The Shinnecock Indians called the land "Quawcantucke," which meant "the land that trembles." The land trembles still as a result of ocean surf just on the other side of  dunes that border the south side of QUANTUCK BAY. Quantuck Bay is bounded by the landmasses of Quogue,  Westhampton Beach, and Quiogue. It is fed by fresh water springs from Quantuck Creek and Aspatuck Creek and at one time, prior to 1930 when Moriches inlet came into being, it was once a fresh water lake.   Today, Quantuck Bay is a popular shallow bay with large homes dotting its shoreline.  Sailboats, small powerboats, and watercraft of every kind use the sheltered bay for popular water sports.   One of the last pieces of open land on the shore of Quantuck Bay has just come on the market for sale...

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NEW YORK SINCE 1988 ! The Arbor Day Foundation, based in New York has named the Incorprated Village of Weshampton Beach a "Tree City USA" for the 22nd year in a row. Westhampton Beach, New York has made a commitment to community forestry through tree-care workshops, education, publicity and management. Trees reduce the "heat island" effect caused by pavement and buildings, and they can increase property values if placed properly. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particles. And, trees can be stately old works of art that just make you feel good when you walk beneath them. And when the tiny petals start to drop... it feels like mystica warm snow flurry that makes everyone feel energized! In Westhampton Beach, the spring flowering Bradford Pea...

SIGHTSEEING IN WESTHAMTON BEACH - THE BALDT ANCHOR     As you drive around WESTHAMPTON BEACH a big anchor might catch your eye as you drive by the Westhampton Beach Marina on Library Avenue. It sits high and dry surrounded by flowers and a big rock that tells its story.   The anchor is all that is left of what was once the good ship William C. Carnegie, which sank off Moriches in 1909. The Carnegie, a five-masted schooner was carrying coal from Boston bound for New York when she hit the bar about 600 yards off the beach. All 12 men aboard were saved by Lifesavers from the Moriches Life Saving Station.   How the anchor came to it’s current resting place is another story.  The Carnegie was the first of the great schooners of its time to be equipped with two stockless anchors. The Baldt An...

One of my favorite places to visit in the WESTHAMPTON area is the Tuthill House Museum, which is the main building of the WESTHAMPTON BEACH HISTORICAL SOCIETY located at 101 Mill Road in WESTHAMPTON BEACH.   The mission of the Society is to collect and preserve materials pertaining to the Greater Westhampton area, which includes Eastport, Speonk, Remsenburg, Westhampton, Westhampton Dunes, Westhampton Beach, and Quiogue and to interpret the history of the area through exhibitions, educational programs, and publications.   The Society does a great job in fulfilling its mission. The Tuthill House museum has annual summer exhibits that are always fascinating for young and old. This summer’s exhibit features a photo gallery of historic scenes “Around Westhampton.”   On the grounds on the...

Is your home's asking price in reality or fantasy land in the Hamptons? Consider this real estate market is like an out-of-control bus speeding ahead with no brakes, you are my seller and are standing directly in front of the bus, I'm your agent and I'm trying to push you out of the way and save your life, however you are pushing back and are going to kill us both, I don't want to die, so you have a choice to make let me push you out of the way and help you avoid financial suicide or I'm going to get out of the way, because I can't help you, if you don't want my help and that bus is going to kill you.  This has helped a lot of my sellers deal with the reality of today's real estate market. Someone once told me if you want reality, go into your bedroom, lock the door, take off all your c...

What am I seeing this week in the Hamptons real estate market? I am still new to this whole blogging thing, it's funny when I am out in the field showing property and driving to appointments, I have all of these great ideas, this week I decided to roll with What am I seeing this week in the Hamptons real estate market? The Hamptons has always been known as "A Playground For the Rich" but in 2010 who is the rich?  Where's the Bently's, where's the Bling, who takes a month to vacation in the South of France?  All of my buyers from 2009 and those that I am currently working with have recession proof careers, i.e. doctors, attorneys, accountants, and the like.  By nature, a little more conservative with their money, they are not so concerned with buying into the lifestyle, as making good fi...

THE SS       A small sloop sits quietly at it’s mooring at the mouth of Beaver Dam Creek in Westhampton.  The small sloop is a 16 foot one design “”SS “ Class wooden boat, the first of which was built in 1908.  The boat is part of a growing fleet of restored boats that once again ply the waters of Shinnecock Bay in Quogue, Quantuck Bay in Quiogue, and Moriches Bay in Westhampton. Thanks to a massive restoration effort in anticipation of the centennial celebration of the class at the Westhampton Yacht Squadron in 2008, the SS class is now a viable racing class with over 40 boats out of a total of 154 that were built during the hey day of SS class racing (1908-1970). Not all of the 40 boats that are still in sailing condition are racers, some are just wonderful day sailors, sailed for f...

Quiogue is a little known piece of “the Hamptons,” often confused with Quogue. A very special place, Quiogue is a one-square-mile peninsula situated between the villages of Westhampton Beach and Quogue. There is no town center and the zip code is 11978, which means all the mail is processed thru Westhampton Beach.   Indians inhabited Quiogue three hundred and fifty years ago, and the first white settlers to refer to the area as Quiogue were the Fosters in 1707. By the mid-1800s, Quiogue had become a center of clergymen and professors from New York. The Brooklyn Eagle on August 6, 1899 published an article about Quiogue referring to the area as “a quiet, sylvan corner, lying midway between Westhampton and Quogue, on the shores of the Quantuck Bay. Though tucked away out of sight an...

Why it's a myth to believe that an OPEN listing is the way to sell your home in the Hamptons? This week while prospecting, looking for new sellers and buyers for the homes I have currently listed, I spoke to a few owner's who were offering their home for sale as an open listing, please see their comments below.  So to clarify the disadvantages of selling your home as open listing, I thought I would write this blog. I network with agents from all over the country, and owner's offering their home for sale as an open listing is unique to the Hamptons.  An open listing is when a seller offers their home for sale to all the agents, instead of choosing one agent to represent them and their home.  It's the shotgun approach, they blast or at least try to communicate that their home is for sale ...

I had that same question when a friend invited me to Brooklyn Saturday night, February 6, 2010. What is elemental sustenance & how does it effect Kianjavato, Madagascar?  To view the website for Elemental Sustenance . It's an innovative collaboration solving global needs.  So, again I asked what does that mean?  So the collaboration initiative in this case is to bring two elemental yet life changing products to Kianjavato, Madagascar.  The first is a composting toilet, turn one person's river contaminating waste into productive soil for a full year.   The second is a filtering rain barrel which turns rainwater into clean drinking wate for a school of 150 children. Approximately, 200 people attended from professors, doctors, volunteers, business professionals, a wide array of people eage...

14th Annual Snowball "Winter Doldrum's Extravaganza" In Westhampton Beach This past Saturday I attended the 14th Annual Snowball "Winter Doldrum's Extravaganza" In Westhampton Beach.  It was my first time attending, so I will help you out...as to what a SNOWBALL is?  It's Westhampton Beach's Annual "Winter Doldrums" celebration with heavy hors d'oeuvres, lots of dancing, DJ and their was a guy named Jim Vignato singing sporadically...very entertaining.  Besides a great reason to get out on a Saturday night in the middle of the Winter in the Hamptons...it was all for a good cause. There were raffles and prizes and it really was a lot of fun to attend 14th Annual Snowball "Winter Doldrum's Extravaganza" In Westhampton Beach.  Over 300 people showed up to one of my favorite restaurant's S...
