The covered bridges of Lancaster County PA have suffered because of the hurricane floods of 2011. However, I discovered Keller’s Mill Covered Bridge had been reconstructed not far from my home on Middle Creek Road and it was undamaged. When we moved to Lancaster County in 1997, Middle Creek Road was closed and remained so until late 2010 or early 2011. For some reason I remained oblivious to the fact that the road had been reopened. Keller’s Mill Covered Bridge originally stood on Rettew Road, but with increased traffic the bridge needed to be upgraded. The bridge was carefully dismantled in 2006 and reconstructed on Middle Creek Road in 2010. This bridge is painted white and as such is the only one in Lancaster County this color. Originally constructed in 1873 by Elias McMellan and th...

In Ephrata, PA, B & E Notary has three locations. Two in Ephrata, PA and one in Brownstown, PA. The picture to the left is the Brownstown location. B & E is an authorized online agent for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation or PennDot. We were selling a car and I used my Power of Attorney to sign the title, so the buyer was able to officially purchase the car. I was quite pleased with the service I received at B & E Notary. Tiffany, who is the night manager, served us very well. She was efficient, friendly, professional and speedy. I highly recommend B & E Notary, especially if you are selling a car. A big, hearty thank-you to Tiffany and to the owners of B & E Notary.

During a recent visit to the Ephrata Cloister in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I learned that German immigrant Conrad Beissel emigrated to this area in 1732, joining other German, Swiss, Dutch, and French Protestants escaping religious persecution in their homelands.  Our tour guide, Michael, explained that the two main issues for Beissel were that Saturday was the main day for worship, and celibacy was necessary in pursuit of heavenly goals. By 1750, the community numbered nearly 80, plus families who, while not celibate, sympathized and lived on nearby farms which supplied earthly needs which the Brothers and Sisters needed to supplement those produced in the colony itself. The building above, with its low doorway, was the Sisters' House, and on each of the 3 floors, the...

The ninetieth Ephrata PA Fair is now history.  The weather threatened to rain on several days' worth of events, but in the final analysis, everything turned out all right.                 The younger children were excited to ride on an old fashioned merry-go round!                      Forget healthy eating!  County and state fair season only comes once a year!                                              Neon from the rides lights up the night. Friday night we were treated to a trip down memory lane.  Flamin' Dick and the Hot Rods rocked the town with Rock & Roll hits from the '50s and '60s. ©BrianSchulman2008

Ephrata Cloister, Ephrata PA Nestled close to the intersection of Routes 272 and 322 lies an ancient compound that predates the modern roads by centuries...   The Ephrata Cloister was a Seventh Day Baptist community established by devout German settlers in 1732.                              The Ephrata Cloister is now a museum run by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The community was run by "brothers" and "sisters".  Today, "brothers" and "sisters" can be seen in period costumes as guides, and in activities that would have been typical of life 250 years ago. Conrad Beissel, the founder of Ephrata, was born in 1691.  Having experienced a religious awakening, he had established a following in Germany.  His sect came into conflict with the state sponsored Protestant relig...

Historic Smithton Inn, Ephrata, PA At 900 West Main Street, Ephrata, PA, not far from the Ephrata Cloister, stands an inn which has been in business for 237 years!  The Historic Smithton Inn, a beautiful estate of multicolored stone, was originally built in 1763. Innkeeper Dorothy Graybill was born only a mile away from the Inn.  The rooms are furnished with antiques and hand crafted furniture.  Each room has an operating fireplace, which is in use from November through April.  The rooms can be candle lit, and are decorated with Pennsylvania Dutch quilts and stencils. The Historic Smithton Inn was built by members of the Ephrata Cloister, a Seventh Day Baptist community with surviving buildings erected between 1735 and 1749.  The Inn is constructed with hand-cut timbers, held together b...

Ephrata Borough is located in the northeastern section of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  The Borough is the outgrowth of the famed religious community, the Cloisters, founded in the early 1700's by the German mystic Conrad Beissel.  When the Cloister community declined in the early 1800's, the village grew as a regional center of commerce.  During this time of growth, two resort hotels were built, the Mountain Springs and the Mount Vernon House.  The village also became known as a key stop for the Reading and Columbia Railroads. This rapidly growing village was incorporated on August 22, 1891.  The population at the time was about 2,200 people.  Six newly elected councilmen organized this new enterprise called Ephrata Borough with a Council/Mayor form of government. Ephrata's many h...
