  For those who haven't seen the papers and don't know about the layoffs, the Minisink Valley School District has just laid off 24 full time teacher's aides.  They have announced that 31 Teaching and Support positions are to follow.  There will be NO ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS CUT!  (WHAT???) What does that mean to our children?  Larger classes which means less one on one time for those who need it among so many other changes.  The teachers have been working without a contract for over a year on top of everything else.  If you feel strongly about this and would like to do something about it they are having a rally on Thursday (tomorrow) March 25th at 6:45 pm in the back parking lot of the Minisink Valley School just prior to the School Board's meeting.  They have denied a public portion ... 03/24/2010

  I got a new cellphone this week and this was a long time coming and I chose a Verizon Droid.  Partly because of Kathleen Cooper and several of my other friends who have them.  I still have a lot to learn about the phone because it has so many options, but what I know so far I love!  For those of you who want an Iphone but the service doesn't work in your area this is just as good if not better.  There are over 40,000 apps and any type of app you could possibly want.  You can check out the list of some of them on Kathleen's link and I will add some as I come across them.  The only downside I have seen to this phone so far is the battery does not last all that long when you are surfing or using alot of the functions at the same time.   This seems to be the same though for all of the sma... 03/07/2010

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 Cup finely chopped pecans 3    Tbls sugar 1    Box yellow cake mix 1    Cup pumpkin (from can of pumpkin) 1/2 Cup water 1/3 Cup vegetable oil 4    Eggs 1 1/2 Tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 Container Betty Crocker cream cheese frosting DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place paper baking cups in muffin tray (24 count) In heavy, 8 inch, non stick skillet cook pecans and 2 Tbls of sugar over low heat 8 minutes. Stir constantly until sugar is melted.  Spoon and spread pecans onto a sheet of waxed paper.   Sprinkle with rest of sugar and toss.  In bowl beat cake mix, pumpkin, water, oil, eggs, pumpkin pie spice with mixer on low speed 30 seconds.  Beat medium speed 2 minutes. Last Monday was incredibly cold as it has been all this past week.  I was coming past the farm where they keep the animals they use in the movies and I could see they were all huddled together but it must have been feeding time because they were unusually close to the road and I couldn't resist stopping and snapping a few pictures even though I was in a hurry.  It is very rare for them to be so close to the road because their roaming area is just so large.  A lot of the time you can't even see them because they are way off in the fields.  I was hoping to see the elephant but no such luck.  I was lucky enough to catch the zebra and was real happy about that!  Imagine seeing a zebra in 5 degree weather!  I haven't given up on the elephant and hope to catch some shots of that during the su... 02/06/2010

What a great idea!  As someone who has extreme laryngitis today this is extremely frustrating (and painful) for me - I can't even hum along. It has been 25 years since the last one and they had been thinking about doing another one. Unfortunately there was this terrible tragedy which brought about the necessity for it. I got this in an email and just had to share it.  It was such a touching story and we have had several such stories in our local paper over the past year.  Never stop believing in the power of love and hope!  Enjoy!The  brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to  their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban  Brooklyn , arrived in early October excited about  their opportunities When they saw their church, it  was very run down and needed much work. They set a  goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas  Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished.   On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm  hit the area and lasted for two days. I was coming from a listing appointment about a month ago (when things were still a little bit green) and took some unexpected photos that I put on my computer for another day and came across them today.  Today when  everything is brown and blah and we are expecting another snow storm by morning.   I was driving down a road that I travel all the time when in the distance I saw two animals in the road that appeared to be fighting.  I could tell one was a squirrel by the long and quickly moving tail.  The other I wasn't sure because I was so far away and it appeared to be hunched over and kind of bobbing at the squirrel.   Now I mention that I travel this road all the time because other than natures regular woodland creatures like squirrels etc...the only other animals I have seen on this... 01/07/2010

INGREDIENTS: 2    Cups Milk 3/4 Cup Water 2    Tbls butter or margarine 1    Package HIDDEN VALLEY RANCH Dressing 1    Cup sour cream 1    Box (7.2 oz) BETTY CROCKER HOME STYLE creamy butter mashed potatoes 4    Slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 2    Tbls thinly sliced green onion DIRECTIONS: In 3-quart saucepan heat milk, water and butter to boiling.   Stir in ranch dressing mix and sour cream; beat until smooth.   Stir in 3 slices of bacon and both pouches of potatoes just until moistened. Let stand one minute.   Stir with fork until smooth.   Spoon into serving dish.  Top with remaining bacon and onions. ENJOY!! (Recipe is from Betty Crocker) 11/24/2009
