I was in Tarrytown NY last night enjoying a late latte at Coffee Labs and wandering around enjoying one of the nicest evenings this summer has had to offer up.  Suddenly – right in front of me is this tree.  It’s an ordinary tree like all the others on Main Street.  It’s around 11 PM and I was tired.  But there was something different about the tree…It had a bunch of paper notes hung on it like ornaments on a Christmas tree.  I looked at the pieces of paper and they all had writing scribbled on them.  Each note began with “I wish.”  Then on the trunk of the tree was a little box which held the paper pieces and a pen – and on the box it said “Wish Tree.” I looked at the notes and to my delight very few of them were trivial.  I saw nothing like “I wish I had a nicer car” or “I wish I co...

Tarrytown NY is known for its shopping and fine dining.  Tarrytown NY restaurants are known for their variety and quality and during the summer months tables and umbrellas dot the landscape of Broadway and Main St. while residents and visitor enjoy outdoor dining.  Personally, I like Tarrytown.  It has all the charm of a turn-of-the-century Westchester village with an artsy edge that gives it personality and just a touch of funk.  Although restaurants like Sweetgrass Tarrytown which offers only the best in organic  fine dining, there is an informality that is very appealing and not as apparent in some of the villages along the Long Island Sound.  Since Tarrytown to Grand Central is only 37 minutes by express train, this is a commuter village with a vibe all its own.   To Search for Ho...

Tarrytown NY is one of those river towns in Westchester that has a vibe all its own.  The streets are not rolled up at 6 PM – a night life exists.  No – its not the dynamic city-style nightlife of Manhattan or even downtown White Plains, but the village has plenty of fine dining and activities that keep people on the streets well after dark. One of the listings on my calendar of events Westchester NY was Tarrytown’s 3rd Friday.  Yesterday was, of course the 3rd Friday of July and in spite of the blistering heat and humidity – this unique Tarrytown monthly event was well attended.  3rd Friday is a way for merchants to market their wares – offer specials and for vendors to set up booths and for everyone in general to have fun.   There is face painting, and activities for the kids, while...

Last Friday, I left Dutchess County, NY and headed to Ulster County, then Orange County and Rockland County.  To get to Westchester I had to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge.  I wanted a view of the bridge, however, I was driving so I asked my daughter to take this shot.  On the way back I took a different route; I passed through  a small portion of Connecticut and then I was back in New York.  The last County before Dutchess was Punam County.  You could say I went in a circle and in the middle of all of this was the Hudson River. I went down the west side and came back up the east side. These counties make up part of the Hudson Valley region. The River towns of Westchester NY run along the eastern side of the Hudson River.  The area being covered is largely in the town of Greenburgh and includes the villages of Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  Sleepy Hollow is actually located in the town of Mt. Pleasant, but Sleepy Hollow shares the 10591 zip code and a school system with the village of Tarrytown.  The Westchester to NYC commute is extremely easy from these locations.  Each village boasts an Metro North Westchester train station with a commuting time of less than 45 minutes to Grand Central Station.   The area is serviced by Metro North’s Hudson line. The fact that these are commutable villages with walkable neighborhoods, makes these areas very desirable for New Yorkers lo...

Waiting for the market to bottom out! No one, and I mean no one, can predict exactly where the market is going to be in a few months, next year, or further down the road, so trying to time your home purchase with the bottom of the market is pretty much futile. Generally there is really no bad or good time to buy if you are buying for the right reasons. If you're financially and emotionally ready to be a homeowner, it's always a good time to buy. Just think: all the time you spend on figuring out when to purchase a home, you could have been building equity, getting tax deductions and enjoying the many other benefits of home ownership! Buying a short sale, foreclosure or fixer-upper without doing your homework! Some home buyers are so set on finding a bargain, and many times they overlook...

The river towns comprise the towns/villages in Westchester that are located along the Hudson River.  This blog covers the lower Westchester region primarily in the town of Greenburgh.  Sleepy Hollow is included since it shares a school district with Tarrytown.   Initially I ran these statistics on Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, but the sales volume was too low to create reliable statistics. In general, prices in the river towns such as Tarrytown NY showed some signs of stabilization in the river towns. Certainly the area has been badly beaten up over the past few years, so it was good to see a slowdown in declining prices. Cooperatives: The pricing for cooperatives was dicey because during the 4th quarter there were practically no 2BR sales.  This skewed the price point dramatically  dow...

Westchester residents enjoy some of the highest energy costs in the nation.  If you heat your home with home heating oil - you are well aware of the pain. But even home owners who use natural gas are getting hit.  ConEd has some of the highest service costs nationally - so everyone feels the heat - no pun intended. On Wednesday, Feb 3 at 7 PM, the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council will be hosting an event "Stay Warm, Save Money" at the Silver Tips Tea Room on 3 North Broadway in Tarrytown NY. Enjoy the Tea and Nibbles while learning how to save energy and money.  Included are cheap tricks as well as information on government subsidies. I could definitely use some help in this department. My heating costs have been steadily escalating.  So I plan to stop by and learn.   For more i...

Over the past couple of years, I’ve written several blogs about local businesses.  One of my favorite haunts has been Coffee Labs of Tarrytown NY.  Coffee Labs was established in  2002 and for seven years has roasted and served wonderful coffee drinks and freshly roasted coffee to brew at home.  Coffee Labs was named for the owner’s chocolate Labrador Retrievers. During tht time, Mike and Alicia have established Coffee Labs as a  eco-friendly and  pet-friendly coffee shop.  Since they don’t prepare food on-site, they had an arrangement with the health department that allowed patrons to bring their dogs into the shop.  The dogs had to be properly leashed and be well-behaved.  I even wrote a blog about how Jade and I often spent mornings at Coffee Labs while I completed correspondence a...
