I like to go shopping once in a while, especially hardware shopping. Even if I don't really need anything, I'll quite often stop at the TSC store in Belleville if I happen to be passing by. The TSC Stores are a chain, and they bill themselves as The incredible Country Hardware Store, and they are that indeed. If you live in a larger urban centre, chances are you wouldn't come across a TSC store, the closest one to Toronto is in Uxbridge. They specialize in products for farmers, hunters and country people. The TSC store in Belleville is the only place that I have seen this brand of shampoo called Mane 'n Tail, a shampoo that can be used on both horses and humans. Apparently it's the only cross over shampoo that can be used by both species. It must work quite well on humans, because it's ...

I'm sure that by now most of you are aware of the new social network called Pinterest . It has suddenly appeared on the social network landscape seemingly out of nowhere. There was very little fanfare building up to its launch, it was just there. Pinterest combines the words "pin" and "interest"Pinterest is based around photography. From what I understand (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) it's a site where people can post photographs of their interests with a brief description and not much else. People can then "like" the photographs and leave a brief comment. It's a very appealing concept to the amateur photographers out there who want an audience for their work. I can really see how this would be very popular with decorators, home stagers, and to an extent, real estate agents...

When it comes to real estate, we seem to pay a lot of attention to trends. It makes a lot of sense. Home buyers want to ensure that the home they are buying will retain its value, and what's more valuable than something that's in demand? Trends seem to determine what is in demand and what isn't. Real estate professionals also keep an eye out for trends. It helps us determine where we should concentrate our efforts. Our paycheques depend on this. It seems to me that the zeitgeist of this particular real estate era centres around the concepts of downsizing and simplifying. This is pretty natural since the North American population is aging and a great number of people are experiencing financial uncertainty. It's also pretty trendy in a Zen sort of way to have the desire to carry less burd...

I'm pleased to announce the new Quinte Real Estate Iphone app. It's available for free, click the link and download it if you happen to have an iphone and are interested in real estate in the Quinte area. At present, this link is the only place where it can be downloaded, but it will be available through your regular app outlets shortly. If you have a blackberry or Android phone, stay tuned, you will be able to download one for your phones shortly. If you are interested in buying or selling real estate in the Quinte market, then this app might be a very handy thing to have on your phone. I will be upgrading the app's capabilities within the next couple of weeks, so if anyone has suggestions on how to improve it, just let me know, and if it's a good idea and it's feasible, it will be don...

I have spent a lot of time trying to think of innovative ways of marketing myself. Most business people who use social media have become familiar with the term "personal branding". Personal branding makes a lot of sense since most of us are trying to stand out from the crowd, and just riding the coat tails of your brokerage's image  won't cut it any more. One of the agents in Canada who has taken personal branding to the next level is Active Rain's own Valerie Zinger. She is an Ottawa area agent, but her newest campaign has been very effective, so effective in fact, that her name is well known in my area, more than 200 miles and three real estate boards away. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty certain her name is on the tips of people's tongues all over our very large nation. I will have to c...

I have been very fortunate to have been able to volunteer my time at a couple of different venues in the last week. It's Christmas season, and I was thankful to have the opportunity to ease my mind away from business and the more commercial aspects that this time of the year usually foists upon us. Paul Brandt is in the middle of his Canadian tour at the moment, and last week made stops in both Peterborough and Belleville. I would have to say that Paul is probably the most popular Canadian country musician at the moment, and if you had a chance to see his show you would understand why. The Empire Theatre in Belleville and the Showplace Theatre in Peterborough were packed for the shows. The reason I was there though was to support the opening act, High Valley and their efforts on behalf ...

Since 1957, Thanksgiving in Canada (Jour de l'Action de grâce) has been celebrated on the second Monday in October (the same day Americans celebrate Columbus Day). Canada has always celebrated Thanksgiving earlier, but in 1957 the Canadian Parliament declared that the second Monday in October would be recognized as; “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.’’ Why do the two countries celebrate on different days? There's a couple of reasons really. You might already have guessed the first reason, it makes logical sense. Canada (for the most part) is further north, and therefore has a shorter growing season, and the harvest has to come in quite a bit earlier than it does in most of the U.S., so therefore it makes sense to ...

It's that time of the year again when most of us are reluctantly starting to think about Christmas, or more accurately, Christmas shopping. I'm sure that everybody has people who are difficult to shop for on their Christmas list. There are also people who we feel that we are obliged to buy presents for even though they probably don't need whatever it is we are going to end up buying for them. Personally, I don't need all the booze that gets given to me during the Christmas season. I couldn't possibly drink it all. I also am the proud owner of two nose hair trimmers. I suppose that I'm set for life in that department as well. One Christmas idea that I have really made use of over the last few years is the World Vision Gift Catalogue. I really like the idea because these gifts are valued ...

It has been a rather gloomy Saturday so far, so I have been browsing around on the internet looking for a bit of inspiration. I found a rather newsworthy story that I think will do the trick. The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is being held tomorrow. It's an important marathon, it's a qualifier for the Boston Marathon (the granddaddy of all marathons), there's $150,000 worth of prize money up for grabs, and the Olympic commitees of quite a few nations are using this marathon to determine who will be on their national teams in London next summer. Needless to say, there will be quite a few high profile runners competing tomorrow. The runner who has grabbed my attention though, will not be finishing near the front of the pack and will not be chosen to compete for his nation at the ...

I guess I should pay more attention to my surroundings. I have worked in this office for a few months now and never noticed the picture in the lobby of the Belleville McFarlands. The Belleville McFarlands are a local senior hockey team, and back in the days when there were only 6 NHL teams they would have been considered one step below the NHL. They still do compete for the Allan Cup, which is Canada's senior hockey championship, but in this day and age of "professional" sports, few people pay much attention to it. It wasn't always so, The Allan cup has been around since 1909, and it used to be a huge deal in Canada. It was such an honour to win the cup that the winning team was sent overseas to represent Canada in the World championships every year. I never had a clue that the agent si...

Yesterday was a pretty busy day. I'm getting two deals together and they are both reaching the final stages. There's been quite a bit of back and forth and I'm pretty sure that by the end of the day I'll have them both in the bag. I'm also just starting the paperwork for a third deal which will hopefully be relatively quick, willing buyers, willing sellers and all that jazz. I suppose that this is what being a real estate agent is all about. One of the things that has really been obvious is the amount of paper on my desk. Piles of it. From the initial stages of a home search where I print out the MLS sheets for all the houses that we're going to see, to the initial agreement of purchase and sale and all the versions thereof every time there's a counter, to all the ancilliary documentati...
