I have to admit I am enjoying all the talk and attention being given to Delaware County PA as a result of the HBO series Mare of Easttown. From interviews with Kate Winslet, to articles online, my county has gained some recognition because of how we locals talk! It is interesting to me to listen to linguistics on the radio explain how certain sounds come out of certain areas and why, and fun to hear non locals try to say and capture the feel of this area, like SNL’s Murdur Durdur. The Delaware County sound also extends into Philadelphia and into Montgomery County PA where I grew up. The first time my accent was fully pointed out to me was during a conference I attended in college, I was in South Carolina at a textile mill. I was saddened to hear about the fire in Brookhaven this past weekend that destroyed three businesses in a small strip mall on Edgmont Ave. According to local news, it apparently started in the kitchen of Cocco's Pizza Shop in the early hours on Saturday.  The firehouse was right next door but still it was too late to get the fire under control once the fire crew got there.  It quickly engulfed Cocco's, Rose's Nail salon and the Liberty Tax business in the mini strip mall.The Liberty Tax business, gosh must have paperwork for many people who are working on their taxes, since tax season is upon us.All three business have been under hard times because of the pandemic, now this.It is never good to hear of such destruction, but good that no one was hurt or killed.I wish all impacted by this... 03/16/2021

Now that is a name that says a lot about a bird.In all the years I have been feeding birds and watching birds, I had never encountered a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, until a week ago.It was after our last snow event that I noticed a bird hanging out on the trunks of the three walnut trees in our backyard.Initially I thought it was a downy woodpecker, but it was larger. Then I thought well it must be a harrier woodpecker or a red bellied woodpecker, but the coloring on its body was different and it had a solid large red band across the top of its head, not the red smaller spot that is on top of a male Downy/Harrier's head.Taking out my binoculars and then consulting a few bird websites on line, I realized it is a female yellow bellied sapsucker.
