On a call I received recently on the North Shore of Long Island for a Feng Shui Consultation, my client could FEEL that the energy in his home had changed.  Along with new financial issues and relationship problems, he knew about Feng Shui and KNEW the renovations had something to do with what he was feeling.  He had recently moved to Oyster Bay from Manhattan.   With all the snow in the ground and more snow forecast next week, chances are we are going to have a White Christmas.   It really feels like Christmas when there is snow on the ground.   Look at my viburnum tree in front of my house.  It has a pyramidal shape and it is my outside Christmas tree.  One year, we put white Christmas lights along the branches.  It took us 20 sets of lights to cover the whole tree.  We kept the lights for three years.  One spring when it was covered with white flowers, we turned on the light and it was magical albeit weird having Christmas lights on Mother's Day.  Then I had to prune the tree, so we took them all off and never put them back again.  White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin and introduced by Bing Crosby in a 1942 movie called "Holiday Inn... 12/21/2008

  Christmas season is underway and I don't mean the Christmas shopping season.  Advent is here.  We are preparing for the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  This weekend, I participated in two Lessons and Carols, one on Saturday, Dec. 6 at my own parish, St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay and the other one today, Dec. 7 at St. Agnes Cathedral.  I belong to St. Dominic Msgr. Oyster Bay is a picturesque small village on a peninsula with tree lined residential streets, historic landmarks and beautiful waterfront area. Every year since the Interreligious & Human Needs Council of Oyster Bay started, they have the thanksgiving ecumenical service.  I have been a member for 20 years and I only missed it last year because I was out of the country.  It is always held on Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Early on, they used to have the service at 7 PM.  This time around, they changed the time to 4 PM.  There are several houses of worship in town so we rotate the service at different churches or synagogue.  This year we had the ecumenical service at the Community United Methodist Church in East Norwich.  The host church is in charge of the program which is a mixture of prayers and hymns and each minister of church participate.  Today, we were welcomed by the host minister, followed by readings and prayer by the F... 11/23/2008

For the first 30 years of my marriage, I cooked Thanksgiving Dinner for my family.  It started with my brother getting a free turkey from his office and since he was a bachelor, he gave the turkey to me to cook.  I had my mother-in-law, my brother and my husband and me for thanksgiving dinner.  We lived in New York city at that time.  From that small beginning, my family grew.  My other brother came from abroad, then my younger brother followed him.  Then they all got married, have their children and at the last dinner, we had 23 people.   In the caring community of Oyster Bay-East Norwich, plans for the holiday season include program to help less fortunate families, senior citizens and disabled individuals.  Back in 1992, I got involved with the Interreligious Group in Oyster Bay.  At that time, the treasurer of CSAC (Community Social Action Council) which is a committee of the Interreligious Group wanted to retire.  I was new to the club but since I have an accounting background, I was asked to be the treasurer.  I happily accepted the post and I have been treasurer of CSAC ever since.  The CSAC committee is in charge of the Food Drive.  We ask the public to donate food for Thanksgiving and to donate money as well.  We send out about 1000 solicitation letters in October and then money starts coming in.  We have been r... 11/21/2008

I never marched in a parade before.  I was always a watcher of parades.  Today Oyster Bay had a special homegrown parade to honor Theodore Roosevelt's (our 26th U.S. President) 150th birthday.  I was the treasurer of the Oyster Bay Historical for 6 years and currently serve on the board and at the last board meeting when they asked for volunteers to march, I raised my hand.  Today was the day and it was lots of fun.  The weather was threatening.  It was overcast with a rain forecast.  We felt raindrops while we were lining up at ten of 1PM.  I was one of the banner bearers of the Oyster Bay Historical Society's banner.  We were placed near the front following the Teddy Bear riding in a car.  Our Director was in a blue "George Washington" costume with tri-corner hat complete with a ponyt... 10/25/2008

  The Oyster Festival in Oyster Bay is the East Coast's largest waterfront festival and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this coming weekend - Oct. 17-19, 2008.  This year, Oyster Festival begins on Friday night, Oct. 17 from 6:30 - 10:30 PM (amusements and rides only).  On Saturday, it opens at 11:00 AM and ends at 7:00 PM.  On Sunday, it opens at 11:00 AM and ends at 6:00 PM.   Revenues will help the non-profit organizations in Oyster Bay.  The Oyster Festival is organized and operated by the Oyster Bay Rotary Club and has generated over $5 million for charities during its entire history. When autumn comes, we in Oyster Bay, NY and the neighboring towns are enjoying the cool weather, the changing colors of the trees and the various festivals to celebrate the season.   One of them is the Annual Fall Harvest Festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Mill Neck which is held on Columbus Day weekend.  This year it will be this weekend - Oct. 11 & 12 from 9AM-5PM.  There will be plenty of apples, cheeses, baked goods, seasonal produce, children's games, facepainting and sign language shop.
