Are you trying to save money by using the toilet bowl cleaner to also clean the bathroom sink? Many toilet bowl cleaners are highly corrosive. Over time, the cleaner will eat away at the chrome on your metal sink stopper. It is likely also doing damage to the other metal in the sink and taps. Look for the bony hand sign on the bottle that indicated that the contents are highly corrosive. The contents are usually some solution of hydrochloric acid. Not all cleaners have it so check the bowl cleaner and a) replace the cleaner with a more environmentally and metal friendly cleaner OR b) put the cleaner away so that it is used only for the toilet bowl.
