Located just 25 miles north of New York City, the village of Nyack, NY was originally settled by the Nyack Indians. It is now bundled together as several hamlets, Grandview, Upper Grandview, South Nyack, Central Nyack & Upper Nyack. Now considered the most urban of the Rockland County communities, Nyack boasts a number of social events, such as the annual Art Walk and the weekly Tuesday Mostly Music sessions. A proud member of the “Rivertowns of Rockland,” Nyack sits on the western shore of the Hudson River and is considered an inner suburb of NYC. The long wait is over. There is a new principal at the Nyack Middle school. Thre will be a meet and greet  in the school cafeteria on June 28. School trustees hired Brentnall at their meeting Tuesday night. He will take over July 1, replacing Nicole Saieva, who will become Nyack High School’s new principal. Good luck to Nicole in her new position. Brentnall has served as principal of the East Brook Middle School in Paramus, N.J., since 2008. He was selected from a pool of 131 candidates, of which 31 were interviewed. Brentnall was named teacher of the year while working in Montvale schools. We welcome him to the Nyack community, and wish him well in his new position

Crowds of people took to the streets of the Village of Nyack for a relaxing stroll to viewcourse in art  during this weekend’s seventh annual Art Walk event. Beginning in 2006 the Village of Nyack, began inviting professional and emerging artists to put their work on display in shops along Main Street and Broadway. Visitors get to see art for free, and meet and chat with artist.By all accounts the art stroll was a big success for stores and artists alike.

Nyack’s decrepit marina is finally undergoing reconstruction. New bulkheads, walkways and docks are being replaced; construction is expected to be complete before the end of Spring this year. The village is also considering hiring a private marina operator, and is researching flood insurance options.  Good news indeed for those that live close by in the Claremont condominiums and patrons of the Riverclub Restaurant who overlook this rundown eyesore.

You can see the top four homeimprovements below that give you the best return for your dollar.  Even though kitchen remodeling came in fourth place, my experience has been that what truly sells a home these days, is a warm and inviting and –most importantly an open kitchen. I have experienced the draw of the kitchen, both with my friends, when we all stand around our kitchen island, and I recently saw it when my teenage daughter had a party. I came downstairs to find 15-20 kids all crowded into our kitchen area happily chatting away. Besides, how much more fun is a great kitchen than a new front door. As my younger daughter says – really mom? #1: Tough-as-Nails Siding Replacement   National average cost, replace 1,250 sq. ft. of existing siding with fiber-cement siding, including all ...

A two-story Georgian Revival Style house, with a living room, hall, kitchen, two bedrooms, bath, and furnished attic can be yours for the holidays. But you can’t buy it or move into it. Unless you are very lucky or very, very small. The Historical Society of the Nyacks is raffling a hand-crafted dollhouse with furnishings, made by the late noted artist and miniaturist Helen Norman of Sneden’s Landing. Proceeds of the raffle will benefit the work of the Historical Society, whose aim is to promote interest in local history. The dollhouse is on display next to the circulation desk at the Nyack Library and tickets may be purchased there. The drawing will be at the Library at 4p on December 22. The Historical Society of the Nyacks collects and exhibits artifacts related to Nyack history, pub...

If you have been wondering what’s happened to the Dapper Dog building in Nyack, you aren’t alone! However, there is no clear answer as to what the new structure at 84 North Highland Ave. is, but the Village of Nyack has issued a stop work order and court appearance ticket to the property owner, alleging the construction violates what was originally agreed to. Walter Sevastian, Nyack's village attorney said in a recent interview with the Nyack Patch  "[The owner] has proceeded to do work in excess of what was approved. The building inspector cited them for it, and they are appealing." The property's owner, submitted the initial building application to the village's Architectural Review Board on Sept. 21, telling told village officials he planned to alter the appearance of his building wi...

We have a truly inspired songwriter and singer in our midst. "John Whoever," as he calls himself -- though all Piermonters will recognize him. Watch this exquisite short song he performed only last night in Nyack. It's called Far From You. Here are the lyrics: Far From You Driving this car through the valleys, the hillsides are shrouded with mist The sun must be high but the afternoon sky shows only a pale yellow disc And lining the interstate shoulders, the deer lie like fallen soldiers Summer has never felt colder--I’m far from you Stopping to rest in a churchyard, straining to read the old stones I push through a door; there’s dust on the floor, but I’m not completely alone I think I might hear a bell ringing, and spirits around me are singing The words of a hymn, but I’m thinking, I...

Finally after years of waiting Baumgarts has opened it's Nyack location. I have been going to the Englewood resturant for over 20 years so this is particuarly good news for me. I have probably sampled every dish on the menu in the  Englewood location.  I went there with my family and some friends last Saturday night. The renovation is beautiful -the interior is spacious and modern with both inside and outside seating. We ordered dumplings, chicken with pine nuts and lettuce wraps, sesame chicken and the duck. Although they are still working out some opening kinks overall service was good and the food excellent. After we finished dinner, we went to the old fashioned ice cream counter at the front of the resturant. The homemade ice cream and the egg creams were delicious and calorie worth...

After the legalization of same sex marriage in New York the village board of Nyack has decided to name John Shields, former mayor of Nyack our first  marriage officer. Shields filed a lawsuit against the Orangetown town clerk and the state asking that marriage licenses be issued to same-sex couples. Shields' term begins July 24, when the state's Marriage Equality Act takes effect.  The position of marriage officer is without salary,  and will last for one year.

It seems Mayor Richard Kavesh had a change of heart, as he decided to give up his right to use the Nyack First party name. Trustee Jen Laird-White, who is challenging Kavesh for mayor, and Trustee Doug Foster created the Nyack First Party in 2009. The name must be registered and reserved annually, which Kavesh did before Laird-White and Foster could. Foster said Kavesh was within his legal rights but accused him of dirty politics. Kavesh said he had no intention of using the name. Mayor Kavesh will use the Preserve Nyack line.
