(Feng Shui Manhattan Long Island)
On a call I received recently on the North Shore of Long Island for a Feng Shui Consultation, my client could FEEL that the energy in his home had changed.  Along with new financial issues and relationship problems, he knew about Feng Shui and KNEW the renovations had something to do with what he was feeling.  He had recently moved to Oyster Bay from Manhattan. He told me he had searched the Internet and come across my name-and that he'd found my blogs and read many of them.  They made sense to him he said and told me he'd been reading about Feng Shui for quite a while but needed an "expert." When a prospective Feng Shui Client tells me they can FEEL the Energy is off in their space, even if they don't know WHY, I believe them.  I do believe you can feel subtle changes in your environme...

With all the snow in the ground and more snow forecast next week, chances are we are going to have a White Christmas.   It really feels like Christmas when there is snow on the ground.   Look at my viburnum tree in front of my house.  It has a pyramidal shape and it is my outside Christmas tree.  One year, we put white Christmas lights along the branches.  It took us 20 sets of lights to cover the whole tree.  We kept the lights for three years.  One spring when it was covered with white flowers, we turned on the light and it was magical albeit weird having Christmas lights on Mother's Day.  Then I had to prune the tree, so we took them all off and never put them back again.  White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin and introduced by Bing Crosby in a 1942 movie called "Holiday Inn...

Christmas season is underway and I don't mean the Christmas shopping season.  Advent is here.  We are preparing for the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  This weekend, I participated in two Lessons and Carols, one on Saturday, Dec. 6 at my own parish, St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay and the other one today, Dec. 7 at St. Agnes Cathedral.  I belong to St. Dominic Msgr. Collins Memorial Choir and we had Lessons and Carol last night together with St. Dominic High School Choir and St. Dominic Elementary School Children's Choir.  It was great and it was televised by Cablevision and probably will be rebroadcast all thru the Christmas season.  Last year, the Lessons and Carols at St. Dominic was also televised and was shown at Cablevision as "Christmas in Oyster Bay".  I also belong to t...

Oyster Bay is a picturesque small village on a peninsula with tree lined residential streets, historic landmarks and beautiful waterfront area. The downtown area of Oyster Bay which the residents lovingly call the Oyster Bay Hamlet has small shops, restaurants, hair salons, hardware stores, few banks, houses of worship of different denominations and several museums. The residential downtown area of Oyster Bay is lined with colonial and victorian houses. Nearby is Oyster Bay Cove where Sagamore Hill is located. For people who are not familiar with Oyster Bay, Sagamore Hill was the home of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. His graveyard is close by near the intersection of Cove Rd and Cove Neck Rd. Oyster Bay area is served by three schools. There is t...

Every year since the Interreligious & Human Needs Council of Oyster Bay started, they have the thanksgiving ecumenical service.  I have been a member for 20 years and I only missed it last year because I was out of the country.  It is always held on Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Early on, they used to have the service at 7 PM.  This time around, they changed the time to 4 PM.  There are several houses of worship in town so we rotate the service at different churches or synagogue.  This year we had the ecumenical service at the Community United Methodist Church in East Norwich.  The host church is in charge of the program which is a mixture of prayers and hymns and each minister of church participate.  Today, we were welcomed by the host minister, followed by readings and prayer by the F...

For the first 30 years of my marriage, I cooked Thanksgiving Dinner for my family.  It started with my brother getting a free turkey from his office and since he was a bachelor, he gave the turkey to me to cook.  I had my mother-in-law, my brother and my husband and me for thanksgiving dinner.  We lived in New York city at that time.  From that small beginning, my family grew.  My other brother came from abroad, then my younger brother followed him.  Then they all got married, have their children and at the last dinner, we had 23 people. I always had chestnut stuffing for my turkey.  It was a hit with the family and we never changed it.  When my kids moved to California and we went there for Thanksgiving, my children wanted chestnut stuffing.  The first time, I did not know if they had ...

