With it being so damp and cold up here this week we decided to give the grill and rest and have some warm comfort food. We don't have Pasta very often anymore but boy oh boy was this sauce tasty (and easy to prepare!)   We chose to have ours over Fettuccine and it went down a treat. Let me know if you try it! Ingredients 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 3 large garlic cloves, chopped 1 16-ounce can diced tomatoes 2 teaspoons dried basil, crumbled 2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled 1 14 ounce jar of marinated artichoke hearts 12 ounces Fettuccine, freshly cooked (I like fresh pasta but boxed will do too) 1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan cheese Fresh Basil to crumble on top Preparation Heat olive oil in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté until ...

Yes, it is real and YES it is STILL up!!   I know so many of you have yours down on the 26th Dec but ours is a little tricky to get out because it is usually +12 feet high and there is only one door that it can get out without becoming a lumber jack in the living room.  We close that door up and seal it for the winter after the tree comes in and with Spring being so late this year, we've not yet opened it up!We love to decorate our tree for Valentine's Day, then St Patrick's Day and then Easter.  The egg decorations have all been put away and the only thing still up is the lights (which are kind of pretty still)I think tomorrow is the final day for this tree.  We'll put it outside for the squirrels and birds to play in for awhile and then it can become mulch of some sort. How many of you...

By the time you read this my points number will have changed but I just felt the need to capture the moment! I notice numbers a lot.  The clock at 11:11 or 12:12 etc forever jumps out at me.  I often wonder what we noticed prior to digital clocks? Did you know that if you multiply 1111 x 1111 you get 1234321  ?   Your day is now complete!  LOL I used to be fantastic at remembering phone numbers but now, not so much.  Everything is programed and the numbers hidden. One cool thing I don't have to remember is . . .  The Shamrock Shake is back!!   I wrote this post back in 2011 and thought it important to share with you again: ******************************************************************************************* We're quickly approaching St Patrick's Day and it seems everyone wants t...

When March comes in like a Lion, it is said that it will leave like a Lamb. Today in Kingston and the 1000 Islands, the temperature is a bit more mild than it has been but it is snowing!  Snowing enough to say March 1st has come in like a Lion. I believe I speak for many when I say, bring on the Lambs!!! We surrender!

We have an apartment in our home for my 86 year old Mother.  Her kitchen window faces our back door and we had a system in place to let us know she was ok each morning.  She would wave to us or put her light on when she would get up.  We would then know that all was well. Now, she's so little she can't see over the snow that separates us!   We pop in these days and share a cup of coffee together and count the days until we can enjoy the same out on the deck :) If you're experiencing snow and ice in your area, please make a point of checking on any of your elderly or infirm neighbours - a quick Good Morning won't hurt anyone and you could make someone's day, if not save a life.

So many Buyers concentrate only on "Sticker Price" when purchasing a new home.  I hear horror stories from Buyers who previously had never considered what it would cost them to LIVE in the home. I like to help Buyers to understand that sometimes, when house shopping, they're comparing the things that really are not that important in the general scheme of things:  paint colours or other decor, counter tops, light fixtures, appliances . . .  things that are easily changed and not that expensive.  Things they want to learn to look past like staging which is smoke and mirrors to get the Seller a higher price.  What I like them to compare is running cost$   How much $$$ can they save on month-to-month expenses that will allow them to use that same savings to pay down the mortgage each year. ...

As mentioned in an earlier post, the Kingston and Area Real Estate Board had approx 11 months inventory on the books.  Below you will find a 3 year comparison as to what we have available, what has expired and what has sold. As you can see, we've had more sales this year than last year and at a higher volume too.  Not all have closed as yet. This is good news for both Buyers and Sellers.  There is enough to let everyone enjoy the market. If you're thinking of Selling, we have Buyers. If you're a Buyer, we have homes available too. Give Susan Emo a call if you're interested in the Kingston and 1000 Islands area!

This is one of those days where you don't have to wonder what's for dinner . . . It's PANCAKES PANCAKES PANCAKES "Known formally as “Shrove Tuesday,” Pancake Day has historically been a time to load up on carbs before the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter and is particularly popular in the U.K. The day celebrated by excessive pancake devouring, it is also observed in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Poland and Sweden." I'm not sure why the US doesn't share in this    (anyone?)  "The circular breakfast staple, whose origins date back to the 15th century A.D., symbolized the sun, conjuring feelings of warm weather and marking the beginning of spring. (ha ha)The ingredients involved in pancake making represented four pillars of the Christian faith – eggs for creation, flour as the...

(sorry, couldn't resist the title!)      Today is National Flag Day and is also the 50th Birthday of our Canadian Flag.   I learned many things about it that I never knew before today. One thing I learned is that our flag's designer, George Stanley, modeled it after the flag of our local Kingston Royal Military College's (RMC) flag.  RMC's flag contained the school's coat of arms on a white square in between two red bars. This design inspired Stanley, who was a professor at the school.   RMC is the military college of the Canadian Forces and is the degree-granting university creating military officers. (think Sandhurst in the UK and West Point in the US)  It was established in 1876 and is located on 101 acres in Kingston, Ontario.  The college is a blend of older, historic buildings and...

So many opinions on the 14th of February . . . Is it a true holiday or just a made up holiday to line the pockets of business? Did Hallmark create it or is it a day of Love? No matter how you feel about it, it exists like the falling tree in the forest! Do you enjoy a romantic night in with a specially prepared candle light dinner     OR would you prefer to dine out in your favourite restaurant enjoying the delicacies de jour ? My inbox is filled with special menus from local restaurants that serve two purposes: 1.  They give me options from which to choose should we decide to eat out 2.  They give me options from which to choose should we decide to stay in and create our own masterpiece! Many people dream of retiring on an island and allowing their stress to drift away. Here in Kingston, Gananoque and the 1000 Islands, we can make it happen for you! The largest island in the 1000 Islands group is Wolfe Island and it is accessed by Ferry from Kingston as well as from Cape Vincent in New York State.  You can find it at the entrance to the St Lawrence River in Lake Ontario off the shore of Kingston, Ontario. I wrote a blog the other day about riding the ferry on a day when the windchill was approx. minus 38 degrees.   Click Here In the comments section I spoke of the bubble system that allows the ferry to cross in open water in the winter months.   Many years ago we would have seen Christmas trees on the ice marking the route for cars to drive over on the ice as well as sn...
