I have written a lot about the arts in Brecksville and now, music gets its day. I had a wonderful experience last week as I was able to attend the combined Middle School and High School Orchestra event held at the Brecksville-Broadview Hts. High School.  Our daughter is a viola player and has been in the Orchestra since 4th grade, which is when it is initially offered in the school system.  She has enjoyed playing and we are just thrilled with how far she has come.   What really struck me during this wonderful event was the number of students involved in the orchestra – or shall I say orchestras!  Our school system begins orchestra in 4th grade and continues through high school.  There are 4 orchestras to choose from:  symphonic, concert, string, and chamber.  There are two directors:  ...

For many years the Pilgrim Inn was a landmark in the heart of Brecksville, but has been defunct for quite some time. As it happens, it is located on the same grounds as our beautiful office of ReMax Trinity. In November, Brecksville residents voted for a rezoning of the property that would allow a skilled nursing/rehabilitation facility to be built in place of the Pilgrim Inn. If this were to happen, it would be so wonderful for those who have been lifelong residents of Brecksville and surrounding communities to be able to go here for rehab.  This will give those folks an opportunity to stay "close to home" and potentially close to friends and family. The plan was to have the Inn demolished by year's end but winter came early this year so that did not happen. Those of us who work at ReMax...

I cannot say enough about the arts in Brecksville.  I wrote about the incredible opportunities the Brecksville Center for the Arts provides to the community and regional area and at the same time, we are fortunate to have an art gallery with a terrific artist, Paul Duda, right in the heart of downtown Brecksville.  You can visit his website at Paul Duda Gallery, but I wanted to write this post to describe my own experience.  Our daughter is an equestrian and two years ago she won 4th place in the 2’ jumping classes on her pony in the Brecksville Horse Show.  She was up against 16 other girls on horses, as we say.  It was a great day for her and she and we was so thrilled.  We, of course, took lots of pictures, and my wife, Julie, had the great idea of having one of them blown up and fra...

Each summer it is hard to believe that the huge river ford area at the intersection of Chippewa Creek Road and Riverview Road in the Brecksville Reservation is groomed and gussied-up for the annual Brecksville Kiwanis Horse Show.  The meadow is totally transformed by two large show rings, a main spectator striped tent and surrounding seating boxes.  There are also bleachers, a concession stand, and vendors all around.  It is a huge community event and many riders come from all around the area to participate.  The show is held the first week-end of August with Saturday hosting a fun, competitive hunter pace that is always well-attended.  It is conducted on the bridle trails throughout the Reservation.  It starts at 10:00am and finishes when the last team completes the pace.  The big show...

The local Sun Courier newspaper just reported that the bald eagle pair has returned to their nest in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park! This makes year three for this wonderful event and hopefully there will be a third “eaglet” in 2009! The Park takes this very seriously and actually makes sure there are no huge disturbances during this time, eg, gawkers, walkers, stopped cars, etc., because the eggs need to stay warm via constant attention from the parents. How exciting! Somehow it makes me feel like things are looking up when I consider this huge event has happened three years in a row right down the street from where my family lives. Yeah, the economy could be way better, but bald eagles nesting down the street? I mean, we are constantly amazed at the different types of birds that ou...

The first wonderful thing you notice about Austin's Wood Fire Grille is the hint of smokiness in the air. That's followed by the mouth watering aroma of steaks and ribs being prepared on the grill!I asked Erik Martinez, who co-manages Austin's with Phil Skoczen, "What do you love most about Austin's?" and he replied , "The wood fire grill which uses a natural hardwood."The atmosphere is very cozy, with a welcoming fireplace and friendly wait staff.                                       Austin's is open 7 days a week, for lunch and dinner, serving ribs, steaks, fresh seafood, salads, and sandwiches. It's located in the heart of Brecksville at 8121 Chippewa Rd. (Rte. 82) 440-546-1033.If you are planning a trip to Brecksville, make sure you include a trip to Austin's Wood Fire Grille!Go he...

It was a snowy, blustery, cold day and I picked up our daughter from Middle School.  We had 45 minutes to kill before her hair appointment, so where did we head?  To the local Brecksville Starbucks, of course!  We love it there.  While I am not a fan of national chain retail stores, Starbucks is an exception -- their coffee, employees and ambiance are first rate.  While there are other local coffee shops that I frequent and really enjoy on occasion, Brecksville has Starbucks.  The best part is when my daughter orders her favorite coffee drink.  The Starbucks attendant loves it, too, and always remembers it, though maybe not the last detail-a tall, skinny, ½ decaf, vanilla latte, with caramel.  A shot of caramel or a drizzle?  A shot--you got it.  My order is sooo much easier-a tall, car...

Best doughnuts Eastern United States - Brecksville, Ohio "I have traveled the world and eaten at the best bakeries from Italy to Argentina. Brecksville Donuts has by far the best doughnuts I've ever had. Words can't describe how good they are!"           (http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Brecksville.Doughnuts.And.Coffee.Shoppe.440-838-4399) Not fancy and surely not imposing, the small, retro building sits back across from the Brecksville Shopping Center beckoning customers to come and sample the incredibly tasty donuts!  My son has made me get up at 8:00 am on Saturday mornings many times to make sure we made it to the Donut Shoppe in time to get our favorites.  What are our favorites?  Glazed, chocolate frosted, and vanilla frosted.  Every once in a while we indulge in other untr...

It's Sunday, February 1st, 2009 and the sun is shining, the temperature is actually above freezing (first time in about forever) and the world is right....for sled riding.  Load up the kids, the dog, the sleds, and venture down the road a whopping 1 mile!  Yes, one of the best sledding hills around is a mile from our house in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  We discovered it when we moved to Brecksville during one of those winters when a record was set for the most snow - 155" or something like that!!!! The nice thing about this rather large hill, is that you are never competing for space, as generally there are either few or no other people around or someone has just left---and fortunately for us, built a really cool jump ramp!  The other nice thing is that the hill is pretty high, ...

What a truly unique place-the Brecksville Center for the Arts (BCA) is a true opportunity for people of all ages-from preschoolers to older adults to find their creative side, enjoy the discovery of  painting, hold a paintbrush or make a piece of pottery for the first time, or just enjoy time with friends at a special art exhibit.. Not only do they offer classes at the Center, but they offer after school programs at the local schools, summer classes and a whole host of events. Our son enjoyed the BCA summer program. He took three different sessions throughout the summer after kindergarten and made some really cool things.   He still has all of his art projects in his room!  He also took part in an after-school program offered at his elementary school during the year and had a great time...

Every year, Brecksville has two parades-a Memorial Day Parade and a Christmas Parade.  The entire community shows up for both parades and each is always a great treat.  Our daughter has participated in the Christmas Parade twice, once on a horse for Maplecrest Farm and once walking for Brecksville Stables-both times were very cold, but very fun! Both parades include kids, adults, and an animal or two or ten... representing all kinds of groups and organizations in the Brecksville community.  There are City representatives, floats, scouting troops, the High School Band, baton twirlers, community sports teams, tiny tots in wagons, and of course, historic cars, fire engines, and tractors.  It is all a real treat and we look forward to both of them every year.  Of course all the kids in the ...
