). She was taken to shelter before Hugo struck, she was restored after the run-in with the Citadel Cadets, and she has been granted a zoning variance by the City of Charleston.   Located at 901 Savannah Highway, we at AgentOwned Realty are proud to have her as our across-the-street neighbor. Today, she is sporting  her Halloween attire. Trick or Treat from the Coburg Cow ! Charles...