In the caring community of Oyster Bay-East Norwich, plans for the holiday season include program to help less fortunate families, senior citizens and disabled individuals.  Back in 1992, I got involved with the Interreligious Group in Oyster Bay.  At that time, the treasurer of CSAC (Community Social Action Council) which is a committee of the Interreligious Group wanted to retire.  I was new to the club but since I have an accounting background, I was asked to be the treasurer.  I happily accepted the post and I have been treasurer of CSAC ever since.  The CSAC committee is in charge of the Food Drive.  We ask the public to donate food for Thanksgiving and to donate money as well.  We send out about 1000 solicitation letters in October and then money starts coming in.  We have been r...

For people who want privacy, look no further.  Oyster Bay Cove is the place to be.  The late Oleg Cassini had a big place in Oyster Bay Cove.  Oyster Bay Cove is so different from the Hamptons because you can  keep your privacy here.   We do not have the glitz and glamour of the Hamptons.  People don't gawk at celebrity here.   Most celebrity who settle here are down to earth people who want to lead a quiet life although they are very involved in the community.  They give a lot to the community through the various charities.  Oyster Bay Cove lies east of Oyster Bay and East Norwich, north of Syosset, and west of Laurel Hollow.  Steamboat Landing, Landing Rd, end of Cove Woods Rd and only part of Cove Rd. have waterfront properties.  Houses in Oyster Bay Cove range in price from $895,000...

I never marched in a parade before.  I was always a watcher of parades.  Today Oyster Bay had a special homegrown parade to honor Theodore Roosevelt's (our 26th U.S. President) 150th birthday.  I was the treasurer of the Oyster Bay Historical for 6 years and currently serve on the board and at the last board meeting when they asked for volunteers to march, I raised my hand.  Today was the day and it was lots of fun.  The weather was threatening.  It was overcast with a rain forecast.  We felt raindrops while we were lining up at ten of 1PM.  I was one of the banner bearers of the Oyster Bay Historical Society's banner.  We were placed near the front following the Teddy Bear riding in a car.  Our Director was in a blue "George Washington" costume with tri-corner hat complete with a ponyt...

With the inventory so large, it is imperative for sellers to put some efforts to make their home salable. Your house should outshine the rest of houses in the market.  If other factors like location and prices are RIGHT, then the possibilities of your home being in a tip top condition will make the difference.  Some cosmetic changes can influence how quickly your property sells and at what price.   OUTDOORS: Keep lawn neat and mowed and shrubbery neatly pruned.  Remove or replace dead or dying plants.  Add color with blooming plants.  Place some flowering plants near the door.  Store hoses neatly.  Repair gates, fences and sidewalks.  Clean yard of all debris.  Keep driveway and steps clear of debris.  Fix all the cracks.  Apply fresh paint as needed, and replace damaged bricks or woo...

Driving through the towns of Muttontown, the Brookvilles, Oyster Bay Cove, Laurel Hollow, Mill Neck and Centre Island, one notices the colors of autumn beginning to appear.  Right here in our own backyard, we will soon see this autumnal splendor that Mother Nature gives us.   With this change in the seasons, we have lots of chores ahead of us to get the garden prepared for a long winter nap.  I keep myself very busy until it gets too cold to work outdoors.    We must take advantage of the mild weather that remains to start a compost pile from the falling leaves.  Oak leaves are the best.  If you have a lawn mower/shredder, run over the lawn a couple of times.  You can even spread the shredded oa...

When autumn comes, we in Oyster Bay, NY and the neighboring towns are enjoying the cool weather, the changing colors of the trees and the various festivals to celebrate the season.   One of them is the Annual Fall Harvest Festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Mill Neck which is held on Columbus Day weekend.  This year it will be this weekend - Oct. 11 & 12 from 9AM-5PM.  There will be plenty of apples, cheeses, baked goods, seasonal produce, children's games, facepainting and sign language shop. Mill Neck Manor is an 86-acre estate formerly owned by the Dodge's family.  The manor house is an Elizabethan Tudor mansion from England and was dismantled and shipped to Mill Neck and reassembled in Mill Neck brick by brick.  In the 80's when my husband was very involved with the K...
