Living in the suburbs can sometimes make you feel invisible, but village life reveals that just because it is part of a suburb does not mean people are not caring. Berwyn, PA, sits astride the Main Line to the west and north of the city of Philadelphia in Chester County. Part of the Tredyffrin Easttown School district it is part of two townships, Tredyffrin and Easttown. The village sits on Route 30 between Devon and Paoli.  There have been a rash of events recently that make me realize this is a wonderfully strong community, with lots of community  support. Over the holidays we saw hundreds of families turn out for the holiday tree lighting and the arrival of Santa at Berwyn Train station, sponsored by the Easttown Veterans Association and the Berwyn Devon Business and Professional Ass...

One of the things about living and working in a village is that it is always evolving, and Berwyn, Pennsylvania is no different. Straddling two townships, Easttown and Tredyffrin it is a beautiful place. From when you step off the train having travelled along the famed "Main Line" you can't fail but notice the friendliness of the surroundings. But don't take my word for it, watch the video and then take some time to come visit.

I was driving by the T/E middle school yesterday and heard on the news we may be getting snow this weekend and right then I see the hope of Spring. Fluttering in the brisk  winds and as I pulled down into my collar I see Registration is now Open for Spring Baseball. www.BPALL.org, I am sure there are other leagues in the area also open for registration as well. But with the threats of snow it is good to know that Berwyn Paoli Little League is ready and set to go in the Spring makes the winter seem just a little bit shorter knowing we have the fun and sounds of summer right around the corner, I can feel the sun on my arms and feel just a little bit better. I can hear the crack of ball on bat and the cheers of the crowd. So sign up now, don't wait get over to www.BPALL.org and have a grea...

Yesterday I had the chance to eat at two good restaurants on the Main Line, one is a BYOB in Berwyn, being my birthday and my brother being in town he treated me to lunch at Tiramisu, located on the corner of Lancaster Ave and Knox it has quickly become a local favorite with seating hard to come by in the evenings. I know because we have tried to get in recently and been unable to find space. The kitchen is based on Jewish Roman cooking, I say based as it is not a Kosher kitchen with lobster and other shellfish on the menu. We had an interesting lunch, I had a Tuscan bean soup followed by a risotto primavera, the soup was great, the risotto a little salty and oily for my taste, my brother had grilled artichokes followed by a fish stew both of which he said were excellent. The stew was n...

It was cold this morning, down in the 30's but this flower a late blooming canna lilly just amazed me.  I have posted shots of these plants before, note the red tinge to the flower opening behind, we seem to be getting red and yellow mixed flowers of this hybrid bulb.

New windows a whole different look! We just had some of our older windows replaced by WindowsPlus from Media, they use a vinyl replacement window by Okna. It was a simple process and went much faster than I thought it would, here are some photos that show the before and after and the process. Actually this is a really old photo and we had just replaced the large picture window a little while ago and added some shutters, split levels are hard to give good curb appeal, we have worked hard on the garden and that has improved a lot but these old windows were a pain, never opening well, or closing either.   We replaced the casements with double hung with grids on the front, a much nicer look and easier to have open even when it is raining lightly. Here they had two old windows out, they were...

The Canada Geese are back, out walking this morning, I snapped this photo...with the mist across the field and the geese feeding it made me realize Fall is here. One of the joys of living on the Main Line is we are surrounded by parks and open spaces allowing nature to live around us, deer, foxes, raccoons, groundhog, squirrels, all sorts of different birds sometimes they can be annoying, the deer especially, but it doers allow you to stop and enjoy nature right in your own back yard, sometimes literally.

We often resist change, fighting to maintain what we know and are comfortable with so that we can remain that way. Sometimes change happens quickly, sometimes slowly. I think when it is slower we can adapt and accept it better, but when it happens fast or we feel it is forced upon us we resent it and fight against it. Nature has some of its own changes, think of butterflies, I read a quote yesterday that there is nothing in a caterpillar that leads us to think of or see a butterfly. I posted this photo on Wednedsay of a canna lilly in our front yard, I thought it was beautiful then... Today as I walked out, it had changed, it was more open and in my eyes more beautiful still...see change can be good I love the two tone color scheme, seen it several time this year with other lilles as we...

