Imagine you're viewing a potential new home. You walk in the front door and are instantly impressed. You explore the property room by room and like what you see.    Then there's something you notice that's not quite right. An odour. You realize that it's likely cat dander and, now that you've identified it, you smell it everywhere. Suddenly the home doesn't seem as attractive as it did just moments earlier.    The owner of the property is probably so used to the smell that he doesn't even notice it. Neither does anyone else in the household.    So, when marketing your home for sale, be scent sensitive. Think about the odours that you may have become used to but others are likely to notice. Even odours you think are pleasant, like the strong scent given off by some house plants, may no...

Selling your home doesn't have to be overwhelming       When some people think about selling their home, they imagine all the things they will have to do: paint the kitchen, clean closets, prepare for viewings, find another home, arrange financing, start packing, etc. It can all seem very overwhelming very quickly.   In fact, the long to-do list you imagine you’ll have to deal with may dissuade you from making a move!   It doesn't have to be that way.   There are many ways to make selling your home and buying another relatively simple and easy.   Sure, there will be some work to do. You may need to prepare your property so that it looks appealing to potential buyers – cleaning, decluttering, doing some repairs, etc. Of course, you will also need to view some properties for sale in ord...

If you have young children, or expect a visit from friends or relatives with little ones in tow, it pays to ensure your home is free of hazards. The last thing you want is an injury that could have easily been prevented.    Here are some basic childproofing tips.    Remove everything that is toxic, hot or sharp, from within reach of a child. (For example, the leaves of some types of house plants are toxic.) If possible, keep children out of the kitchen while cooking. Install plug-in covers in electrical outlets. (These are inexpensive and can be purchased at any hardware store.) Block or gate off areas where kids may fall. Remove "pulling down" hazards, such as a heavy plant that a child can pull off a table. Make sure there are screens on all open windows. Finally, watch your pets. E...

Buyers look for every indication that a prospective home has value.  One indicator is bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures.  People love fancy taps. special heating racks for towels, whirlpool and jetted tubs, showers with multiple shower heats and jets.  What about toilets? Have you heard of Toto plumbing fixtures?  Are you selling in an up market and want your bathroom to stand out among the competition?  Look for the Japanese bathroom fixture brand Toto.   We have all heard how the Japanese have got plumbing done the right way.  Well, the Toto toile is an example of this.   They are enormously popular in high end homes and motels. It may be a case of "Snob-ism" but A Toto may give you a Royal Flush   Photo credit:  TOTO Toilet

I have lived in a city my whole life.  The concept of wood fire for winter heating is just foreign to me.  Still, my railroader father had a number of expressions that would make you thing we lived on a farm and that all kinds of bad things would happen.  He used to say things like - "Take you out to the back 40"  (meaning something like take you out to an undeveloped area where things could happen and no one would know - like shooting the dog (which we did not own and did not have a gun).  Going to get spanked behind the woodpile was another threat.  We did not have a fireplace let alone a wood pile.  Imagine how damaging that would be when you live in a city.  You will never have an affinity to rural areas.  Still, I have lived my whole life so far without facing the danger of the wo...

If your friend or family member is buying a first home, here is a housewarming gift that is useful and humorous.  Buy a small tool box.  Get the latest Yellow Pages and add a pre-paid cell phone.  Put the Yellow Pages and the cell phone in the tool box and tie a ribbon around the box.  Voila.  Instant Tool Kit   It is funny but also useful as everyone can use a telephone and eventually start to fill the tool box with tools.  Have some fun giving a gift but remember not to clutter the new home with stuff that has no purpose. I remember buying my first home. The papers were signed and there we were...home owners. I didn't sleep a wink that night. Now I couldn't just call a landlord to take care of the mainetenance or any problems that would arise. We were now the almighty landlords, so it was all on our shoulders. But once I wrapped my head around a good cup of tea the next morning and thought about all the pluses of owning a home—the freedom to change it as per your own style; pride of ownership; ability to sell and make a good return on investment—then, I realized the decision was the best decision I could've made!

Ontario Family Day is one of the most recent additions to our calendars and is certainly a holiday to look forward to! Family Day was established to celebrate the importance of not only your immediate family, but to celebrate the community you live in as part of your extended family. This is a day where neighbours can come together, join in some fun winter activities, and embrace all that the city has to offer. Lucky for Orleans, local fun is always abundant and Ontario Family Day is no exception! While planning your long weekend activities save some time on Monday, February 15th for you and your family to join local MPP, Phil McNeely, for a community skate at the Ray Friel Centre! Come skating from 1 to 3pm and when you come off the ice warm up with some hot chocolate and cookies on th...

Because this is the end of the year and did not have a chance to blog about it before i'm taking the opportunity to do so now. Hello, I have been teaching home staging classes for aspiring full time or part time home stagers since early 2008 in Quebec and in Europe.  I get to meet wonderful people who are looking for a new challenge and they are very motivated and excited by the end of the 3 day course.  I try to keep in touch to follow their progress in the home staging business.  Not all of them continue and persevere long enough to make it happen and that's normal.  I tell the prospective students that Home Staging is a growing field but we have to work very very hard and learn to be patient and not to give up if we REALLY want it to succeed!  Over time we develop notoriety and business network which will propel our business forward, but it does take time. I see a growing demand for courses - in the last yea...

Saturday was a beautiful day here in Ottawa. I took advantage of the nice weather to go out to the Parc de la Gatineau on de Quebec side with my love. I have posted a couple of pictures below of my day. If you haven't yet visited the park make sure to put it on your list for this October the trees are changing colors and it makes for a great time to take pictures of the Outaouais' beautiful scenery. Don't miss it. If you are coming in from out of town visit the Parc de la Gatineau website for more information including maps and directions. PS: There was even a few enjoying picnics with their family so feel free to bring your food and enjoying the great outdoors (weather permitting). The trails are also great for those who have a dog. Another reason why Ottawa (Canada's National Capital)...