Onme of the issues for many gardeners is getting the mix right throughout the year of flowering plants. Perennials are great, but they often bloom and then leave you with a bed of greenery and nothing else. Annuals help out adding color, but sometimes it is just a mater of doing some research and mixing what you plant to flower at different times. Harder said than done but one of the flowers we have admired over the past few years when our yard is looking kind of drab was "Canna Lillies". This one is just beginning to flower, as you can see the leaves add their own color to the picture, but the blooms are terrific. I of course take no credit for this, it is all Trudy's work, other than to say I kept reminding her to plant some of those canna lillies this year.

I was picking up one of my sons last night, the air was perfect, the silence as I waited calming...there is just something about train stations...the beginning and end of so many journeys... Notice the flapping flag in the wind, top right of the photo, the Veterans Memorial, this is the westbound platform. Eastbound platform and station building, now houses a music school and art studio. You can hear the rails singing, twanging and sounding before the train ever appears..just makes you want to climb aboard and take a journey.

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about how the old Berwyn School which became the T/E School Administration building has been demolished. Was at Easttown Library today and noticed that the fences have been taken down and made me realize that the properties on First Avenue opposite the old building, just got a big boost in value. Instead of a darkand dirty building, they now have this great view of the playing fields and when all that grass eventually comes in and greens up a bit it will be a fabulous view of Open Space.

Easttown Library sits in the heart of Berwyn. It is a happening place for people of all ages, always busy and the staff all seem happy to be working and willing to help you if you have a problem. Part of the Chester County Library System they are a great addition to the area. But this library is more than just a place for books, there are movies, clubs meeting, rock concerts in the courtyard all sorts of events and things to do. Speaking of the courtyard, even though it is hot in summer, you can sit quietly and enjoy the flowers and the serenity of the courtyard. Check out these photos: And if you get just too hot, you can always head down to Handels for an ice cream...I like the Pistachio personally.

What is happening in Berwyn? Berwyn PA that is. Situated in Easttown Township there has been a lot of earth moving and demolition in the heart of the village. The old Berwyn School that became the Tredyffrin Easttown School District Offices has been demolished and there is now a grassy area sitting next to the Easttown library overlooking the playing fields. Quite a change, opens the space up. Whilst the school district tore thier building down, across the park a developer has built two new homes, one has sold, but what great views they have. You can see them in this photo here, the one just out of the picture is under contract but this one is still available.

A hot evening, even if it was Memorial Day, the lines were long and deep at Handels in Berwyn. Great ice cream, a great following, it does not seem to matter what the weather is, even on cold wintry days there can be a line. Age does not matter, young or old you will love this ice cream or sherbert or yogurt, there is something for everyone. Their chocolate flavors are always worth trying. People were rushiong to get in line as the lighhts go off to signal closing time, but the staff just kept welcoming people and asking them what they wanted. Just grab your choice and sit and watch the people, lots of fun. Another great reason to live in Berwyn.

Fabulous white peony, smell is gorgeous, very sweet like honey, intoxicatingly so. Pink peony, these are so heavy they continually flop over, also have no smell like the white one above, but gorgeous to look at.

Like yard sales, take your pick among all the other great things to do in and around Berwyn PA this weekend. All week everywhere I have been, in almost every development there are yard sale posters and signs. If you are looking for a bargain or a possible find you can show on Antiques Roadshow this is the weekend to go browsing among the collectibles and treasures in everybody's yard. We love yard sales, you can approach them with specific things that you are looking for or just go on a whim, but they are fascinating from the objects to the people, both those selling and buying or hoping to buy. You wander up and look at a few prices and you can immediately tell if these people really want to clear their basement and garage or just are testing the market. Are they too attached to their ...

I think my favorite flower is the peony, but at this time of year before the peonies start blooming, I am always amazed at the variety of colors you can see on the irises in our neighborhood. Check out these examples and send me some of the ones from your neighborhood: Bright yellow iris This is a dark purple almost brown This is a more typical color, the pale lavender/blue This looks purple and white, but it is actually a pale blue color, this and the yellow are probably my favorites This is a true white color, also beautiful. What other colors have you seen? Burgundy red maybe?
